For those who have read the Bilbury series of books by Mr Coleman - I would caution you not to expect the same kind of writing with the diaries that he produces. These diaries are more the musings of a man who sees the idiocy of the world we live in today and how our own countries culture is being eroded at every turn. The diaries make you think and should make you dig deeper into what you think you know about the world. Too many are quick to dismiss these types of books, and whilst you may not agree with everything or anything he writes, you should always be open minded enough to wonder and fact check for yourself. If you do this you may find yourself thinking a little harder about what you think you know. He may not have all the answers, but he has a lot of them and it makes for very interesting reading. I highly recommend all his books, they are all well written and for those of us who love England, they resonate and are important reading.

Mr.Coleman has written an interesting diary.Do I agree with him completely ? no,but I enjoy his crankiness.His writing is always thought provoking and fun.Keep it up Mr. Coleman.P.S. I am an American,cattle rancher and dog lover,which Mr.Coleman rails against I still love his writing.

I have read a number of Vernon Coleman's books and enjoyed getting to know him in a personal way through this diary. He is amazingly smart and interesting and knowledgeable on so many topics. Warning: he is addicting!

l enjoyed the Bilbury Pie books but not this

Very enjoyable diary (the first in a three-part series), with insights into Dr. Colemans passions (good and bad). Wish there were more

The author is a bitter man who is at a cranky stage of his life where he is on a soapboxproclaiming hatred of the way things are in this modern world. He detests both British andAmerican current governments in near equal balance, and attempts to look at both using asense of humor (humour) which is fun at first, but than drags on unerringly making the booktedious to read. There are passages that I did roar with laughter on reading, but overall I keptthinking to myself that life is far too short to not step back and try to ENJOY our golden years.

This was an unfortunate book. It is totally a "gripe session" for this nice guy, and I wonder why he wrote and published it... I couldn't finish it. Sorry....

I was hoping this book would be similar to his stories about Bilbury- just some good, clean escapism. Unfortunately, he just complains endlessly about the modern world. I couldn't finish reading this book

Okay, I'll admit I haven't read this book yet, but I have ordered it and will add to this review soon once I have completed it. I simply want to say - don't NOT buy it because of Alexandra Fuller's review in the NYT. She rips it apart and incorrectly states that "water buffaloes and cheetahs don't exist in nature together" - another inaccuracy about the Africa that Fuller claims to know so well, and yet which she mischaracterizes in several of her books. (I was born and lived in South Africa, and spent two years in Zimbabwe, so I have first-hand knowledge of that period of time in those countries. She doesn't even get the date of the Civil War correct in her own memoir. Scribbling the Cat feels like a work of imagination.) I would certainly recommend Fuller's Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight - it is beautifully written, seems emotionally true, and is more or less accurate about Rhodesia at that time - but her memoirs mostly contain inaccuracies far more egregious than any contained in Houston's, I am willing to guess. I find it astonishing that she can be so critical of Pam Houston under the circumstances.

Pam Houston’s book, Deep Creek, Finding Hope in the High Country, arrived, and I started reading and couldn’t stop. Though it includes a traumatic childhood, it’s a celebration of nature and survival.What surprised me though is that when she asked her class at UC Davis how many had spent a night sleeping in the wilderness, the answer was zero. Zero.I wondered what is it to lose contact with the land, the earth, to not see the full passage and shades of light, day to night, night to day. Ms. Houston gives us this passage through her observations and journeys. We share and feel the ups and down, fires and cold, and the beauty of love and connection shared. I felt my muscles, both physical and spiritual, firm as I hiked and traveled with her and shared the beauty of this earth.In 1971, Captain Edgar J. Mitchell, the sixth man to walk on the moon, was changed by seeing the earth from space. He felt the love we share, a universal love, what he called “quantum resonance with all that is”.We may not be able to spend a night in the wilderness but through Pam’s book we get a taste of seeing the earth in her wholeness and we even experience a belief in ghosts.

As is her bent toward humor and emotional depth, Pam has given a achingly beautiful portrayal of the meaning of place and home as an anchor for one who spends half her life traveling to distant places. Yes, I believe this place claimed Pam when she was searching for a home. Her descriptions of the landscape, the daily rituals of caring for and being blessed by the people and natural wonder of this place make me want to go slow in the reading to make the gift of her offering last.

