John Hermann, a.k.a. The King of the Alps, has ridden every motorcycle-worthy pass in the Alps, and is positively addicted to the practice. I will boast that I have been riding the Alps longer than he has, since I began in 1957 on my NSU 250, when the 6,800-foot Monte Giovo Pass (Jaufenpass in German) was still dirt. And I have been back many, many times, but Hermann has dedicated himself to riding every road and has been over passes that are still on my to-do agenda. On his pass-bagging list he has over 300 passes, and maybe I've been on 200 of them. This Alpine chain of mountains curves for some 700 miles from the French Riveria through Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Italy all the way over to Slovenia on the Adriatic Sea, and Hermann covers 75 different routes in these mountains, which are grouped into 20 sections. A section would be a part of the Alps where you might want to stay a few days. Each route is well-described, and if there is a Gasthaus on top of the pass where you can get a cup of hot cocoa, that is detailed. Some passes have a day of the week on which motorcyclists congregate, and he tells you that. In each section he mentions hotels he has enjoyed. If you're an American, and use this book as a reference.....surprise..I don't know how old the info is, but Europe is not as decribed here.99â„… can be paid by credit card.Finding an up to date paper map is lot looking for teeth in a hen.Hotels are on line. We book rooms while drinking coffee og sitting on the toilet. The European middle class is affluent and this is reflected in the prices.We drink tap water and have shower curtains...etc. Drink and drive is a no go.Big breakfasts are rare.Always check if your hotel takes credit cards. Some only take cash, and give no receipts. Mastercard is American.....not always popular. Visa is accepted more often. American Express can be used for scraping ice off the windscreen.Many of the listed routes are jam packed with traffic. The traffic has increased enormously the last few years.Don't discuss US politics....Traffic violations are fined beyond belief. A minor speeding ticket can easily be more 500 USD.Have a great trip !

Bought this after a receiving a recommendation from a fellow rider on ADVRider.com. This book is literally jam packed full of the best roads in the Alps and the author does a fantastic job of breaking things down into manageable chunks and rides. Really solid travel companion!

These books are amazingly detailed and full of information. I am just jealous because the multi-talented author has had the opportunity to ride so many roads and visit so many towns and villages throughout the Alps. Highly recommend it.

