In the world of Perl there was once only the 'camel book,' held in perhaps as much reverence as 'K & R' among C programmers. It certainly appealed to roughly the same audience, those who wanted a short, sharp introduction to a programming language. It was with a problem that needed solving and a copy of the camel book that I started as a Perl programmer.Then for those that wanted a introduction to Perl and programming Randal L. Schwartz wrote Learning Perl, a book that has arguably become the definitive textbook for teaching Perl. The one weakness was that it left off before really getting to the guts of building large, complex projects in Perl. It did not cover classes, objects, breaking your code up into pieces or the more arcane aspects of variables, references. For this we had to resort to the last few chapters of the 'camel book' and I, for one, have never really been totally comfortable at this end of the language; when I'm reading someone else's code it might take a couple of reads to fully understand the process.Now this weakness has been well and truly addressed. Schwartz, with Tom Phoenix, has written "Learning Perl Objects, References & Modules", a volume that takes the same steady approach to teaching you the more advanced topics as the earlier 'Learning Perl'. Schwartz has spent the years since writing 'Learning Perl' teaching and writing. You can tell, this is a superbly written book, not that 'Learning Perl' wasn't well written; it's just that this volume is far better.The GutsThe book starts with a chapter on building larger programs that covers @INC, eval, do and require before discussing packages and scope. It then has several chapters on references that explains in well understandable fashion and increasing complexity all the ins and outs of references including dereferencing, nested references, references to subroutines and references to anonymous data before a final chapter on references that gives you some incredibly useful tricks such as sorting and recursively defining complex data.The book continues with three chapters that give you a solid grounding in Perl objects. Here Schwartz has assumed that you know at least a little about object oriented programming, some may feel the need for more explanation of concepts might be required, but if you've had any experience in OOP before then the clear examples and descriptions here are probably all you want.Modules are not as well covered, with only a single chapter, but it is hard to think of anything left out, it covers using them and building your own so well that it left me wondering what all the fuss was about, "seems obvious to me." The book concludes with chapters on building a distribution out of your module, testing it using make test (with Test::Harness), Test::Simple and Test::More before a chapter telling you how to contribute to CPAN.Each chapter of the book concludes with a number of small exercises, designed to be done in just a few minutes, that cement the learning of the previous chapter. The answers to these are at the end of the book.ConclusionOnce I'd finished I felt I had a much more solid grounding in Perl, certainly I was much better able to understand another programmer's code that dealt with such things as subroutine references and some complex data structures. While the subject matter of this book is almost entirely covered in 'Programming Perl' the tutorial aspects of this book made it much easier going. The style would be familiar to anyone who has read 'Learning Perl', light without being frivolous and extremely well written, Schwartz seems a master at reducing complexity to manageable bites.This book is deceptively easy to follow, each new idea built onto earlier ones, each new language concept introduced in an easy manner. The writing is excellent, it's hard to explain why I appreciated it so much. That may be the reason, the writing isn't forced or heavy or too light or obvious. It just allows the solid material of the book to shine through. Go to the ubiquitous O'Reilly website and grab the example chapter (the site also has a few Errata, the Table of Contents and the code from the book) and give it a look.I think this may well become a classic, I may well in ten years time talk of Schwartz's books with the same awe I now talk of Brian Kernighan's. I'll certainly eagerly await his next book and keep this one close until it comes. Oh, and Randal, how about 'Software Tools for Perl Programmers'?

