Mowat enjoyed the area so much that he bought a schooner for further exploration. Soon afterward, a young woman fleeing the overeager attentions of an amorous mutt stumbled on board his ship and romance quickly followed. Mowat and Claire Wheeler spent the next decade sailing in the rocky bays, thick fogs and sudden squalls of the region. The author of 40 books, mostly on nautical and adventure themes, Mowat has a deep understanding of the sea and the natural world. His observations of the outporters are equally perceptive and provide a fascinating window into a little known corner of North America. Canada's most idiosyncratic province is as large a presence as Canada's most idiosyncratic writer in this moving memoir of the love of a woman and the love of a particular place. In 1957, Mowat boarded a steamer that plied Newfoundland's rugged coastline. It was love at first sight, and Mowat would revisit often until he bought his Happy Schooner. On one Newfoundland nautical adventure he met Claire Wheeler. He was married to another then and had two small children. Never trying to justify his behavior, Mowat presents how he transferred his affections and his domicile matter-of-factly. The emotional heart of the story lies in remote Burgeo, Newfoundland, where he and Claire settled. The book concludes bittersweetly when the killing of a trapped whale nearly becomes an international incident with Mowat in the thick of it. Mowat has visited whale killing before (A Whale for the Killing, 1972) but here offers a more personal perspective. This is the tale of two love stories -- one covered extensively, one almost glossed over by books' end.Farley Mowat came to Newfoundland in the early 1960s and fell in love, both with the land and its people, and with a young artist named Claire Wheeler. It's the former that Mowat dwells upon the most in this book, and as a reader I left frustrated because we learn so comparatively little about Claire and about their life together. It takes 1/3 of the book for Mowat to reveal that he was married when he met Claire, and that the the tug of his family -- including two sons -- delayed his eventual divorce. His former family is dismissed in a paragraph.Having faced the music, Mowat settles down with Claire aboard his famously unseaworthy boat, "Happy Adventure", the star the classic "The Boat Who Wouldn't Float." Readers of "The Boat" will be startled by anecdotes, names and dates changing from one book to another. It gives creedence to the charge leveled against Mowat that he never lets the facts get in the way of a good story.Ultimately this lovely book covers a period of but seven years, and ends just after Mowat's futile attempt to stop the people of his adopted home of Burgeo from killing a whale that has become trapped in a tidal pond. The whale died, the locals were savaged by the press, and the Mowats decided it was time to leave Burgeo and venture in Happy Adventure to Expo 67 (a voyage that nearly ended many times, if "The Boat" is to be believed.)This is a wonderful book but I wanted more -- what happened to Happy Adventure? What happened to Mowat's sons? Where did they settle after the Expo trip? Much has happened between 1967 and now! -- I hope to hear more about the Mowat's voyages though these most interesting times.

Love this guy.. another hidden treasure about a beautiful place. A mix of human romance and love of a disappearing culture. Ya can’t really appreciate it or write honestly about it unless you lived it.. and Farley did. A bit long for him, but well worth the literary journey.

Exceedingly happy with the condition of this used book by author Farley Mowat. It was a gift for a family member this Christmas who is eagerly consuming all that Mowat has written. This book arrived promptly and in "like new" condition.

Farley Mowat writes a moving story about how he met his wife Claire by accident while trying to escape a vicious dog, and, in doing so, also "kills two birds with one stone" by portraying the colorful, insular people of Newfoundland in the 1950's as well as the inhabitants of the almost unheard of French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon in the North Atlantic off the coast of St. John, NF. I would highly recommend this book to those who enjoy learning about new places and people, and at the same time would want to curl up with a well-written love story.

This is an ABRIDGED EDITION!!!! If you need to read this book for school, it might be helpful to know that it is not the complete version and you will be missing a lot of information. Amazon failed to mention it!!! Now I will have to find the original version and read it... again!!! What a waste of time!!!!

This book knocked my socks off. My limited knowledge of the battle to integrate Little Rock's Central High in 1957 didn't prepare me for Melba Moore Beals's account of the daily ordeal she and the other children had to survive to endure a year on the front lines of school integration. Should be required reading for all adults in our country-- and probably for high school students, too. The past is never dead. It's not even past.

The book itself is wonderful however, I was looking for an unabridged version for my child's school assignment, and the product summary did not indicate that this was not the unabridged version. I was very disappointed when I received the book and had to go elsewhere to find the version I was looking for.