For all of the buzz about this book and the "King of the Alps" claim, this book is disappointing on many levels.I have no idea about what's available in the UK. I'm not aware of any other US produced Alps guides, making this book the only one easily found in the US. Despite the comments that follow, the book is about the only choice for planing a trip in any part of the Alps. ("The Alps" is a huge area from the Spanish/French border and into Slovenia - it's not "only" France, Switzerland, and Austria/Northern Italy)Place names... I'll work with the German speaking parts of Switzerland, Austria, and the Italian South Tirol. The Southern Tirol is in Italy but 60% of the population speaks German. Place names exist in German and Italian. This complicated for many people. For example, Jaufenpass in German is Passo di Monte Giovo in Italian. Some passes, like Jaufenpass are usually known by their German name while others, such as Passo dello Stelvio, are known by their Italian name. The same thing happens with place names. Reschensee in German is Lago di Resia in Italian. Hermann uses the Italian names and sometimes mentions the German names. Some maps use both, some use one or the other. This leaves the reader to sort out which place is which, depending on the language used.While the book lists a huge list of passes, the number of passes described in any measure is far less. And those descriptions often lack any real detail. Passo dello Stelvio / Stilfserjoch is a good example of this. There is one road up and over the pass, as usual. The distinction is the east road (coming from Prato Allo Stelvio / Prad am Stilfserjoch) was built originally by the Austrians (when South Tirol was part of Austria). It's still in good repair. However, what really matters is this road has 48 hairpins on the way up. For riders new to hairpins, this is not the place to start learning. The west road, towards Bormio, has fewer hairpins, a few tunnels, and the road usually is under repair or should be (Hermann does mention this). He says something about the "Austrian" road is often closed. Perhaps in early spring or late fall (definitely closed during the winter), but otherwise, rain, sun, fog... it's open. He says there are a couple of hotels on the pas, and lists two; there are four immediately on the pass' saddle and two or three more while coming up from Prato/Prad. He's correct that the top of the pass seems like a circus, with lots of motorcycles, bicycles, cars, campers, and more. But it's part of the fun of climbing "Stelvio". And he misses on one of the institutions: Bruno's wurst stand. Bruno stands under the yellow awning over his grill, turning out great wursts, with all kinds of toppings including Louisiana hot sauce, all while delivering a non-stop monologue in at least four languages. Not every pass is worthy of or needs this sort of detail. But the "big name" passes are often shortchanged, and so is the reader.The maps, accompanying a chapter about a collection of passes, are little more than a rough idea of where the passes are. There's no detail (route numbers, if available) about the roads with passes. Converting the pass locations to GPS-friendly locations is a challenge. And some pass names don't make it to a map, but are mentioned only as "go over passes A, B, and C to get to Some Big Pass". Finding international borders is another challenge - they're small and faint. Crossing from Austria to Italy or Germany is almost unnoticed. In some places crossing into Switzerland is, too, but in some places, it's very much "passport please". It's worth knowing which border is being crossed.His descriptions favor biker (that is, rider) hotels, bike cafes, and biker meeting points. That's fine for people who want to join a mob of riders, but some people want to settle down somewhere for a little less chaos and maybe talk with only a couple of riders. Those places get far less mention.In general, hotels tend towards the expensive. They offer spas, massages, a pool, workout rooms, and more, on top of the restaurant / dining room. If all that's needed is a place to get cleaned up and get some rest, there are far less expensive, but still quite good, alternatives. Those details are limited. There is some other "how the local folks do it" material that is... well, maybe that's how it looks to a foreigner, but it's not correct. And then there's the language issue.I don't speak Italian, or French, but I do speak German. Hermann simply has, in very specific ways, little respect for the language. German contains four letters not used in English. These letters, "a", "o", and "u" (I hope Amazon gets this right - ä ö ü) all have two dots over them, the "umlaut". They are as important as "a", "o", and "u" are in English. But Hermann dismisses them as somehow quaint and not needed. That is simply not true. For anyone who can't write or type the letters, the accepted form is to add an "e" after the umlauted letter to make "ae", "oe", and "ue". However he spells Flüelapass (or Flueelapass) as Fuelapass. Most search engines will quickly tell anyone using them that "Fluelapass" is misspelled. (The four letter looks like this:ß or like an unusual "B". It represents two S' together. The most common example is to see it used for the S' in "strasse" - street. This letter is used less and less, and can be safely ignored. But if it shows up somewhere, it's useful to know about it.)The final point is about the index. It's confusing. Going back to Passo dello Stelvio/Stilfserjoch, the index lists it (as Stelvio pass) on pages 164-166, 169, 171, 175, 178. Pages 164-166 have the written description, but photos continue to 167. Page 169 has the map including Stelvio. If pages 171, 175, 178 have the word Stelvio on them, I can't find it. Stilfserjoch gets one entry, 164, even though 164-167 are about the same place.The book is usable, but I don't recommend regarding it as the final word on the Alps. Use touring and adventure web sites to find people who've been there. Consider looking for British guides, often available on the web in the usual selling sites. As the countries' tourist information offices for information - as always, web search engines are very helpful. For those who speak even a little German and know about on-line language translators, there's an excellent series of German guides available on Amazon. Follow my reviews for more information about them. However, in the end, Motorcycle Journeys Through the Alps is flawed, but better than nothing...

I do like this book but two of these lessons were in other Walter Foster books I already had. Spring is just around the corner and has me thinking of flowers so I'm looking forward to trying out the lessons in this book

I especially enjoyed the detailed lessons by the 5 artists. My favorite section was by Jim Sulkowski. Good instruction.

For a student with low reading level they now don't have to skip higher math! My dyslexic daughter gets math but her low reading level stood in the way of being successful with most math programs. This is the most clear and simple presentation of Algebra I have ever seen and I have been a teacher for 18 years! It presents and organizes the vocabulary at the beginning of every chapter. It doesn't just give you the steps to perform but helps you understand why those steps solve the problem. She started Algebra in the Abecka book and was doing good although it took a long time to get through. When we switched over I had her review the chapters she had already done. She had done well (every grade over 85 and some 100s) But she redid the chapters because the vocabulary was so much clearer and her comment was with the old program she knew what to do but now she understands why to do it and because she understands she is not skipping any steps anymore. She is now making all A s and is moving through the book at twice the speed. It is so good to see her confidence grow because she gets it. We bought all pacemaker subjects for next year It has been hard watching her fall further behind in other areas due to her reading but now she can be successful even though her dyslexia seriously limits her reading level.

It looks like a thorough review of basic Algebra 1 skills. However, I do not like how there is NO key. That is why I must mark down.

Been using this textbook for years with my students. Great step by step guides on how to solve the equations. Could use more practice problems, but you can just look for what you are needing specifically on line.

Just like their Basic Math and Pre- Algebra texts, this book builds on prior learning one concept at a time. The series is so well presented a student could probably use it to learn with little or no teacher support.

