About the Author

Mark A. Snell, PhD, is the director of the George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War and professor of history at Shepherd University, Shepherdstown, West Virginia. He is a retired U.S. Army officer and a former assistant professor at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York. Mark has written or edited several books about the Civil War, including From First to Last: The Life of Major General William B. Franklin (Fordham University Press, 2002). His most recent publication is about the U.S. involvement in World War I and is titled Unknown Soldiers: The American Expeditionary Forces in Memory and Remembrance (Kent State University Press, 2008). During the fall semester of 2008, Mark served as visiting senior lecturer of war studies at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom. In February 2009, he was given the Honorary West Virginian Award by Governor Joe Manchin, the highest individual honor the governor can bestow on someone who is not a West Virginia citizen.

A somewhat dry yet detailed telling of the role played by West Virginia, and more precisely West Virginians, in the American Civil War. Perhaps a more accurate title for this book would have been "West Virginians in the Civil War." Not much attention is given to the material conditions that led to the formation of West Virginia: there were a half-million slaves in Virginia, but only 18,000 in the mountainous western region. It's no coincidence that armed opposition to the Confederates arose in the mountains of West Virginia, western North Carolina and east Tennessee and the Tallahoma Swamps in Mississippi. The role that the fight over chattel slavery played in the Civil War is downplayed in this book as is fashionable today. The author tries too much to be objective. That is as inappropriate in this case as it would be in a book on the Jewish resistance in German-occupied Europe. The book closes around the words, "Other than ... the emancipation of an enslaved race of people, there is little to celebrate about the bloodiest war in the nation's history." What other than the emancipation of humanity could be a more worthy achievement? The Confederacy was on the wrong side of history. The tragedy is that Reconstruction was not carried through to completion to uproot and eliminate the vestiges of the southern slaveocracy. Since it wasn't, as Snell writes on page 187, “The Ku Klux Klan made its presence known in West Virginia as well, especially in counties that had been strongholds of secession and Confederate support.” Read Loyal West Virginia by Theodore Lang. I have found this book to be most intriguing. The author does a good job of blending multiple narratives into one readable book of a reasonable size; touching on the development of West Virginia statehood, the local units which served in the war, and the battles fought in the area. All while bringing out the human interest side of the war.In my mind, the most useful aspect of this book is that it is a singular book detailing the battles which occurred within the state. My family and I like to travel to the battlefields and prior to discovering this book we had a mismatch of books and pdfs to provide a narrative. I appreciate the work done here.

Excellent research into both Union and Confederates from West Virginia activities in the Civil War. Highly recommended.

I have read a lot about the Civil War. Being from WV, it was refreshing to see the war approached from the point of view of the formation of the state, the units on both sides and the battles.

This book delves into the actions of various WV units in the Civil War as well as West Virginians serving in the Confederacy. The book was enlighting and interesting, but there was one thing that bothered me. One of the WV units that was involved to a great extent in the war was only mentioned in passing one time. The WV 6th Infantry was very active and deserved at least a passing reference.

Very interesting. A little known chapter in the Civil War. How and why West Virginia was formed. A real brother against brother part of the Civil War.

This book is an awesome start to a new series. I loved the banter and the off the wall thoughts that the characters had. I had a huge smile after finishing the book and can’t wait for Trace’s.

A new-to-me author, I’m always on the lookout for new sports romances (a favorite genre), so with an amusing blurb, I decided to give this a try.The author has a fun and lighthearted style, with the characters occasionally talking directly to the reader in a break-the-fourth-wall kind of approach. It not only made me laugh and helped to keep me engaged, but it also worked well with the cute concept of a very analytical match-making service matching up two people who already knew other and didn’t consider the other a possibility.In fact, Fernando and Erica had close to a love-hate kind of relationship as the player and the pr rep, so it was fun watching them take a chance, only to find out there was more to the other than was showing on the surface. Plus having a third person outside of the relationship defending the match added a lot for me.Of course, it wasn’t all great pr and scoring goals; in spite of their obvious chemistry, they had several obstacles to get over, including trust issues. Then there were the protective twin brother and the team owner’s vindictive ex-wife, just two of some great secondary characters helping to round out the book. Some of the plot was a little predictable, but it didn’t really detract from the story for me, and there were a couple of little twists as well.Funny and generally lighthearted with a few deeper moments, this was a quick and entertaining read, and I’ll certainly be keeping my eyes open for more from this author. 4 starsB2B Kelly