I read this book in 8th grade. I read half of this book each niggt at bedtime with my 11 year old daughter and we discussed racism, as that has been a big issue in our country lately and I wanted her to understnad the history behind where these news stories are coming from. Hearing some of the language in this book was difficult, but necessary to allow us to understand why we never want to go back to a time like that again. Yes, my daughter learned the N word...and a few other swear words in this book. But we also learned some valuable lessons about our country, including racism, bigotry, sexism, friendship, economics, and inequality. We also made connections to faith in God and ourselves when things are difficult.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading the recollections and experiences of Melba. Well written and moving account of that first year in Central High. She does a nice job of sticking to the events as she experienced them without adding unnecessary commentary. She lets the events speak for themselves. Highly recommend.

I felt this book was so well written, as only Melba could have done. I was enthralled by her descriptive passages of the injury she and her friends endured. It's a page turner that I could barely put down. Loved her Grandma and the faith that saw her through. I was in junior high in CA at the time. Our schools were already integrated. This book really opened my eyes to the horrible conditions in Arkansas .

I'm so glad the author kept this piece of our history alive. When we read the headlines, it's clear we're not past the inequalities, the hatred, the self-justifications of the toxic racism the author experienced. I'd like to thank her here for remaining so stalwart and dignified. The author gives us insights into how difficult it is to break the barriers. The people who could'nt support her were certainly not evil, not moral slackers... they knew first-hand the power of the institutionalized hatred, and they knew the potential cost to their families... Not a mild rebuke. Not some mild social disapproval. One's house could be burned down in the middle of the night, or blown up. Lynchings were not unknown. And to add fuel to the fire, the local authorities, the state government, the military units called in were complicit in the open threats of violence — and sometimes the instances of actual violence — perpetrated against this handful of teenagers.

Read this book along with my daughter for her PreAP English class.Gut-wrenching. The writing is superb but the pain and horror of the author's experience as part of the "Little Rock 9" left me aching for those who have also been victimized due to race, religion, and sexual orientation. I highly recommend reading this book as a means of discussing the turbulent Civil Rights era with your child but also as a springboard to conversations concerning issues of bullying, persecution, and bigotry in our culture today.

I have a few felting books, and this one is my favorite. What's so wonderful about it is this--several fiber artists contributed to the book so the book doesn't follow one person's style. The projects are varied and interesting and unique to each artist. They're also fun and doable and utilitarian (some). Great book--contemporary and relevant and, again, fun!

I read the great reviews of this book and actually looked at a few of the projects inside online. If I had the opportunity to see the real book I wouldn't have bought it. The projects are fairly basic and not very well done. The explanations and instructions are sketchy, at best and the little snippet about the "legend" of how felting came to be is nonsense.This is one of those books that was created to ride the popularity of felting and sell books, it is not well written or well thought out. It does not to bring anything new to the table or actually teach anything. The photos are nice but that is about it.Boo

Love the colors and step by step tutorials. I have made almost every single thing on here.

Not as informative as I had hoped it would be. Would not recommend if you are just getting your feet wet and do not know anything about working with felt, like myself!

The OBG Classics edition published September 11, 2017, claims to be "the new translation." But IF it is somehow new -- and, by the way, no translator is identified -- what exactly has been translated? What is new about it? It is still written in the difficult-to-understand Middle English Chaucer used, and apart from spelling (or misspelling?) "his" as "hise" in line-1 [see NOTE at end] and throwing in some extra commas, this is pretty much the standard version. It is handsomely formatted and has an active TOC, but no introduction, no clarifications of archaic words, nothing but the seemingly original Middle English text. Calling itself "the new translation" strongly suggests this has been translated into easier-to-understand Modern English, but such is not the case here. Chaucer certainly rates 5-stars, but I have deducted one for the misrepresentation.FYI: An excellent Modern English version will be found in the Kindle Store for $.99 by A. S. Kline.NOTE: The first line normally reads: "Whan that Aprill with his shoures soote...." The words "shoures" and "soote" are each two syllables in Middle English pronunciation; thus the entire line rightly has the number of accented syllables Chaucer intended. If "his" (a one-syllable word) were improperly changed to "hise" (turning it into a two-syllable word, pronounced his-uh) -- as is done here -- that adds an unintended and, therefore, unacceptable extra syllable. I have to assume this is merely a typo; but how many other such errors are contained herein?