This book balances precisely between two extremes: It can be viewed through the lens of science fiction just as easily as realistic fiction, but it is only through the perfect blend Crouch has concocted between the two that we get such a well rendered dissection of the human mind."Are you happy with your life?" There's your tag line, the pitch to the reader. Can any of us truly say we've lived life without any regrets? If you can then perhaps this book is not for you, but if you're like any normal person who spends day to day dealing with the consequences of life's little choices then Dark Matter's concept should speak to you. Opening with a seemingly random kidnapping Dark Matter quickly spirals down a path that bends the line between choice and consequence just as easily as reality.Where this book truly shines is Crouch's masterful manipulation of science. Forced into a reality unlike anything he has experienced we follow Jason Dessen's impossible journey through worlds and self discovery. Literally. But you don't need to be a physics major to understand the balance here. There are concepts discussed that are probably foreign to those with even the most illustrious bachelors degrees and yet they are discussed and molded in such a way that even while fully present they fail to distract or discombobulate. They instead exist as a physical representation of minds most illusive concept: choice.Dark Matter is such a hard book to critique, not because there are problems with it and not because it is perfect without flaw, more because it's so tightly wound together that discussing a single portion is enough to spoil it. This is a book where critiquing the characters or the setting or even the ending will get you no where because it's not about any of that. It's about the journey. It's about the path not taken, it's about self. Self understanding, self loathing, self regret, selfishness, and finally self acceptance.But just as I spend this time talking about the cerebral portion of the book I will do it an injustice if I fail to mention the physicality of it. It's a subtlety cerebral book. More overt is the fast paced dash Jason makes as he tries to make it back to everything he's lost. It's nonstop movement with twists and turns that while unpredictable are wholly right. A reader can choose to focus on this portion just as easily as they can relate to the thought behind it. It's the reader's mindset that determines which point is more important. A person who is not interested in science fiction can easily find a foothold in the realism expressed, while a nerd can choose to follow the physical manifestation of the Schrodinger cat paradox through to its conclusion. Are you more interested in Jason's physical or cerebral journey? Are you here for both? It's hard to say.How do you critique life? You don't. You make choices and you make the best of them. Reading Dark Matter is a choice. For me it was good one, wholly unexpected but rather refreshing and filling. Reading it is a choice I hope a lot of people will make in the future, but what you get out of it is entirely up to you, based on your life and your choices.

So, I'll start with the good - the writing was well done and well-paced, though I thought there were some choices that could have been done to facilitate more clear or easier reading (especially given the topic), but overall, I found Mr. Crouch's writing to be clear and easy to consume quickly. My biggest problem is that the resolution to the issues felt rushed - I felt as though there was a clear and interesting problem and it was solved in the least interesting, most blunt way possible. (Not to mention that, within the sometimes flimsy rules of the book, the outcome creates *infinitely* more problems than it solves.)I really wanted to like the book and I'm interested in where this author goes from here - I just didn't feel as though he had given himself enough scope to properly play out the problem and all the permutations of the primary issue. Final opinion: coulda been great, feels like the author settled for okay.

There is a point in the story where the author speaks about something that seems almost real but is unmistakably not. It gives off a vibe that repels and disgusts. For me, this story is one such example.It is well written. It tells a complete story. It contains hard SF that is presented in a reasonably sound manner. The author is clearly an accomplished and skilled writer. And this story screams false. I apologize, the rest of this review may sound arrogant, but there is no other viewpoint from which to express my misgivings except as a reader who has already thought about quantum alternative universes and can relate to someone who might be smart enough to come up with the physics to reach them.Unfortunately, the protagonist is a physicist, who in one version of his life creates a device to transport people into alternative realities. In another, he choses family over career and ends up a middling physics professor. This other life lived is upended one night when he is kidnapped and sent through the device his other version of himself invented. Unfortunately, the family man version of himself never thinks. He doesn't react with any intelligent thought when he is kidnapped. He never starts thinking. The protagonist should perhaps have been an investor instead of a brilliant physicist. That might have read as truer to life.Most readers and most movie goers are not exceptionally smart, so perhaps this excruciating flaw may not detract from the novel for them. It may not detract from the novel for you. But hard SF is written first and foremost for smart people to evaluate how new advances might play out. If you are one of those people, you may find yourself thinking with irritation early on that the protagonist isn't behaving intelligently. It never gets any better. He never thinks like a physicist.However, the story is sound. The writing is good. The story is thought provoking. Perhaps you will find the story engaging. There is a lot to like. But there is this streak of wrongness that you might find revolting. Try a sample. If you aren't put off by what you can read up front, perhaps you won't have any problem with any of it. If you do, beware, it won't get any better.I chose to give the book three stars because it is word-crafted with skill. I might have given it an even lower rating because of the false behavior of the protagonist. However, not everyone will read this story and get the same vibe. And if the physicist's behavior doesn't strike you as false, you may really enjoy this story.