"Learning Perl Objects, References and Modules " is the sequel to "Learning Perl". It starts of where "Learning Perl" finished. In "Learning Perl" I learned how to write Perl programs. In "Learning Perl Objects" I learned how to write better and bigger Perl programs. The audience of this book is the advanced Perl Programmer that wants to improve his Perl knowledge in the area of OO programming.If you want to use Perl's OO functions, you have to know a lot about references and modules / packages (an OO package is just a normal package that is called in OO fashion). The first couple of chapters (chapter 1-7) talk about these basics of Perl OO programming that can (and should) be used even without using OO. I love chapter 5 about complex data structures. The chapters 8-11 describe the Perl OO implementation. Further Meta information about how to program packages, CPAN and testing is provided in the chapters 12-15.The setup of the book is didactically very good and the nicely "incremental". You can see that the authors developed this book out of courses that they have held and improved for a long time. Because the book provides a nice stepwise introduction into the subject, one should read it from beginning to end. To really practice the newly learned skills, Tom and Randal provide some example exercises (with solutions in the appendix) at the end of every chapter.Although I am not a native English speaker, I found the book very readable and humorous. Again this is another O'Reilly book that presents a possibly dry subject in a very accessible way. Even though the explanations are very good, be prepared to read some chapters twice (or more) to get your "aha" moment.Coming from a C++ background I still find it strange that Perl needs so little additional syntax for OO programming. This has of course some (little) disadvantages. Some things like calling abstract methods and class methods (or rather errors calling these methods) are not enforced at compile time but can be enforced at runtime (if you want). Tom and Randal explain this in their book of course (and hopefully I will not forget to implement this in my modules).There is one great downside of this book: I would have loved it to be longer. This book has about 180 effective pages (plus appendix, index, foreword), which makes it a rather fast read compared to some of the "normal" IT brick stones."Learning Perl Objects" is an extraordinary good introductory book into advanced Perl programming with references, modules and objects. If you have liked "Learning Perl" and you want to proceed on your path to Perl mastery, you will love this book.

This book provides exactly what it promises: a clear, concise, and complete explanation of how one uses objects, references, and modules in the Perl programming language. The didactic style does an excellent job of explaining concepts in straightforward terms, and maintains a light, conversational tone so that the reader doesn't fall asleep. For those who have a genuine interest in programming, and who enjoy learning new things, PORM encourages this and plays to it, to good effect. As a second Perl book after Learning Perl, I recommend it without hesitation.Now for the bad news: this is an old book. The later editions have been renamed "Intermediate Perl", and more directly follow on the heels of Learning Perl. At the time of this writing, I have not read Intermediate Perl and cannot comment on its quality as an update of PORM, but based on a solid foundation like this it would be difficult to go far wrong.

About the Author

Michael R. Napier is a former FBI (27 years) Supervisory Special Agent, field office program manager and violent crime assessor in the National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime, where he investigated complex bribery, price-fixing, organized crime, violent crime, labor racketeering, Medicare and medical fraud, and white collar crime cases. He also supervised undercover operations. He is an FBI-qualified Polygraph Examiner and has extensively studied interview and interrogation strategies and tactics and the methodology to deny successful challenges to confessions. He specializes in applying behavioral analysis to violent crimes to assess the potential for preventing violence or deterring specific criminals in individual settings. Those techniques include determining foresee-ability of an individual committing a violent act. He is a nationally-recognized presenter on various topics concerning violent crime assessment, violent offender motivation, interview and interrogation strategies and crisis management subjects. Huge, helpful information in this book. I was surprised and delighted by the easy to follow information it provided. Each Node has about 50 pages worth of info. Helpful to read yours first, then, with permission, explore your friends and family's in order to understand and have compassion of who they are and where they are coming from. Humbling, empowering.

Amazing book. Spot on! You can learn a lot about yourself with this book. It’s a great book which will help to increase your self awareness. It picked up on things that I wasn’t aware of and told me WHY I do the things I do, which was really interesting! It does discuss past lives and how our past life/lives are affecting us today both for the good and the bad. There is no other book around like this. It’s definiey worth the money.

Ok, I am a fanatic about Thailand and this was a must have for some of the recipes included in the book. I did do the Tom Kha Gai recipe and it was just like what I am used to eating there. Gordon Ramsey has you using part coconut milk, part coconut cream to make it a little thicker than just using coconut milk. There is only a little left in the can of cream based his his recipe, so I just added the whole can.The recipes are easy to follow and if you are looking for something different to try an cook and enjoy, I really recommend this book. I have the Kindle edition and there are some quirks with it, but overall I really like this book. Check out the videos regarding this series of recipes on YouTube as well. Very entertaining. :)

I own most of G. Ramsay’s cook books but I was a bit disappointed in this one. A lot of dishes I am not familiar with and would have thought it more helpful to have more photographs of the dishes than pictures of Asia and his travels. It reads more like a travel book than a cook book and does not inspire me to cook those dishes.

