Review

"An illuminating exploration of ADHD, brimming with intelligence and insight. Schwarz reveals the powerful cultural and economic forces fueling its widespread diagnosis and drug treatment. Those with the disorder will hear a voice of compassion. And those who may be misdiagnosed, a clarion note of caution." —Jerome Groopman, M.D., Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, staff writer, New Yorker “ADHD Nation is a true rarity – a book that confronts an important subject with the authority of an expert, makes its case with the urgency of a red alert, and moves at the pace of a thriller." —Daniel Okrent, New York Times bestselling author of Last Call"In this powerful, necessary book, Schwarz exposes the dirty secrets of the growing ADHD epidemic." —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)"ADHD Nation should be required reading for those who seek to understand how a field that once aimed to ameliorate the behavioral problems of children in a broad therapeutic context abdicated its mission to the stockholders of corporations like Shire and Lilly. Schwarz is sounding an alarm for a fire that looks nowhere near abating." —The New York Times Book Review"This eye-opening book should be a hit with drug-industry skeptics and worried parents who want to read a well-reported, definitive guide to this misunderstood and overly medicated disorder." —Booklist"Mr. Schwarz’s disciplined focus gives his book clarity and even utility." —The Wall Street Journal"ADHD Nation is a necessary book. Schwarz has done a fine job on a maddening topic, and everyone who’s interested in hyperactivity, attention spans, stimulants, and the current state of American health care should grab a copy." —New York Magazine"A dazzling piece of journalism, based on extensive research and an enormous number of interviews...an outstanding exposé." —New Republic"[Schwarz's] nimble investigation interweaves the narratives of pharmaceutical companies with those of child psychologist Keith Conners, who led ADHD's 'Manhattan Project', and young people grappling with the medical fallout. An intriguing sidelight is the misuse of ADHD drugs as performance enhancers." —Nature

I had high hopes for this book. I was convinced on reading a few reviews and knowing something of the author's other work that this book would lead me to understand the history of ADHD, the heavy pushing of drug companies and how we got from there to here in this moment in time. The problem is that for most of this book, there is story after story after story (almost all short) of descriptions of kids and what they and their parents went through. These stories and the running dialog of doctors, drug companies, and court cases makes reading the whole book a challenge, at least for me. How many stories of kids, parents, doctors, drug companies, and court cases does it take to explain all of this? Not this many, trust me. After reading this book I was left with "and the answer is?". No answer came. I can really sum it all up by saying that drugs are a useful tool but with the warning that for many kids (and adults) there can be other tools available. Having said that, the other warning is that ALL drugs have side effects so use them if there is no other way of dealing with a real problem. There's the added complication of that "real problem" and how to tell if there really is a real problem. All kids come with problems - at least all the ones that I have ever known. Life is all about dealing with problems and learning what it takes to be happy. So how does one know when the problem is too big to ignore? That's step one and the book makes that very clear but I knew that without having to read story after story. A good writer (or a good editor) knows how to compile the multitudes of stories into just a few to illustrate the point without having to prove how much background work was done and how many interviews were conducted. Others may find this book just what they needed to help understand all of this. Others will find it way too much of a pretty good thing.

Alan hits the nail on the head with what's happening in America and our kids. As parents of a wonderful ADHD young man, we struggled for years to get our son help. My wife's a wonderfully talented teacher and we worked together to get him the help he needed and thought the medicine was actually helping (it does remove symptoms!) but, in reality it was paint over rust sold to us by the amazingly strong, self-reinforcing ecosystem Schwarz details in his book.Everything I knew to be true about ADHD before I read the book were either in the book or I realized I was wrong after looking at more evidence. I only wish I had this book to read 15 years ago. It's not the medicine isn't good for some, it's that it's not good for the vast majority of kids and it is effectively "Paint over Rust" Only in America will you get a pill first for and ADHD diagnosis, for when you're feeling down or when you can't sleep. Much of America is being run over by our pharmaceutical companies looking to sell you another daily pill prescription rather than help you get fixed.

