Golf Annika's Way: How I Elevated My Game to Be the Best-- and How You Can Too, by Annika Sorenstam

From Booklist

Its title echoing the enduring how-to guide Golf My Way by Jack Nicklaus (1974), this instructional from Sorenstam is technically orthodox. Perhaps its prime attraction, besides the author's fame and telegenic smile, will be Sorenstam's allusions to deficiencies in her swing that she remedied en route to becoming professional golf's top female player of the past decade. She reports that in early days on tour she was unable to drive the ball far, three-putted too often, and was nervous about bunker shots. Her solutions to these common problems were to delay the uncocking of the wrists on the downswing; putt to the high side of the cup; and in the bunker, assess the lie and set up correctly--all standard-issue counsel. But if it works for Annika, why not for me, thinks the ever-optimistic weekend player, and Sorenstam's I'm-like-you attitude infuses an entirely friendly and comprehensible presentation of how to play golf. Photographic presentations of Sorenstam practicing exercising combine with asides about her personal life to create a popular golf book-- guaranteed. This is an excellent golf lesson book and I love it. It is also Annika Sorenstam's short autobiography. It introduced how she played golf and why she won LPGA tournaments so many times to golf beginners and experienced golfers as well. Compared with Jack Nicklaus's or Tom Watson's lesson books, this book is at least "par" and maybe "birdie". Her explanations about how to swing and how to handle all golf clubs are natural and pleasant. They are valuable, too. I am a man, and her lessons transcend gender. I learned from her something that I didn't learn from male golfers in the same way as she said that she learned a lot from male golfers. This Swedish woman is a true achiever and can become your good friend. Buy this book and keep it near you. It will improve your golf game, I guarantee.

This book was absolutely amazing! It is extremely helpful with all parts of the game and the golf swing technique. I got this book as a gift and it was perfect because if you want the best advice, why not get it from the best.... Annika. Annika keeps it very informative and educational, yet simple, and yet very easy to follow and effective. It has already helped me improve just in a few weeks I have seen a big difference. In addition it was really fun to read about Annika and her golf and life experiences and her mental approach to the game. She was such a great player and extremely driven and focused and willing to sacrifice and worked her rear end off to be her best. But she also seems like such a great person. Just a very nice, fun, laid back, down to earth, good sense of humor type of person. Really enjoyed this book!

Positive, well illustrated book. A lot of excellent info. I checked it out at the local library, but we refer to it so much that I bought it on Amazon. Originally checked it out for my daughter, but I read it, too. Golf isn't a separate men or women specific sport. Annika has instruction, drills and tips that wil help anyone. There is a little autobiography in the beginning of the book. My daughter, who knew very little about Annika before, has become a fan after reading her story. This section lends credibility to her teachings from my young daughters viewpoint.I have a huge library of golf literature and dvd instruction, and this book is one of my top three favorites. Annika is one of the best golfers of all time, but she is humble and practical in her teaching apporoach.

Came in on time, looked like it was brand new. I gave it as a gift to a girl named annika who plays golf and she loved it.

I was looking for god golf instruction and this is more of a biography. The instructional parts are pretty basic.

I feel this is excellent book really gives u idea how to work on ur game

like new condition. happy with purchase

I am a senior male golfer and found this book to be much more informative than those written for guys that can pound out the ball 300 yards. I still have not mastered Annika's ability to move her eyes to follow the ball after contact.

Dear Miss Breed: True Stories of the Japanese American Incarceration During World War II and a Librarian Who Made a Difference, by Joanne Oppenheim