Having eaten at Gordon Ramsey's restaurant in Chelsea, London, I know what a creative chef he is. This book reflects his genius.

The s might be the best Gordon yet. I enjoyed the episodes then got the cookbooks to match. The different ways of making the same things all over each country was incredibly beautiful.

easy to understand and follow

this book. I'm excited to try some of the dishes. Chef Ramsay has an easy style of writing that makes it fun to read his stories as well as his recipes.

I love Gordon and he did pick some really delightful recipes for this book. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that he didn't give pictures as many pictures for the recipes as I would have liked. The book is not so large that they couldn't have had a picture for every recipe.

The book is great, the dvd is even better, if you get one you have to have the other.More please.

What a fantastic ride! This is the 2nd book in the Beauty in Flight series. While this one would probably make sense as a stand-alone, you really should read the first book in order to get the history before reading this one. This book starts where the first one left off. Harper has taken Red and fled for their lives. She ends up in Nutfield, NH (fans of the author's Hidden Truths series will find that town to be familiar - and some familiar faces show up as well!) in order to go into hiding and stay off the grid. Jack Rossi is a newcomer to Nutfield, making his way renting properties in the quaint vacation town. When he gets a request on the house he listed 3 days ago in off-season, he jumps at it after a quick credit check. Little does he know that his new tenants will change his whole world. And to add to the mix, Red's grandson Derrick has become more desperate. This book was filled with action and suspense with just the right touch of romance. I would highly recommend this series for fans of inspirational romantic suspense! I can't wait to see what happens next!Special thanks to the author for an advance copy of this e-book. When he meets Harper and Red he’s drawn to both of them but as he gets to know them things just don’t add up. What is really going on in the house next door?Derrick is searching for Red and his own life depends on finding him. He needs his money and he won’t give up. Where would Harper have taken Him?Hold onto your hat as Robin takes you for a suspenseful ride in the second book in the Beauty in Flight series.

This was a great second book in the Beauty trilogy. I once again was drawn back into Harper's story as she is doing what she thinks is best and keeping her charge, Red, safe. I love how she shows that she has turned from her past, yet she continues to have difficulty trusting men. Jack was a man of integrity that looks out for his new tenants. I loved seeing his compassion for Harper and Red. Harper is on the run from her ex, who happens to be Red's grandson. Seeing what is going on in his life just added to the suspense of the story. Once again, the story ends on a cliffhanger, but it left me with a sense of "things are going to be okay." Overall this was a great book that delves into learning to trust and letting others in.I received a copy of this book. This is my honest and voluntary review.

A fantastic series. This is a mystery. Harper has taken her charge Red, and is hiding in a place that no one knows her. Shes afraid of being blamed for something she didn't do. There landlord takes a liking to Red and Harper. Will she open up to him and let him no whats going on. The Author has brought these characters to life. And tells a Fantastic story through this series. If you loved the Storyline in convient lies and that series you will definitely love these. I definitely recommend this series.Shauna Joesten

Another winner. This book is full of suspense, action, romance humor and drama. Well that pretty much describes this story. Heartwarming characters with a few that are not so nice. One you start you cannot put it down so just beware all of your other activities will come to a halt. Robin has the talent to spin a tail with great relatable characters in a way that sucks you into the story and doesn't let you out. Do yourself a favor and read it, you will thank me !

. . . Satisfying. Yes, this last book in the "Beauty" series is all of these as well as the perfect culmination of this wonderful series. The ending is intense but you need to read it yourself to find out what happens. I won't tell. Superb writing, extremely well written characters, fantastic story line, this story will make you want to read it over and over again. Once again, Robin, a great read.

