For anyone who thinks of Long Island aircraft manufacturers as beginning and ending with Grumman and Republic, I should tell you that there are some 80 manufacturers in this book!Of course, that includes Brooklyn and Queens (which are, physically, on the island), and most of these manufacturers were small companies that produced few aircraft and didn't last very long. But it also includes well-known names like Brewster, Curtiss, EDO, Loening, Sikorsky, Sperry and Vought, all of which operated on the island for periods of time, some quite considerable.The author, curator of the Cradle of Aviation Museum at Mitchel Field, is highly knowledgeable on the topic. The chapters are by county, and within each county the manufacturers are presented alphabetically. For the major makers, only certain types are included, since their stories are fairly well known. As with most Arcadia titles, the photos are in black-&-white but are well reproduced.A few minor quibbles: for some of the minor manufacturers, their locations in their respective counties are not divulged, something that would be nice to know. And some of the superlatives are contradictory; for instance, the Loening Air Yacht is pronounced "the first practical retractable landing gear amphibian" even as the earlier OA-1 is on the opposite page!On the positive side, the author generally does tell the eventual fate of most of the smaller manufacturers, and it's interesting how often multiple builders used the same facilities. One coincidence is that the buildings that Fairchild used in Farmingdale before moving to Maryland were eventually taken over by Seversky, which became Republic, which became a subsidiary of.....Fairchild!A fascinating look at the history of aircraft manufacture in the "cradle of aviation", and recommended to all historians of American aviation.

Reading this book made me uncomfortable for a lot of reasons. I was a young marine and part of the volunteer group that first went into Hue at the beginning of the battle. My outfit was 2/1, then at Con Thien, so I was only in Hue at the beginning and took no part in the serious fighting that came later.I thought the book was carefully researched, and well written, and as honest as he could be. My criticism is only that the author glosses over the fact that journalists did have a staggering effect on the fighting, and often their stories did fuel the anti-war movement back home.It occurs to me that if journalists had written about the Battle of the Bulge in the same tone that Walter Cronkite and others portrayed Hue, we would have sued for peace with Germany.However, the book is painfully accurate about what it was like to be in Vietnam, in the Tet of 1968, and what it was like to be in a firefight. I took no exception to his portrayal of those in leadership as being both competent and incompetent because it’s true of any organization. And I appreciate the portrayal of marines and soldiers who might not have ever gotten a thank-you back home, but who proved themselves hero’s every day.I recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of the battle.

5 StarsIf you only ever read one book about Vietnam, you could do a lot worse than Bowden’s “Hue 1968.” Other good choices would be Karnow’s “Vietnam: A History” and Sheehan’s “A Bright and Shining Lie.” However, Hue 1968 delivers not only the facts of the American tragedy in Vietnam , or even a particular point of view of the facts, but it also accurately depicts the feelings of the Americans serving in Vietnam, as well as those of Americans at home, and the Vietnamese who could not escape the war.I was a young marine in Vietnam at the time of the Tet offensive in 1968. I was not an officer and had no strategic view of the conflict. I didn’t even have a clear tactical view of the events in which I was directly involved. That said, Mr. Bowden’s book is such a profound telling of the events that I can almost smell the rice paddies. It is exactly this ability of Mr. Bowden that allows us the readers to either relive events from our own past or experience them ,as nearly as possible, as events that are worlds apart from our experience. He did it in “Black Hawk Down” and and again in“Guests of the Ayatollah.” And now he may have written the best book of his lifetime.Recommended: Absolutely.

Mark Bowden is an outstanding writer. I read a lot of books about Vietnam and Mr. Bowden goes into so much detail, that you really can put yourself right there in the battle. In fact, I was there. On January 31st 1968 I was with Echo battery2/11 in Phu Bai, the night the TET offensive started. We supported 2/5 at the time. Although I didn't set foot in Hue at the time of the battle, we dropped some 155mm shells on the city. We kept saying "why is 2/5 having such a hard time up in Hue". Little did we know that there were 4 regiments of NVA and VC in the city. I went back to Hue last year and visited the old imperial capital. When I walked down Le Loi street, I was overcome with emotion thinking of the Marines that were wounded and killed in that city.