Overall, I found the book well written, engaging, and easy to read. I found the structure of book, briefly foreshadowing topics found later in the book, kept me interested and wanting to read more. It was easy to understand and not written in overly complication science jargon. Any average reader with average reading ability will be able to understand the book without difficulty. The book also presented its argument in a very logical manner and at least recognized that ADHD is in fact a legitimate diagnosis. For these reasons, I am giving the book two stars instead of one star. Sadly, the book is deeply flawed in several areas. First, I understand the purpose of the book was to expose the alleged over diagnosis of ADHD, however, I think it did not focus enough on the legitimacy of ADHD and the issues untreated and undiagnosed ADHD can cause. I think the book should have been more balanced. The book had a few sentences, saying ADHD is a real diagnosis, can cause severe problems, and people with severe impairment are helped by medication, here and there, but, did not devote enough time to the topic. The book should have spent a couple chapters exploring the importance of an accurate ADHD diagnosis, the problems it can cause, and the benefit of medication. I believe this would have made its argument stronger because it would not have seemed so overtly biased. In short, I was unconvinced the author truly believes in ADHD as a legitimate diagnosis because he never spent more than a couple sentences in the entire 200+ page book discussing that part of the debate (i.e. ADHD is real and can cause severe impairment). If he explored both sides of the debate (ADHD is real and it is over diagnosed) the book would be better balanced and I would be more convinced the author truly believes ADHD is real. Next, I was very disheartened about the focus on the addictive potential of stimulants, especially at drug rehabs (those run by Jamison and when Jamison questioned the use of stimulants for the people who are recovering from other drug addictions in the facility he worked in). Again, this was a very one-sided argument and, to make matters worse, he supported the addictive potential of the drugs by people who were faking ADHD to get the drugs (Richard Fee, Jamison, etc.) or people who were misdiagnosed (Kristen) and never the people with a proper diagnosis and legitimate need for the medication. These people started abusing the drugs and never had a legitimate need for them. I am not saying the drugs do not have addictive potential, but, high addictive potential does not translate or force people to abuse them. There are many factors at work when someone starts abusing drugs, and addictive potential or high addictive potential has very little to do with it. People abuse drugs for a variety of reasons, trauma, escape, family struggles, abuse, self-medication, and a much better predictor of whether people will abuse drugs is their view of drugs and the expectancy effect. This means the people who believe drugs will solve their problems or make them feel fantastic, like Jamison and school, ais much more important than whether the drug has the potential of being addictive. People abuse schedule 4 drugs (modafil, neurotin, ambien) just as much, and maybe more so since those drugs are deemed to have little to no addictive potential, as schedule 2 drugs. Further, most people who take schedule 2 drugs (narcotics and stimulants) with a proper diagnosis and legitimate medical need do not become addicted and do not abuse the medication. This is because these people view the drugs as medication and not a drug with magical properties. There is some research supporting the expectancy effect, self-fulfilling prophecy, and lack of priming (ingestion of a drug does not cause people, even addicts, to use drugs uncontrollably). Further, I believe he was completely unfair to the people who have a dual diagnosis ADHD and substance use disorders. There are numerous double blind placebo controlled studies that demonstrated people with dual diagnosis, ADHD and substance use disorders, can properly take stimulants without worsening the substance abuse. These outcomes were based on self-reports and drug tests. Further, studies have found most people with the dual diagnosis ADHD and addiction take their medication responsibility. Many studies conclude stimulants should not necessarily be avoided with dual diagnosis, ADHD and addiction, and using stimulants in that populations with close monitoring is effective at treating the ADHD without worsening the drug addiction. Again, there are studies that do not support priming (any intake of drugs causes uncontrollable drug use). However, the book implies people with addiction issues should never be given stimulants (especially the way Jamison runs his rehabs and his comments when he was working at the different rehab). Lastly, I think the book is unfairly singling out ADHD without talking about the broader context and problems. The book brings up the very good points most people who are making ADHD diagnoses are not mental health professionals, do not do a thorough and appropriate evaluation, do not do a differential diagnosis to rule out medical conditions, do not collect collateral evidence by talking to family and friends, and the role “big pharma” is playing. The book also makes the very good point these things combined creates misdiagnoses, over diagnoses, and children and now adults taking unnecessary potent medication. The problem is these problems and issues apply to basically every mental health diagnosis and if we looked at each diagnosis separately we would find misdiagnoses, poor evaluations, no differential diagnoses, and non-mental health professionals making mental health diagnoses. I don’t know if ADHD is more over-diagnosed than other mental health conditions are over-diagnosed for the same reasons. However, I do know kids as young as 2 are being diagnosed as bipolar and given Seroquel and other atypical anti-psychotics which are just as dangerous and harmful or more dangerous and harmful than the stimulants. I also know kids in the foster care system are given powerful atypical anti-psychotics at rates much higher than kids not in foster care. The book would have been much better if it talked about the boarder issue of unqualified general family doctors making quick mental health diagnoses, young children taking all sorts of very powerful psychotropic drugs, besides stimulants, the loosening of many DSM disorder criteria, “big pharma” pushing drugs and controlling research and so forth. The issues the book brings up are not unique to ADHD, but, to the medical profession in general. As such, I feel ADHD is being unfairly treated as this book and argument could be made about practically any mental health diagnosis in the DSM or the diagnoses given out from uneducated and unqualified doctors. To emphasize this last point a recent study found that about 13% of kids diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder are misdiagnosed and lose that diagnosis due to more information, maturity, or better assessment. While autism isn't usually treated with drugs, some of the symptoms are, and it is clearly over diagnosed due to the some of the same reasons ADHD is over diagnosed. Clearly this isn't just a problem with ADHD. Now whether autism or ADHD is over diagnosed I have no idea, but it is worth investigating before unfairly singling out ADHD.