This is the best educational book I've read in a while. The ideas are relevant and students respond positively! I just started a new position teaching HS math (I started the week after spring break - so the craziest time of the year). I have been implementing some of the ideas and the kids are doing wonderful. Collaboration ideas, helpful hints. It's way more than 50 ideas. In addition she has included links to resources throughout the entire book. I strongly encourage for any teacher - most ideas can be easily translated to other content areas and at any grad level. The number of secondary relevant ideas was surprising. She provided examples and resources from kindergarten through calculus.

Good information if you are new to Google classroom.

Love this book. I read it in one sitting and cannot wait to implement the ideas with my students.

The format of the Kindle book is very poor and hard to read. I purchased the Kindle Book for and additional $2.99 after I purchased the printed book. I really hope the book itself is easy to read and follow. I will update my ratings after I receive the print book.

Amazon needs to realize that none of the regular book questions works when dealing with a coloring book. But this is fun. I could have done with a few less mantra like pages and more images.

Attached to this review will be a silent flip-through of the entire coloring book so you can make an informed decision as to whether or not it will work for you.Rather than discuss how this is like or different from the various movies other than to note that images have been used from all six episodes thus far, I will discuss only how I feel about it as an adult coloring book.The book is filled with portrait studies of various character and a lot of kaleidoscope style mandalas. The mandalas generally have a single repeating element from movies (robots, ships, weapons, etc.) What I found missing and would have liked would have been some stand-alone studies of the Death Star and the Millennium Falcon and other ships and vehicles. While I missed those, it doesn't detract from the overall large selection of Star Wars designs to choose from. My favorite characters were all well represented and as I enjoy coloring mandalas, I will have a lot of fun with those, too. The designs range from simple and open (especially many of the mandalas) to complex with intricate design elements (character portraits, especially.) This presents a nice range for me to color depending on the mood I am in that day.The book has a nice heavyweight cardboard cover (front and back) which makes for a great solid surface to color on. The designs are printed on both sides of the page and the paper is not perforated. The binding is sewn rather than glued, so removing it takes only a few snips with a small scissor on a few pages.There are only four designs which span across two pages. The rest of the designs are all single page with lots of room around the edges so that nothing is lost in the binding. The four two page designs are wallpaper style of repeating patterns and each is dedicated to a single subject: Yoda, R2-D2, C-3PO, Boba Fett, and finally, various ships in the midst of a battle. I think these are really cool designs though they don't line up very well in my particular book. When there are too many of these two-page designs with too much loss of image, I detract a point from my rating. That is not the case with this book – there are so few that it is really insignificant.All of my markers bleed-through on this paper thought my Staedler triplus fineliners fared the best with more of a shadow image on the back of the page. I could still identify the color, so it merely bled less than the others. My gel pens worked fine and my coloring pencils worked fantastic – very smooth and creamy on this paper.

I love the variety of beautiful images in this book. The book is very large in comparison to similar books. It has a very thick cardboard-like cover. There seems to be an equal balance of male to female characters to color. All of the characters are from Episode 1 through 6. Overall, the paper seems to be of good quality, but the images are doublesided. I use my water based markers without the color bleeding through. Since images are doublesided, some types of markers cannot be used to color without bleeding through. I have yet to use colored pencils because I have been enjoying using my gel pens and markers to color.

I've been getting into adult coloring books lately. I have gone through several as far as looking at them. From mandalas, to flower patterns, owl patterns, and paisley patterns. Many of those books just make me dizzy looking at all the lines that they have put in the book. I have finally come to realize I am a big Disney fan. Actually, I've known that I've been a big Disney fan since forever. Catherines Saunier-Talec and she is becoming my favorite author for these adult coloring books. I purchased her princess Disney book and loved it. I'm waiting for her villains book, and her animals book. She puts just the right amount of detail in each of her books. She does not overpower the pages with a zillion lines. I decided to go ahead and purchase the Star Wars book. My son has been wanting to color with me. He's been asking me over and over again. I saw that she made a Star Wars book and had to get it for him. He and I have been working on the pages. The pages are perfect. Again, she has put the perfect patterns and the perfect images throughout the entire book. The quality of the pages are extremely durable. My gel pens do not leak through. My watercolor pencils do not leak through. Each page is double sided. You get a hundred pages in each book. I am in love with these coloring books. I will continue to purchase these Disney coloring books and enjoy the time I have with them.