This is an excellent book about a decisive battle in the Vietnam war that I had never really known much about despite reading several books about the war.If you've read any of the author's other books, you'll know what to expect--excellent research, good writing, accounts of both the macro and the micro issues. In this book, while the author provides some coverage of both the North Vietnamese and US (as well as civilians), most of the book concentrates on the US, in particular the Marines. The book is pretty even-handed between the sides, although there are few accounts of the actual fighting from the Vietnamese side. The author also provides in epilogue in which the subsequent fates of the many of the people is described, which is always nice.While the author paints a very sympathetic portrait of most of the marines and soldiers caught in the fighting, he generally has a veryr unflattering view of US higher commanders, who simply wouldn't believe that the North Vietnamese could take and hold a major city, because it did not conform to their preconceptions of what the enemy was capable of, or what strategy they would adopt. As a result, for several days after the city had fallen, US commanders sent laughably small contingents--individual companies of a couple of hundred men--to retake the city, occupied by up to 10,000 enemy troops. Commanders on the ground were ridiculed for their incompetence and timidity for their failures to retake the city, and ordered again and again into futile attacks.Westmoreland in particular comes in for withering criticism; he seems to have been so completely hoodwinked by the North Vietnamese that they were planning a major attack on Khe Sanh (which never came), that he dismissed the rest of the Tet offensive, and the battle in Hue in particular, as diversions by the crafty enemy to distract the Americans from the impending battle at Khe Sanh.I wanted to mention a few minor criticisms which didn't detract much from the book for me, but maybe more important to others:--the book includes too many characters which are mentioned a couple of times in the book, but that's it. This is particularly true for many of the civilians trapped in the city, but also for many of the soldiers, such as a Marine captain who was there from the first day of the battle and then rejoined the ARVN unit he advised in the citadel for the second half of the fighting--what was his experience with the ARVN troops like? Generally, it would have been interesting to find out more about the experiences of more people mentioned in the book.--speaking of ARVN, for some reason the author does not really cover them at all;--the author focuses almost exclusively on infantry, marines, and tankers, but it might be been interesting to hear from some of the sailors on the Mike boats, the helicopter pilots, etc.--while the book includes some maps, I think that more maps would have been helpful.

It is a solid approach that can benefit everyone. I appreciated the view that a good manager/team leader needs to evaluate where their team members are in their development in order to manage effectively. I have had some bosses who I wish had read this book and applied the principles in it. More often than not, I feel like managers are too busy to lead, which is such a waste. I think the advice in this book is helpful for everyone in all kinds of different environments. Read it!

This book was such a great read. It made me think and assess where am I on the S-curve and whether I should disrupt myself to continue. Education is a different type of organization, as some teachers would love to keep teaching the same grade for the rest of their career. Sometimes that's great, because they bring something new to the classroom each year. But it could also become rote and routine, lacking the passion of being in the sweet spot. As a school principal, this book was invaluable. It helped me to think about where my teachers and staff are on their S curves, and how we can work together to disrupt or continue their trajectories. I would like to see my staff's answers on an S-curve survey in aggregate so I can better make decisions for the overall organization and the individual people within it.

As a co-creator of a start-up company it is important for me to know how to handle all aspects of the business. Unfortunately, my experience with recruitment is very limited, so I have had to resort to several sources to familiarize myself with the subject. Build an A Team has been a good resource for recruiting new talent and building a productive work team. One of the most relevant aspects has been the S-curve and how to choose employees located at different stages of that learning curve. I have virtually purchased all of Chris' books and for good reason. They are excellent resources and skill builders. As I heard Claus Levin once say, "most guitarist rise to an intermediate level and never move beyond that". The reasoning is we never work on things that challenge us beyond our abilities. Once the getting gets touch, we move on to something else. All of Chris' books will challenge you beyond your abilities. Pick this one up and all of his others, you won't be disappointed. A book (Kindle) for $10, wow you can't get many professional guitar lessons for that price. And trust me, this book will be teaching you for years.

I really enjoyed this book. I already owned Chris Brooks' other 2 recent books. This one I think is my favorite of the 3. There is so many examples in this book, which is the really cool thing. I mainly was looking for new creative and advanced arpeggio ideas, and there was plenty of that in this which was satisfying. I got the kindle edition, more bang for the buck!!

I'm a metal guy and this book is definitely providing me with tools and ideas to break out of the standard licks of the genre. The examples are incredibly creative sonically and rhythmically and when incorporated into your own playing, will certainly help you stand out among your peers. Very well done!!!

Im only going through the first part of this book, and im already hooked!Playing with triads to create melodic ideas and modal sounds is really cool, and the instructions on how to take the examples taught in this book, and how to manipulate them into your own style is pretty sweet as well.Although there are already thousands of learning matirials out there, it seems like chris has managed to add something new in a simple way with every book that comes out.

I have 3 or 4 books from this guy, all of them are good, I'll keep buying them, a 1/2 hour guitar lesson cost more than the book and you get way more information from the book.

Chris Brooks' guitar instruction books are the best on the market. Advanced Arpeggio Soloing is his best yet. It's great because he breaks down each lick and arpeggio into easy to digest segments, so you can master each one before moving to the next one. Chris really is a great player and teacher. He is very accessible on his face book page and Youtube. He is one of the very few teachers that actually respond to your questions and comments!

Very happy with the book! Looking forward to digging into it some more. Just got the audio files the other day so that's going to help even more! Chris Rocks! Getting more books hopefully soon!