I highly recommend Deep Creek. Pam Houston's latest book is a journey through a lifetime of courage and contrast. Of the fire of a father and the ice of a mother. Of hovering like a kingfisher over an exceptionally violent past, diving straight into its turbulent waters, and shaking it off and choosing to forage elsewhere. It's a book of godmothers, in the form of nannies, safe sleepovers, impossible down payments and the hundreds of narwhals. Of straddling the yawning chasm between grieving our battered Mother Earth and celebrating Her. Pam is a person who looks straight into the eyes of wolfhounds and students and storms and sees such undeniable grace she's knocked to her knees, taking us all with her. The stories in Deep Creek are motivated by generosity and fueled by gratitude; in the end, it's a book about alchemy, about using the shards of heartbreak to carve a bigger vessel to hold more love. Please do yourself a favor. Read this book and pass it on. We will all be better off.

This author was new to me when I came upon the book. I'm so glad I happened upon it as it was very well written and engaging. The author had a tough childhood and is searching for her place in the world when she comes upon a small town in Colorado and a ranch that speaks to her. While it isn't "about" animals, the animals of her world inhabit all the pages. It is an honest, refreshing story of one person's search for their true life.

I have always loved Pam Houston's books. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and was envious of the life she is living. I enjoyed it so much I went back and ordered "Cowboys Are My Weakness" (had read it many years ago) and re-read it. I think it should be required reading for any female over the age of 16. In fact, both of them should. There is much to learn about life choices in both.

The "Spearfishing Manual" by Mike McGuire is well written and full of useful information on how to spear a fish. The book is organized extremely well. There are pictures and diagrams that enhance McGuire's book. As a former lifeguard, I really appreciated the section explaining how to keep fit in the water. McGuire explains that this is something a spear fisherman must do. While this book informs you on the many places to spearfish, including fresh water, I was really pleased what McGuire said about the ocean. He says "The real beauty of the sea will open itself to your full appreciation..." (p. 62). I believe this manual will open itself up to your full appreciation of spearfishing. I highly recommend it. The easy to read style of this book makes it the best one to get in order for you to know more about this sport.

He includes valuable information on preparedness through exercise and conditioning, to safety tips for when one becomes disoriented underwater. He also offers insight on how to safely get that blue water tuna, marlin or Spanish mackerel.Perhaps the best instructions in this book are the chapters devoted to techniques and equipment. He explains in detail the types of guns, tips and spears used in the sport, as well as the essential diving equipment. McGuire even devotes an entire section to covering various hot locations around the globe where you can spearfish and have an incredible experience!This book will open doors to a whole new world of adventure for you if you love diving and fishing. A must read for any outdoor adventurous types!

This authoritative book deserves more than the 5 star maximum that Amazon allows.Mike McGuire has been spear fishing all his life and has shared his experience with us to create a manual of great use to people who are taking up this sport, but also to people like me who have never speared a fish, but are passionately interested in diving and in fish.This book emphasizes safety, and I would urge any prospective spear fisher to read and carefully follow Mike's advice on safety.Mike covers fitness in great detail, including useful exercises to improve your fitness. He also gives his ideas about equipment.This is a book I recommend to anyone contemplating spear fishing or any type of serious diving.As Mike says, spear fishing has been done for thousands of years. At first this would have been a way of getting food, but as with many human activities it has developed into a sport. The book caused me to consider who the first spear fishers were. Although I referred to spear fishing as a human activity, the first spear fishers were almost certainly not human. Bonobos, a type of ape, will catch fish with their hands and have been observed to make and use very primitive spears. The first spear fishers were almost certainly an earlier near human creature.