It is Star Wars, I'm sure there is a lightsaber duel somewhere in there. Is that violence or action? Storm Troopers shooting and not hitting their targets... is that attempted violence?Asking me "Is there sexual content?" ... I guess that depends on how you color it. You could make Jedi robes transparent. Just depends on your motivation and imagination... are Yoda's nips dark green or maybe dark brown?"How is the story narrated?" ... "With the voice in my head" isn't one of the options to choose.

First of all the quality of the materials used to make this book are unquestionably great, with a nice hard cover and very thick pages. The actual images on those pages are a mix of decent Star Wars themed mandalas and abstracts mixed with a lot of characters surrounded by flowers... yes flowers. Pretty much every picture is.... Darth Vader, adorned with tropical flowers.... Yoda springing into action, with a background of garden flowers... Han Solo, behind intricate lattice with flowers. I guess that's what makes this an "adult" coloring book? I'd have preferred fewer flowers myself, but I'll still enjoy this book.

Seriously, if you are the kind of person who needs to understand where things came from to really understand them, this is a great book. It is truly a book on code, and not just "how to code" or "what to do with code" but "what on earth is code" and where did it come from. It explains computers and computing in more usable terms than more technical books on the same subject because it focuses on history and scope rather than technical depth. For a reader like me, who asked every teacher from elementary school through college "why do we count to 10" and clung to the best answer of "it's arbitrary - it's just how it's always been done" until reading this book (and who struggled to convert binary to base ten), this book was gold. Pure gold.

I'm an electronics engineer so basically I was not expecting to find much new stuff of this book when I first browsed the table of contents, however after some reading I've got to love it very quickly. Yeah, chances are that most of the devices described along the pages are familiar to many people, specially for those with education in engineering, but the way this book takes you from one to the next is as natural that new relationships start to be apparent right away and then, you finally got it !!. This book is a very nice mix of technical and historical, it will use your interest in electronics to tell you the whole story from the Morse code to the microprocessor. As I read I learned more about the many difficulties that our peers from the past had to deal with to solve their problems and, ultimately, create the technology of today.

Okay, so I'm only 30 pages into this book but I'm hooked. I started taking evening IT classes to get into a different career and ran into some issues in my A+ certification went they kept using volts, amperes and other terms that I only had a vague idea of what they meant. This book gave me a more solid understanding of these terms, so much so I saved a friend $85 dollars that he was about spent on a starter for his car. I saw immediately that the cable wire attached to the battery was missing a few inches of electrical tape, leaving the copper exposed. This book taught me that electricity does not ran very well through air, so we went to Auto Zone and bought some electrical tape to cover the exposed areas, making sure enough electricity is getting to the battery. I didn't think it was going to work but the car started right up! For a noob like me this was a big deal. This author created a strong interest in me for chemistry, which would of been real helpful years ago but oh well. I enjoyed his intro into Morse code and Brail as it felt he was conditioning readers to grasp idea how computers received and process information. Brail was very interesting as he pointed out how certain markers will alert a blind person to cease interpreting letters and switch over to numbers, than another nullifier to switch back to letters.

This walked me through computers from concept to how the circuits work to how the different components work together. Very helpful for me, an adult who didn't grow up with computers, to understand how they actually work. Interesting for those who want to know the nitty-gritty details of circuits and computers and why they work.

This is a good book. I am teaching a class and using this as the text. It's at a pretty good intro level and many of the students seem to like it a lot. I liked it because it's more of a novel than an actual text, it gives a good background to many of the topics I'm teaching, and I can go in depth into other topics and ideas that are related to the concepts described in the book. I don't cover the whole book and some of the chapters are harder to understand than others, but I do like the book overall.

Was looking for a book that could explain how a computer really works from scratch but never found one until I found this book thinking it’s just another typical computer book. This book is perfect explaining how computer works starting from hardware to software only for the beginner or someone who wants to know how exactly a computer works and the theory behind it. Wish I had read this book when it was published (year 2000).

Understanding what's going on at the core of your code can never hurt, and this is the most interesting way you could ever learn about it. Chapter by chapter, it subtly builds on concepts taught to you in previous chapters.The book arranges a surprise for you somewhere in each chapter, wherein you realize what you've been learning about is a concrete topic of study. For example: the book teaches you how current passes through a switch and to a light bulb with a simple drawing, then it incrementally builds the diagrams to be more complex, until at some point it's revealed that you know how circuits work, and that you're now fairly familiar with circuit diagrams. From end to end, you begin at Morse code and eventually land on CPU schematics.