Review

This new graphic nonfiction series offers biographical treatments that highlight a technological breakthrough or innovation. Though produced by various illustrators, titles are visually similar: enticing covers, dynamic fonts, bold colors, and vibrant illustrations. Comic book-style word balloons feature fairly sophisticated vocabulary and occasional quotes or other primary source material. Each selection includes titled chapters, a table of contents, summary fact pages, further reading suggestions, and recommended Internet sites. There is close correlation between the dialogue and depicted actions and illustrations, which will provide visual reinforcement for struggling readers. These deceptively slim volumes convey a tremendous amount of information and vocabulary, and should attract attention from reluctant and enthusiastic readers alike. Bibliography. Glossary. Index. Recommended. --Library Media Connection; Vol. 25, No. 7; Pages 83-84, April 2007The Graphic Library series books are perfect for both boys and girls who want to learn in an interesting way. What child does not like learning from a book that is in graphic style? This particular book is part of the Inventions and Discoveries series. Today, we take it for grated with our cell phones and computers, that we can send and receive information in seconds. In the 1800 s when Morse s mother was ill, it took a letter a week to reach him, and he had no idea if she was still alive when he left to go 3,000 miles to see her. He became obsessed with the idea of using electricity as a means of conveying information at a fast rate and pursued this idea with great vigor. He was fortunate to live and see his Morse code and telegraph become two of America s greatest inventions. It is amazing how much information is given to the reader in just 32 pages. This book would be perfect in a classroom or school library. It also lends itself to the science and social studies classroom libraries. Graphic format makes it perfect for students who are reluctant readers and never seem to finish a book on their own or for young adults who want to read anything they can get their hands on. The full-color graphics make an enormous impact on the story. The author inserts a box on most pages that includes narration, giving extra facts to the reader to help with comprehension. Vocabulary has been well selected, and this book is an excellent resource that could be used for writing a summary, a book report, or a full research project. At the end of the book, the author includes more facts about Morse and the telegraph, a glossary, a list of internet sites, additional books for more information, and a bibliography. I highly recommend this book. --Childrens Literature Comprehensive Database, January 2007Finalist of the 2007 Distinguished Achievement Award --Association of Educational Publishers, June 2007