From School Library Journal

Grade 6 Up–Through letters and recollections, Oppenheim relates the story of a group of young people who were interned during World War II. Breed had come to know many Japanese Americans through her work as the childrens librarian at the San Diego Public Library. When the young people were sent to camps in 1942, she began sending letters and care packages of books, candy, and other treats to her children. She also wrote articles for Library Journal and The Horn Book that articulated their plight. In return, the recipients expressed their gratitude in letters. While their lives were marked by deprivation and uncertainty, their letters reveal an unquenchable optimism. Their story, along with that of Miss Breed, is both remarkable and inspiring, and Oppenheim has done a fine job of assembling these poignant eyewitness accounts. Unfortunately, she muddles her assessment, ladling on a variety of unnecessary details and her own anecdotal experiences. Theres a lack of clarity and focus, and though this is a welcome addition to this topic, its appeal will be limited to those familiar with it. Readers seeking a concise, overall perspective would fare better with Michael L. Coopers Fighting for Honor: Japanese Americans and World War II (2000) and Remembering Manzanar: Life In a Japanese Relocation Camp (2002, both Clarion).–Marilyn Taniguchi, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

*Starred Review* Gr. 7-10. Like Michael O. Tunnell's The Children of Topaz (1996), this passionately written history bears witness to the World War II injustices endured by Japanese Americans, from a vantage point of particular relevance to young people. In a poignant introduction, seasoned children's writer Oppenheim explains how her hunt for a former classmate, a Japanese American, serendipitously led her to an Internet profile of San Diego children's librarian Clara Breed, and to a collection of letters written to Breed by her incarcerated Japanese patrons--grateful, illuminating responses to Breed's faithful missives and care packages containing books and other gifts. Although the letters (and interviews with their grown-up authors) form the narrative's bedrock, Oppenheim weaves them into a broader account, amplified by photos, archival materials (including a startlingly racist cartoon by Dr. Seuss), and moving quotations from the later reparation hearings: "I was just 10 years old when I became a 'squint-eyed yellow-bellied Jap.'" Along with the basic facts, Oppenheim urges readers to critically interpret primary sources and identify "governmental doublespeak"; the words "incarceration" or "concentration" are consciously employed here as correctives for softpedaling terminology like "internment" and "relocation." Unclear references in the children's letters are not always annotated, and the recurring discussion of professional concerns facing Breed (whose own letters to the camps have been lost) often seems to cater too obviously to Oppenheim's adult readers. But the aggregate deserves commendation for its sheer quantity of accessible, exhaustively researched information about a troubling period, more resonant now than ever, when American ideals were compromised by fear and unfortunate racial assumptions. Eight pages of unusually readable, wide-ranging endnotes and an exhaustive bibliography conclude, evidence of Oppenheim's all-consuming research process. This book describes in detail the horrors Japanese American citizens encountered after the bombing of Pearl Harbor simply because they were of Japanese ancestry. The letters to Miss Breed from the interned Japanese children, who had known her through the library, and her many acts of kindness towards them while they were in the concentration camps, is very inspiring and heartbreaking. This book is a must read for persons who want to have a better understanding of the injustices faced by innocent Japanese American citizens and how one brave woman made a difference in the lives of many children.

Joanne Oppenheim has created a masterpiece of writing and research. This book should be a must-have for anyone interested in this time period in history, social studies, and just plain human drama and courage. I really love the way she weaves together personal stories and regional and national events. It is a great way to show how great events have a personal side which is rich and complex, not the abbreviated, often cartoon-slogan way we get history in school. This is not a dis against the "nutshell" version of history that must be done in order to get through all of it in a school year, but it is vital that resources like this survive so that the more detailed realities will be known and remembered. Thank you Joanne. This is a great book and great writing.

My wife and I both loved the book. It is a wonderful book and Joanne Oppenheim is an outstanding writer. The book should be ready by every adult in this country - especially the people that run this country. There are so many times that we have fallen far from the principles upon which this country was established. The book describes our treatment of the Japanese Americans during the second World War. There are many other similar examples: the practice of slavery, the way we destroyed the indigenous people that were here first, the prejudice against Jews and Blacks...the examples go on and on...

I'm in the process of reading this & am loving the stories, letters, pictures, so much so that I gave the book as a gift to someone who just graduated from her Master's to be a librarian.

I absolutely loved this book. Miss Breed was an incredible woman and an inspiration in a time of great injustice. She is someone I would like to have known personally. I could not put this book down until I had read it from cover to cover, and I will read it again. Kudos to Joanne Oppenheimer for telling Miss Breed's story.

Love this book. I use in the classroom often when teaching about the Japanese internment camps.