I bought this book hoping it would give me some insight into the sport of spearfishing, of which, I knew virtually nothing. My older brother is Mr. Scuba and lives for time beneath the waves. He often talks of his underwater adventures, including spearfishing, and I wanted to up my game so we could have a rational discussion. Thankfully, Mr. McGuire’s book lifted my understanding to a level that I’m both intrigued and determined to give this a try. I am a proficient swimmer and snorkeler, but not a scuba diver. I initially thought this would preclude me from trying my hand at spearfishing; however, I was thrilled to learn it did not.I appreciated the step-by-step method of building from one aspect of the sport to the next. Some of my greatest apprehensions and fears were dealt with in a straightforward, logical manner...even the prospect of sharks. The writer of this guide exceeded my expectations in regards to writing style, editing, and overall presentation. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised at the professional nature of the book. I would recommend this to anyone who is contemplating giving spearfishing a try. The manual is concise, leaving no stone unturned and no question unanswered. It’s an easy read, but packed with vital information and some helpful links.

The book is well-researched and packed with solid information. I would like to encourage others with my own story. In the past two years I have gradually increased my iodine intake. Since beginning the iodine (very low dose), I have lost 17-20 pounds without dieting a single day, and it has stayed off (even during the holidays). With each iodine increase, my energy has increased. In the past two weeks I have started using Lugol's 2% (only one drop a day which I think experts would consider a teeny amount). I gave no thought to seeing any changes, so after doing several extra nonessential chores for 3-4 days I realized Hey, it has to be the iodine increase. If my energy is really low, it causes a minor case of the blues. With the recent increase I am feeling even more uplifted all through the day. I tried two drops yesterday which upset my stomach (I then drank a second big glass of water which did the trick), my face became flushed, my scalp itched for a couple of minutes, and an itchy hive broke out on my neck. However, none of this was a problem--other than my concern that it might get worse--and it all lasted less than five minutes. I went back into the book and read that taking the iodine with food on the stomach usually solves the upset stomach. Some say taking it early is best as late-day doses can keep one awake. For years I felt like a deflated balloon all day long. Everything I accomplished was only through a very hard push. Now I feel like I'm up out of the grave, and I am eager to experience more improvements as I continue to increase the dosage.

And for 30 years I would throw up my hands and say "We just don't know".After I retired from radiology and returned to clinical medicine in 2004, I attended medical meetings and there was David Brownstein MD and George Flechas MD addressing the doctor audience about the Iodine project and the health benefits of Iodine supplementation. Iodine is the answer to fibrocystic breast disease. Iodine is the answer for breast cancer prevention. Iodine is the answer I should have been giving to all the women over the years I worked in the hospital X-ray department, but didn't. So I am making up for it now. This book changed my life. I just found out that I have had a low acting thyroid. I tried iodine therapy with a low dose supplement but got little results. After reading this book I decided to try the iodine loading. I did not clear this with my nutritionist , but I knew I had an issue with the thyroid and that iodine was a treatment. I did the 50mg loading. As of this date I'm two months into it. My body temperature has gone up 2 degrees. I was very low .. about 95.5 in the morning. last check I was up to 97.2. Still low but going up. My body fat is beginning to burn, my vision has cleared up, my skin looks amazing and I have more energy.I recommend this book to anyone really. The lack of iodine in our food in the US needs to be remedied.

A well-written overview of some of the main supposedly insoluble problems of our age, from climate change, deteriorating infrastructure, wasteful medical expenditures, and dysfunctional financial system, with suggestions for helping to solve them by investing in a very old fashioned way (paying attention to underlying value, rather than smoke and mirrors or temporary advantage), using a relatively new vehicle--exchange traded index funds. The authors make a convincing case that you can make reasonable profits--i.e., do well, by making these socially useful investments--i.e., by doing good. A real eye-opener.

As a practicing physician I have always felt I lack an understanding of the business of medicine. I have been trying to find ways to use some of my medical knowledge to help with my investments and help me diversify. I have always been afraid to risk it all on individual companies. The authors' overview and easy to understand explanations have give me the valuable insight in how to test the waters with a relatively safe and potentially profitable model. With their concise explanation of EFT's I have a much better understanding of how to get involved in an area that I is such a major focus of my personal life. I highly recommend this book for novices to those that have much experience in the world of investing.

As someone in the non-profit sector with limited free time to focus on my personal investments, I found this to be a great overview and introduction to using ETFs. This will be a great resource for me moving forward as I take more control of my investments. Three Paths is well-written, consise, easy to understand, and extremely helpful. I highly reccomend checking it out if you are interested in learning about this great investment tool.