OK but missing the telegraph's first use coast to coast at Utah Transcontinental Rail Ceremony May 10 1869.Also more about American Experience implementing this invention, such as the Native Americans reaction cutting the wires and using copper for jewelry or the fact that laying the wires across territories actually made the railroad and major routes today connect. And the beginning of the 'stock broker' was really the telegraph worker tracking the lines....So the impact on the country as a megatechnology was understated. The first telegraph coast to coast to Washington DC from Utah and to San Francisco from Utah united the country EAST TO WEST at a time when NORTH TO SOUTH post civil war was weak and divided.Too much color on every page also need some white space to get through it. Lots of great content nonetheless as an invention.Art and science are much more connected in makerspaces these days, and the architecture layout of what the telegraph must have required, the challenges, and push to do this from Lincoln carried thru after his death. The contribution to the industrial revolution in finance and industry very understated. Also the required materials - copper- came from Great Lakes and that is forgotten too how that was center of universe for the early American entrepreneur.

I bought this for my child's elementary school presentation. It was written in a way that kept him interested while giving enough facts for a great presentation. He scored well, enjoyed reading it and learned a lot. In the age of text messaging and constant communication I feel like Samuel Morse should be more of a household name. Highly recommended.

They would be great if we were school kids in about 4th or 5th grade> I personally did not need all that information at 77 yes of age, if I would have known it was a comic book I would not have order it.

Came quickly and was a nice companion to the telegraph I also bought. Daughter loved. Lots of facts and good illustration.

My boys, ages 8 and 10, love reading about historical events with these books, which are more like graphic novels (comic books). The book manages to include all the important facts in a fun and entertaining way.

This is a history of Samuel Morse and the telegraph. It is presented as a graphic comic- which is great for the younger set! Kept my 9 year old son's attention- as we are working on his Science Fair project- and he was able to process the information in this book and understand it.

Informative text from start to finish.

Review

John Hermann, a.k.a. The King of the Alps, has ridden every motorcycle-worthy pass in the Alps, and is positively addicted to the practice. I will boast that I have been riding the Alps longer than he has, since I began in 1957 on my NSU 250, when the 6,800-foot Monte Giovo Pass (Jaufenpass in German) was still dirt. And I have been back many, many times, but Hermann has dedicated himself to riding every road and has been over passes that are still on my to-do agenda. On his pass-bagging list he has over 300 passes, and maybe I've been on 200 of them. This Alpine chain of mountains curves for some 700 miles from the French Riveria through Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Italy all the way over to Slovenia on the Adriatic Sea, and Hermann covers 75 different routes in these mountains, which are grouped into 20 sections. A section would be a part of the Alps where you might want to stay a few days. Each route is well-described, and if there is a Gasthaus on top of the pass where you can get a cup of hot cocoa, that is detailed. Some passes have a day of the week on which motorcyclists congregate, and he tells you that. In each section he mentions hotels he has enjoyed. Reading this book will have you counting the days until you leave. - Clement Salvadori, RiderMagazine.com

The European middle class is affluent and this is reflected in the prices. We drink tap water and have shower curtains...etc. Drink and drive is a no go.Big breakfasts are rare.Always check if your hotel takes credit cards. Some only take cash, and give no receipts. Mastercard is American.....not always popular. Visa is accepted more often. American Express can be used for scraping ice off the windscreen. Many of the listed routes are jam packed with traffic. The traffic has increased enormously the last few years.Don't discuss US politics....Traffic violations are fined beyond belief. A minor speeding ticket can easily be more 500 USD.Have a great trip !

Bought this after a receiving a recommendation from a fellow rider on ADVRider.com. This book is literally jam packed full of the best roads in the Alps and the author does a fantastic job of breaking things down into manageable chunks and rides. Really solid travel companion!