If you are going to read The Canterbury Tales, this is the way to go. The Middle-English may seem intimidating at first, but it is easier than one might think to sound out and understand. Of course, the annotation helps quite a bit too. These tales and their frame perfectly capture medieval life with it's lively characters and various settings. Ranging from poetic diversions, to dramatic, to adventures, all the the way to gruesome fables, and plenty of very funny (and memorable) bawdy humor. This earthy group of classic stories has something for everyone. The modern translation is also worth having as a companion, but this fine paperback is the one for authenticity.

Let's get this clear at the start: This is a review of Jill Mann's edition of the Canterbury Tales in its Kindle version. (It's a shame that Amazon can't distinguish between different editions of the classics when posting reviews! -- hint!) About the Tales themselves, I'll say only that they are both a classic and a blast, and if you can handle the Middle English, you have to read them in that language. Jill Mann's editorial work is smart and thorough, too. The print edition is a bargain at the price -- again, if you're OK reading Middle English. The Kindle edition, though was a little clumsy to use -- though, to be fair, I don't see how all the glosses and notes could have been presented better in a e-book. Wait, yes I can. The glosses on individual words and expressions are easy to find; the more extensive notes, which are very valuable, are not. It shouldn't have been hard to add a marginal symbol to reference a Note. Hence it's only four stars, not five. But it may well be the best e-book version on the market.

Here is a brief synopsis.At the Tabard Inn, a tavern in Southwark, near London, the narrator joins a company of twenty-nine pilgrims. The pilgrims, like the narrator, are traveling to the shrine of the martyr Saint Thomas Becket in Canterbury. The narrator gives a descriptive account of twenty-seven of these pilgrims, including a Knight, Squire, Yeoman, Prioress, Monk, Friar, Merchant, Clerk, Man of Law, Franklin, Haberdasher, Carpenter, Weaver, Dyer, Tapestry-Weaver, Cook, Shipman, Physician, Wife, Parson, Plowman, Miller, Manciple, Reeve, Summoner, Pardoner, and Host. (He does not describe the Second Nun or the Nun’s Priest, although both characters appear later in the book.) The Host, whose name, we find out in the Prologue to the Cook’s Tale, is Harry Bailey, suggests that the group ride together and entertain one another with stories. He decides that each pilgrim will tell two stories on the way to Canterbury and two on the way back. Whomever he judges to be the best storyteller will receive a meal at Bailey’s tavern, courtesy of the other pilgrims.I won't go into detail about all the tales that are told except to say that I found them witty, entertaining, and thoughtful.

I am a voracious fantasy reader, and will read almost ANYTHING involving magic, other worlds, and political intrigue. I am also a member of the LGBT community, and it is very, very hard to find decent fantasy books with LGBT characters to relate to. This book was everything that I have been searching for for 21 years! The story pulls you right in. I started it at 10 pm and finished it at 2 am. I couldn't bring myself to put it down. I sincerely hope to see more from this author.

So, the book just came out today, I thought to read the first chapter or three. Eight hours later I finished my 'quick preview'.The book was a little slow starting but meticulously researched and with characters that grew on you.The mystery reveal was barely telegraphed, but looking back was quite apparent.Nicely done.No little flowers of princesses here. We are led to slowly meet and learn the major characters, and by the end, they are dear friends of ours, and I am saddened to see them go.400 pages, devoured cover to cover, and wouldn't be upset to see more.Thank you.

I value reading about the struggle of my people and how they can become triumphant. It gives me hope.I will say that the first third of the book was very slow. I'll also admit that I didn't love Denna at first. She seemed very frivolous and completely at the mercy of her emotions. Overtime she grew on me. I think that's in part by her love for Mare. I fell in love with Denna through the eyes of Mare. Mare showed me the qualities I was overseeing in Denna. It was invigorating to have a character's pov change my perspective on another character. I've never had that happen before. The action in the book wasn't in abundance, another small gripe that I had. I often felt like the love between the two women was too much at the forefront, even if it felt more like a timid cat & mouse game for most of the book.On the romance alone and the themes it's promoting, I'm happily looking forward to a sequel. If you love passionate characters, gay lovers, and war & betrayal, you will love this book