I had preordered both book 2 and 3 and was so disappointed that Book 2--Beauty in Hiding ended with a "cliffhanger" and didn't know how l was going to be able to wait for the next one--then Book 3--Beauty in Battle showed up (the same day) in my Kindle. It did not disappoint. I loved all three books.

A decent overview of world religions, but definitely skewed towards western (Christian/Jewish) religions and traditions. The very obvious overlook of Native American religions and little coverage of non-western religions were significant drawbacks. I was expecting a relatively equal, solid overview of the major existing religions, and this book did not deliver. I did however like the overview of what religion is and the map of where specific religions are primarily practiced.As an aside, which is clearly not relevant to what the author intended, a brief introduction to historic religions (Aztec, Egyptian, Greek, Nortic, etc) would have been ideal.

Bought it to piss off my super Christian mother in law. It worked.

This is such a great book for adults to share with their curious children. We are not church-goers, nor super religious. However, we are very spiritual and always try to do things with love and respect for all people, races, and religions. I strongly feel this is an enlightening book to try to help kids understand family and friends' holidays and gatherings that we may not necessarily follow in exactly the same way.

My son wanted to understand other religions (he's 7) and so we bought this. We are about 1/2 way through it at this point and we really love the illustrations and the explanations of these religions. If I don't watch out, I'll learn something too.

This was one of a couple of similar books purchased recently for my niece, a first-grader who's already reading above grade level and who has a habit of asking questions that leave the adults in the family wondering how to find the answer. She's not asking as many religion questions as she had been, but already corrected one classmate's comment with information I'm sure she got from this book. An added bonus has been that all her grownups have also been learning from this book! It's a little general (to be expected) but does a fairly good job of covering the basics of the world's major religions. Even more important, it does so with no obvious bias.

This is exactly what I was hoping for. It gives enough information to keep the attention without getting into too much detail about each religion. My 9 year old son is enjoying reading it with me.

My 5th-grader is reading this for homeschooling. She is learning the basics of each world religion and just recently, correctly identified the religious leanings of a certain movie character based on her learning from this book. Valuable reference tool.

Nice overview of different religions. Not too in-depth, but the illustrations and graphics make it appealling to younger readers. Covered more religions than Mary Pope Osborne's book, One World, Many Religions, but her book goes into more depth. This is probably the right amount of information for elementary school kids. For people who want more information about how religions are related to one another, or got started, etc., see the Osborne book.

The example is a real one - the FDA hasn't approved a simple set of fats for intravenous baby food, causing severe brain damage in something like dozens of babies per year. And the explanation is a whirlwind tour of how our institutions work and how they break, with many concepts that I've been able to use elsewhere to great benefit.Above all, this book has changed the way I think about learning from experts. I'll end my review with an example of how I analyse things like this now.Recently someone came to me proposing a project for building a math-education website - combining math explanations and machine learning algorithms, connecting you with the best explanation given your background knowledge. And of my first 3 thoughts, 2 were about how the site would function and how a user would interact with it - it's important to concretely visualise a product to figure out if it feels like it would work. However, my 3rd thought was to do an adequacy analysis - I looked for data points about whether I should expect that, if this is a good idea that can work, why hasn't someone already done it? Think about all the money and time people spend on education each year - all the tutors in universities, all the teachers in high schools, all the assistant lecturers and support staff and government subsidies. Surely, if this project was a good idea, someone would've built it and it would be a common website we all use. Is the fact that this doesn't exist already enough evidence that it won't work?In general I don't see the educational marketplace of resources changing rapidly in response to new tech and research. There was a bunch of research about spaced repetition and how memorisation works, that nobody has jumped to incorporate into how universities work. Many people can tell you the best physics/math textbooks (e.g. Feynman Lectures) but most students will never read them. It *doesn't* look to me like a space where it would require a great deal of effort to out-do the best in the field. You might counter by pointing out the success of Khan Academy, but personally I'm not sure I'd consider the fact that a single dad can make lots of videos and do better than everyone else, a sign of success for the educational market.I'm not actually very confident in this analysis. However, the best part is that I can learn about the whole field by working on the one project. If the project fails, or I find out that someone else has tried this and failed, then I'll change my assessment of other projects in this space. On the other hand, if the project succeeds, I will update about how good the educational market is at incentivising people to create useful things like this.I wouldn't have made these models and hypotheses before, and for that reason I'm really glad I read this book.