The book provided helpful tips regarding local roads, sites to see and details regarding customs and lodging throughout the regions covered. Well researched. Will be very helpful when I embark on explorations this riding season.

Very valuable information, well illustrated and will prove helpful on an upcoming trip.

fun book!

These books are amazingly detailed and full of information. I am just jealous because the multi-talented author has had the opportunity to ride so many roads and visit so many towns and villages throughout the Alps. Highly recommend it.

For all of the buzz about this book and the "King of the Alps" claim, this book is disappointing on many levels.I have no idea about what's available in the UK. I'm not aware of any other US produced Alps guides, making this book the only one easily found in the US. Despite the comments that follow, the book is about the only choice for planing a trip in any part of the Alps. ("The Alps" is a huge area from the Spanish/French border and into Slovenia - it's not "only" France, Switzerland, and Austria/Northern Italy)Place names... I'll work with the German speaking parts of Switzerland, Austria, and the Italian South Tirol. The Southern Tirol is in Italy but 60% of the population speaks German. Place names exist in German and Italian. This complicated for many people. For example, Jaufenpass in German is Passo di Monte Giovo in Italian. Some passes, like Jaufenpass are usually known by their German name while others, such as Passo dello Stelvio, are known by their Italian name. The same thing happens with place names. Reschensee in German is Lago di Resia in Italian. Hermann uses the Italian names and sometimes mentions the German names. Some maps use both, some use one or the other. This leaves the reader to sort out which place is which, depending on the language used. While the book lists a huge list of passes, the number of passes described in any measure is far less. And those descriptions often lack any real detail. Passo dello Stelvio / Stilfserjoch is a good example of this. There is one road up and over the pass, as usual. The distinction is the east road (coming from Prato Allo Stelvio / Prad am Stilfserjoch) was built originally by the Austrians (when South Tirol was part of Austria). It's still in good repair. However, what really matters is this road has 48 hairpins on the way up. For riders new to hairpins, this is not the place to start learning. The west road, towards Bormio, has fewer hairpins, a few tunnels, and the road usually is under repair or should be (Hermann does mention this). He says something about the "Austrian" road is often closed. Perhaps in early spring or late fall (definitely closed during the winter), but otherwise, rain, sun, fog... it's open. He says there are a couple of hotels on the pas, and lists two; there are four immediately on the pass' saddle and two or three more while coming up from Prato/Prad. He's correct that the top of the pass seems like a circus, with lots of motorcycles, bicycles, cars, campers, and more. But it's part of the fun of climbing "Stelvio". And he misses on one of the institutions: Bruno's wurst stand. Bruno stands under the yellow awning over his grill, turning out great wursts, with all kinds of toppings including Louisiana hot sauce, all while delivering a non-stop monologue in at least four languages. Not every pass is worthy of or needs this sort of detail. But the "big name" passes are often shortchanged, and so is the reader. The maps, accompanying a chapter about a collection of passes, are little more than a rough idea of where the passes are. There's no detail (route numbers, if available) about the roads with passes. Converting the pass locations to GPS-friendly locations is a challenge. And some pass names don't make it to a map, but are mentioned only as "go over passes A, B, and C to get to Some Big Pass". Finding international borders is another challenge - they're small and faint. Crossing from Austria to Italy or Germany is almost unnoticed. In some places crossing into Switzerland is, too, but in some places, it's very much "passport please". It's worth knowing which border is being crossed. His descriptions favor biker (that is, rider) hotels, bike cafes, and biker meeting points. That's fine for people who want to join a mob of riders, but some people want to settle down somewhere for a little less chaos and maybe talk with only a couple of riders. Those places get far less mention. In general, hotels tend towards the expensive. They offer spas, massages, a pool, workout rooms, and more, on top of the restaurant / dining room. If all that's needed is a place to get cleaned up and get some rest, there are far less expensive, but still quite good, alternatives. Those details are limited. There is some other "how the local folks do it" material that is... well, maybe that's how it looks to a foreigner, but it's not correct. And then there's the language issue.I don't speak Italian, or French, but I do speak German. Hermann simply has, in very specific ways, little respect for the language. German contains four letters not used in English. These letters, "a", "o", and "u" (I hope Amazon gets this right - ä ö ü) all have two dots over them, the "umlaut". They are as important as "a", "o", and "u" are in English. But Hermann dismisses them as somehow quaint and not needed. That is simply not true. For anyone who can't write or type the letters, the accepted form is to add an "e" after the umlauted letter to make "ae", "oe", and "ue". However he spells Flüelapass (or Flueelapass) as Fuelapass. Most search engines will quickly tell anyone using them that "Fluelapass" is misspelled. (The four letter looks like this:ß or like an unusual "B". It represents two S' together. The most common example is to see it used for the S' in "strasse" - street. This letter is used less and less, and can be safely ignored. But if it shows up somewhere, it's useful to know about it.)The final point is about the index. It's confusing. Going back to Passo dello Stelvio/Stilfserjoch, the index lists it (as Stelvio pass) on pages 164-166, 169, 171, 175, 178. Pages 164-166 have the written description, but photos continue to 167. Page 169 has the map including Stelvio. If pages 171, 175, 178 have the word Stelvio on them, I can't find it. Stilfserjoch gets one entry, 164, even though 164-167 are about the same place. The book is usable, but I don't recommend regarding it as the final word on the Alps. Use touring and adventure web sites to find people who've been there. Consider looking for British guides, often available on the web in the usual selling sites. As the countries' tourist information offices for information - as always, web search engines are very helpful. For those who speak even a little German and know about on-line language translators, there's an excellent series of German guides available on Amazon. Follow my reviews for more information about them. However, in the end, Motorcycle Journeys Through the Alps is flawed, but better than nothing...