So, when his teammate decides to sign him up, Fernando Fuerte never imagined his perfect match would be the one woman that hated him. However, the more time he and Erica spend together, the more they find things aren't always what they seem. Will Fernando be able to convince Erica to give him a chance or will Fernando's past transgressions cause Erica to walk away?What a fun and very entertaining read Ms. Stewart has delivered in this first book of her Mr. Match series where the dialogue was compelling from start to finish due to the main characters back stories and their banter, which was a mixture of intense and playful moments; and the main characters were fascinating and had me loving their back stories and their journey to happy ever after, as it felt like these two would never get things right. Is it really hard for the pair to trust the one they're with?The way this story started had me wanting to know more about Mr. Match and how it's so successful in matching couples. What is the secret to the site's success? Are Erica and Fernando truly meant for each other, considering how much Erica dislikes Fernando since he's a total player? However, it was from the moment the hero and heroine come face-to-face for the first time where this story really gets interesting, as Fernando isn't the smoothest guy when Erica is around. Something his friends aren't afraid to point out the moment the heroine enters the story, which had me amused.With the main characters, I absolutely loved this pair together, as they start off as enemies, but Erica soon finds her opinion of Fernando changing, as she helps him deal with things that are going on in his life with his mother and with someone trying to cause problems for him. Will Erica be able to help Fernando? I also liked the close friendship the heroine has with her best friend and her brother. Since she and her brother have only had each other while the heroine's best friend is always offering advice and helping her out. While the hero, he and his mom are extremely close and I couldn't help but sympathize with him because of the thought that he might lose her. I also liked how determined the hero was to win the heroine over, especially since they've both judged each other wrong. Yes, women throw themselves at him because he's a big name in soccer. Yet, Erica's different. She likes him for him and not the big name soccer player he is.Overall, Ms. Stewart has delivered a really good read in this book, which has me looking forward to more books of this series; and where the chemistry between Erica and Fernando was strong; the romance was full of heat and passion; and the ending had me loving how this couple are reunited after their relationship goes awry. Really, loving someone goes a long way to earning forgiveness, especially when one of them realizes they were in the wrong. However, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up nicely, as the hero's mom is so demanding and funny. I would recommend Scoring the Keeper's Sister by Delancey Stewart, if you enjoy the enemy to lovers trope, the matchmaking trope or books by authors Cindi Madsen, Jen Doyle, Jamie Howard and Sarah Robinson.

I really like the content of this book. Somewhere I have a copy of an earlier edition (from the '70s/'80s). I was excited to see that it was available in the Kindle edition.However, they were very LAZY about creating the edition. They included 2 pages face up, would wouldn't be too bad on my 30" computer monitor. However, this kindle version isn't available to download on PCs. That leaves my 5" Android smart phone. 2 pages is just laughable. You can see that something is there, but no details. Supposedly, you can tap & expand the picture, but that's only for one of the book's physical pages. Then there's my 7" Kindle Fire. Even there, the screen size is too small to see the drawings clearly, which is why I bought it.To make matters worse, the dictionary isn't even searchable! Isn't that one reason why we buy electronic books? Since the signs are grouped by topic (a good choice), you have to go to the index to find the word you want, then try to guess which page you might find it on by the Kindle "Location #" (out of 182, when there are 340 pages).To take an example, let's say I want to know the sign for Permit. I got to the index in the back and scroll to find the right word in the index (location 180). Then, I need to go to page 128. There are links to the correct page, but with the size of the words in the index, can I really get the word I want? (Answer: Sometimes yes, other times no.) If the link doesn't work, then I need to use a scroll bar to get to Location 66. (There's no Go To option to type in the location.)All in all, the Kindle version is HORRIBLE!

She has used this book countless times and even gave a small demo on the signs used for various animals to a group of her peers. This is a must have when learning and a great reference point when you need it.

i bought this for my youth minister at church. he works with the kids a lot and i thought he might find it useful!!! i have one too and i used it a lot when i was teaching at a montessori school a few years ago. it is a great book. i guess sometime i should update and get a newer one but this one is so easy to use. i had my students learn several songs in sign language they loved it.

I have taught sign language and deaf culture for over 35 years plus interpreted for the deaf and I have observed that many ppl find this book the easiest introduction to sign. Lest someone jump on this, I don't pretend to do ASL, but rather use PSE and prefer it. I am hard of hearing myself. Love this book. Kinda wish there would come a new edition soon.

I am happy with the content as I am able to find the words and instruction are easy to follow but the image and word are not adjustable and it is hard to read. I am using a Samsung tab3 10'. I would not want to image viewing this on my son's 7' tablet,I am sure it will bend hard to read or recognize information.

The kindle version of this book is small printed unlike all the other kindle books I have. I find it difficult to read and will have to end up buying the hard copy instead.

It was a used book and it was in good condition and I will be able to use it to refresh my signing

This kindle edition is impossible to read. It is all so tiny. I have the book but wanted the kindle edition for easy access. I have other signing books on kindle that are easy to read but not as complete as the Joy of Signing. I would like a refund unless you can correct the copy into something readable.

One of my favorite books of all time. Whether you're a student or professional theatre practitioner, this one belongs on your shelf. Was the required text for one of my undergrad directing classes, but just picked up this copy for a friend/colleague of mine and he nearly cried when he opened it. I would recommend this book for any artist, as it has encouraging and inspiring insights on creating theatre which could translate to other art forms.

I loved reading Anne Bogart's work. It is engaging and she has some wonderful insights. Great for directors and those working with actors. This was assigned for my directing course at university and I am very glad it was -A Director Prepares will hold a special place on my book shelf.

Helpful tool when directing. As always, take what you like, leave the rest.

The language Bogart uses is full of quotes and anecdotes. It feels like you have to read through 4 pages to get a paragraph's worth of content. It's unnecessarily wordy and patronizing. The few meaningful sections were very good, but it was too much of a slog to pick them out from the rest.