"Freely mixing debates on the foundations of rational decision-making with tips for everyday life, Yudkowsky explores the central question of when we can (and can’t) expect to spot systemic inefficiencies, and exploit them."The book explores foundational questions of "inside-view" vs "outside-view" reasoning, all the while developing an understanding of how a civilization can achieve obviously-awful outcomes *without* anything special is going on.Analyzing situations via the *equilibria* they involve provides much of the answer, as Yudkowsky examines how to reason about and understand them.

Spends too much time arguing against "modest epistemology", but the insights on when and why our social systems can be systematically broken, with nobody able to fix them, make this book well worth reading and pondering.

Equity markets are efficient in the sense that all stock prices instantly adjust to new information--there are no genuine bills on the ground waiting to be picked up. Thus you can safely ignore someone tells you that INTC is overpriced because of the recent problems with its chips.But largely because of varying incentive structures, not every domain is efficient in this way. Thus it is feasible for a mere decision theorist to correctly diagnose problems with the Bank of Japan's monetary policy, even though the BoJ is run by domain experts.How is this possible? And why do some people insist that it is not possible?It is possible because (a) the BoJ governor cannot personally profit handsomely by making correct monetary policy, and (b) an outsider who lacks object-level expertise can still possess meta-level expertise, allowing him to correctly identify worthy object-level experts whose opinions to trust.Some people insist this is not possible, and that adjusting your beliefs to those of a wider reference class is always preferable. They do this at least in part because of status-related emotions.This book is basically an extended meditation on why EY should not have to quit his contrarian ways just because of Aumann's theorem. That's putting it glibly. It's actually pretty insightful and a quick read.

I loved the part explaining housing bubbles. As a bit of a real estate nerd that was a valued insight. I personally do not experience modest epistemology much myself,but when I do witness it there does not seem to be a universal epistemological adoption by the individual expressing it. I think this is common in the Midwest, where people seem to oscillate wildly from modest epistemology “We can’t possibly understand God’s plan” to arrogant epistemology “I could turn this economy around with a few simple tweaks to the budget”. I’m not sure what demographic the author interacts with that adheres so entirely to modesty, but I haven’t met many of them. As an entrepreneur I appreciated the balanced insight.

The first half of the book is outstanding, in identifying clearly the causes of suboptimal situation in the world we live in. The second half of the book disappoints as the narrative borders on meandering.

The easy to read discussion on a pressing topic that constantly sparks heated debate is refreshing. I learned a lot about myself and the world.

Just arrived in Tunis hoping that this book would get me through my week in Tunisia. For the past 48 hours, it has proven incredibly unhelpful and I just ordered the Lonely Planet guide via download PDF instead because I am desperate. This entire book does not even have a decent map of Tunis, leaving it completely up to me to figure out how to get from place to place. And, yet, it recommends that we walk to sites rather than taking a taxi. Additionally, the book does not make it clear what is the most interesting sites and the moderately interesting sites. After reading the book in an hour, I was not able to decipher which were the 2-3 must see sites. Although the book has pictures and a decent amount of background information, it is not a practical guide and certainly cannot be your only guide in the country. Buy this book if you never plan to travel to Tunisia and, instead, just want to learn about the country. Buy the Lonely Planet guide (or the Tunisia chapter of the Africa book) if you want practical information.

ok, but a bit out of date

Just came back from two weeks in Tunisia. As we had to go to Europe, we decided within a week to go to Tunisia and the only place I could get the book was from Amazon, but we were scare not to have it on time. We went all over Tunisia with OAT Travel. I showed the guide others places which were in the book and from that he detoured when he could do it. Without the book we will had missed a lot. As we travel a lot we have at least 27 books from DK Eyewitness Travel which we went to all those countries. Most of my books I use a marker to spot easier the places to see. We do not have too many places to see in the world, but I will never leave without those books. The Planet Books are very good too for places to eat and sleep.