This is one book you can't be without if you plan on doing any riding in the Alps. It makes you want to sell everything and move to Europe! Great detail and route maps.

I do like this book but two of these lessons were in other Walter Foster books I already had. Spring is just around the corner and has me thinking of flowers so I'm looking forward to trying out the lessons in this book

I especially enjoyed the detailed lessons by the 5 artists. My favorite section was by Jim Sulkowski. Good instruction.

There is not much new información, I was hoping for more painting techniques.

Well done step-by-step teaching, always looking for new techniques! Thanks Walter Foster

I'm just getting into the book and excited into getting into it. It looks very good to me.

For a student with low reading level they now don't have to skip higher math! My dyslexic daughter gets math but her low reading level stood in the way of being successful with most math programs. This is the most clear and simple presentation of Algebra I have ever seen and I have been a teacher for 18 years! It presents and organizes the vocabulary at the beginning of every chapter. It doesn't just give you the steps to perform but helps you understand why those steps solve the problem. She started Algebra in the Abecka book and was doing good although it took a long time to get through. When we switched over I had her review the chapters she had already done. She had done well (every grade over 85 and some 100s) But she redid the chapters because the vocabulary was so much clearer and her comment was with the old program she knew what to do but now she understands why to do it and because she understands she is not skipping any steps anymore. She is now making all A s and is moving through the book at twice the speed. It is so good to see her confidence grow because she gets it. We bought all pacemaker subjects for next year It has been hard watching her fall further behind in other areas due to her reading but now she can be successful even though her dyslexia seriously limits her reading level.

It looks like a thorough review of basic Algebra 1 skills. However, I do not like how there is NO key. That is why I must mark down.

Been using this textbook for years with my students. Great step by step guides on how to solve the equations. Could use more practice problems, but you can just look for what you are needing specifically on line.

Love it. gives clear instruction and examples

Just like their Basic Math and Pre- Algebra texts, this book builds on prior learning one concept at a time. The series is so well presented a student could probably use it to learn with little or no teacher support.

they can do a better job of explaining concepts they tend to skip a step or two without showing it and that has thrown my daughter off several times

Excellent Condition! Thank you!

decent review of concepts