In this tale, a smart, nerdy, somewhat introverted princess married off to a foreign prince finds herself falling for the tomboyish, somewhat rebellious sister of her betrothed. There is action, intrigue, and adventure, with a lot of the subplots you'd expect from a fairy tale about nobles in a pseudo-medieval world, but with the subversion of a lot of tropes, too. The story also explores how one defines one's culture, religion, duty, and sense of self, which was interesting and thought-provoking.There is relatively little problem with any character being interested in a member of the same-sex (with perhaps one exception), but instead there is a lot of discrimination against people born with magic skills. With the issues faced by magic users in the story, the author successfully weaves a parallel to the discrimination many LGBTQIA+ people face in the real world, past and present, but without being too "in your face" about it.I really enjoyed the development of the two main characters, as individuals and as a couple. I also want to applaud the author for crafting a beautiful platonic friendship between one of the leading ladies and an ex-boyfriend, which is something you don't see very often in these kinds of books.

I was completely impressed by Power Position Your Agency. It is tough to find a book about how to become a successful insurance agent but this is a wonderful starting point. This gives you a better understanding of what it takes to be a very successful agent. This is only one path but it is a path that led to the authors success and gives people either new ideas or wonderful starting points to build a solid and successful insurance agency. If you want to find something insurance specific, this is the book.

This a pretty good book and has been supported / promoted by key people in large insurance companies.If you work for an insurance agent or are one, I recommend this.Although dated, the fundamentals are sound.Pair it up with a book like 'Eat that Frog' Brian Tracey or '12 Week Year' to really make your system hum.Alright, now back to the phones.

I like this book and I feel like Troy tells the truth about how a lot of agents work by themselves and peddle policies without really growing. Troy really does well with his customer service and staff. This is something a lot of agents can learn from. The one down fall I see with his system is relying on the annual review to make most of the new sales. Obviously it works for Troy, but I think this is just one of the parts to a successful agency! I definitely recommend this book to agents that are new to the business and asking if staff members are worth the price of payroll!

Book was a good read, but ... production of book itself (the small type-style compared to the available page size) was below the level I would expect from a book, even a paperback book selling at this price. The content was still worth it, but thought the production values could have made it better!

This has really good tips if you are starting your own agency. If you are a producer or service agent, probably would keep it moving.

A good book to understand the evolution of today's immigration law.Americans might be under the perception that until recently, we have always closely guarded our borders and regulated entrants who mostly "came here legally" by adhering to immigration law.But as Salyer's work points out, America's immigration law developed over time. She uses the experience of immigration law vis-a-vis Chinese immigrants in the late 1800s to make a couple points. First, immigration law within the context of regulatory agencies responsible for its administration, arose in the late 1800s. Second, that early regulation was aimed at keeping out ethnically or socially undesirable groups like the Chinese, who were otherwise migrating in accordance with American practice. And finally, that the expansion of immigration regulation was based upon the Chinese experience and soon applied to other less-than-desirable groups.Laws Harsh as Tigers gives a revealing look at the rise of immigration law. It forces us to rethink the idea of "sovereign borders" and to reflect back on when immigration was part of the common law. Only later did the idea of an administrative system, largely separated from and independent of, the court system, develop. With this, the American government gained much power to formulate, administer and interpret immigration law--as the author would argue, to the detriment of the rights of immigrants.In the first part, the book provides a look into how Chinese immigrants faced new restrictions and how they fought back using the courts. Eventually new laws and self-guided administrative procedures restricted this route to them. The second part of the book catalogs the development of administrative law in immigration. It shows how immigration restrictionists, often those within the immigration bureaucracy itself, used the powers of administration to shape immigration.Both halves should give the reader insight into the creation of immigration law, the emergence of restrictive immigration policy, and how both fit into the expansion of the national government in the late 1800s and early/mid 1900s.

This is the definitive history of the legal struggle against the Chinese Exclusion laws that banned almost all Chinese nationals from entering the United States between 1882 and 1943. It shows the racist underpinnings of the legal doctrine that today that limits rights of all of us, citizens and non-citizens at the border. At the same time, it shows the power of an organized legal resistance, and the ways the judicial branch maintained its adherence to the rule of law in the face of bigotry. Salyer documents that Chinese brought over 7,000 cases challenging the laws and their implementation in the first decade of exclusion, and were so successful that Congress ultimately stripped courts of the power to review many exclusion decisions. As--or more--relevant to current political and legal fights as when it was published, this is a must read for those interested in immigration, law, policy, and democracy.