Great intro to the culture of Tunisia and starting point for further research.

The DK Eyewitness Guide served as a wonderful resource during my recent trip to Tunisia. The photography was beautiful, The historical and cultural explanations were often more complete than that offered by my paid guide. It is easy to use and invaluable to anyone visiting. I'd highly recommend it.

Candy Aisle Crafts by Jodi Levine features ideas and instructions on how to create fun edible treats using items from the candy aisle at the grocery store.Some of these ideas are pretty involved and go about the process in a way that I thought was time consuming. Instead of trying to melt hard candies, you can simply soften taffy and get the same results as she shows in some of the ideas.For other options, I have never even seen some of those types of candies. There is no guide on where to find those candies or how to order them online.Some of the ideas I thought looked like fun, like the cookie planets. That is one I would try out with my kids.My other issue with the book is the binding. I feel that all cooking related books should be spiral bound so the book actually stays open while you're in the kitchen trying to follow the instructions.Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for writing an honest review. I did not receive any other compensation.

This book has lovely photographs and lots of fun ideas. I give it only three stars because I found many of the projects to be more difficult/involved than I had hoped and because I found the book to have a lot of repetition from one idea to the next. I also would have liked more specific "source" information. For instance, in the description of the project that makes bowls out of starlight peppermint candies, the author explains that some brands of mints work better than others, but she doesn't say in what way or which brand she uses. I found that frustrating.I bought this as a gift for a creative, crafty family member, and she seemed interested in flipping through it. But all in all, I wouldn't buy it again and I'd just find these or similar ideas/instructions on Pinterest!

Perfect gift for a family with crafty kids! It doesn't call for anything that you couldn't find at a target or Michaels, and all of the craft look reasonably doable for a family with small children as long as adults are guiding! I gifted it along with some candy so that the kids could get started right away!

This book is BEAUTIFUL and super smart. Unique craft ideas that normal people can actually make. Materials seem easy to find and directions and photography are so clear. I am doing the "fish pops" with my Girl Scout Troop this week when we work on our pollution in the oceans unit… I am sure they will want it to be a regular part of this season's meetings. Looking forward to using the ideas for holiday crafts in my children's classrooms. I can't wait for the next book.

Gave as a gift and the child loved it. Simple instructions, good photos. Fun project book.

I had great hopes for this book. The examples of the candy cane bowls, the cut out marshmallow letters, and the s'mores monsters in online previews looked great. I could not wait to see more creative ideas like this. Unfortunately, those were the best ideas in the book. The rest was ways to cut marshmallows and gumdrops and stick them back together. My kids love crafts and so does my girl scout troop but there are better ideas for free on Pinterest.

I absolutely love this book. I love it as much as my 4 year old daughter does.We are particularly fond of the marshmallow section.Going to the supermarket used to be a chore, now it's a treat.Every friend I have with kids is getting a copy.

This book is too bad as a textbook. Cannot be simpler anymore in explanation as well as examples, problems, anywhere. Just putting in what it has to have in the book. If you are refreshing knowledge, this may be a good one. But for NEW students, AVOID this book as possible as you can.

I'm a mechatronics/control engineering student and I couldn't recommend this book more. It's a very clear consise to the point book. It's great for learning classical and modern control theory and matlab and simulink. Super useful book!!

A pretty decent book for anyone taking an introductory dynamic systems class. Some chapters could use some work, especially the examples, but it got me through the course with an A, so I'm happy about that!

It does a good job at explaining most of the concepts. The author is a professor at my school and he is very intelligent. Worth the money.

This is a very usable and clever book. A real help to us.

Love this book. The explanations are good. But it is workout example that help me get the material. My teacher goes lighting fast and sometimes i cannot keep up with taking notes, or have time to ask questions, so i reside into reading and using the examples to help. They always come thru so far.