I read this book while on vacation to the Eastern Sierras - we visited Manzanar one of the internment camps - since I have grown up in San Diego it the memories were even more meaningful. What a wonderful woman!

This book is outstanding! I shows the kindness of one librarian to Japanese children who were shipped to Internment Camps.

“Superb....A great American writer speaks with his own voice about matters that still resonate at the center of our lives.” (Alfred Kazin, New York Times Book Review on Black Boy)

From the Back Cover

Richard Wright grew up in the woods of Mississippi amid poverty, hunger, fear, and hatred. He lied, stole, and raged at those around him; at six he was a "drunkard," hanging about in taverns. Surly, brutal, cold, suspicious, and self-pitying, he was surrounded on one side by whites who were either indifferent to him, pitying, or cruel, and on the other by blacks who resented anyone trying to rise above the common lot. Black Boy is Richard Wright's powerful account of his journey from innocence to experience in the Jim Crow South. It is at once an unashamed confession and a profound indictment—a poignant and disturbing record of social injustice and human suffering.

If you are a white person who cannot understand why athletes are taking a knee, this is a book for you. As a white person who grew up in the SF Bay Area I value autobiographical material such as "Black Boy" so that I can experience racial discrimination second-hand. If you read this book you will appreciate to some degree what Malcolm X meant when he told a black audience "We didn't land on Plymouth Rock. Plymouth Rock was landed on us!" (The book also contains insights into the workings of the Communist Party in Chicago in the early 1900's).

The reality of post-Reconstruction life is brilliantly depicted in Richard Wright’s memoir Black Boy, with Wright showing the mortal dangers faced by African-Americans and the daily struggles in a society designed to oppress and marginalize; in essence, a hardscrabble reality. Wright’s own personal struggle to find identity and success serve as a microcosm for African-Americans of this period, and sadly, even today. This struggle is reflected in Wright’s continuous questioning of life’s inequalities and injustices and ironically, by people around him questioning why he asks so many questions. This theme is epitomized when Wright’s grandmother tells him, “Quit asking questions and do what you are told” (142). As the novel progresses, Wright does neither, discovering the reality of life in the Jim Crow South and struggling to cope with it.           The word hardscrabble seems to fit Wright’s life with its definition, “getting a meager living from poor soil” (“Hardscrabble”). Here, the poor soil symbolizes the Jim Crow South. The Jim Crow laws, written and unwritten restrict African-Americans, hampering any progress in education, social, and employment opportunities. Wright experiences this repeatedly, questioning why it is and why it has to remain.           Like most children, Wright begins questioning life at a young age. When his brother tells him he shouldn’t burn a broom, Wright questions him, ignoring the dangers. He repeatedly asks his mother about race, such as when he questions why his grandmother is white (confused by her biracial identity), or why she married a black man. Wright does not take long to learn that whites treat African-Americans differently and that African-Americans must defer to this or face consequences, usually violent.                      Richard Wright’s questioning nature is understood at the age of twelve when he realizes he has, “… a sense of the world that was mine and mine alone, a notion as to what life meant that no education could ever alter a conviction that the meaning of living only came when one was struggling to wring a meaning out of meaningless suffering” (100). However, many questions lie ahead and any answers he finds, are usually not easy. Wright seeks answers to these questions but he must do so while navigating a dangerous society where questions can be risky.           The independent Wright’s question make him a target of a society dedicated to disempowering African-Americans but it also makes him a target of his fellow African-Americans. “As the outside world grew more meaningful, I became more concerned, tense; and my classmates and teachers would say: ‘Why do you ask so many questions?’ or ‘Keep quiet’” (169). Various family members try to stifle his curiosity, often striking him when he asks too many questions.Wright’s fellow African-Americans see the dangers ahead for Wright due to his independent and questioning nature. Griggs warns Wright, “Your way of doing things is all right among our people, but not for white people. They won’t stand for it” (184). Wright’s way of doing things- making deliveries to white neighborhoods during the evening, forgetting to say sir to whites, and asking when he will learn a trade he was promised he was hired to learn, are just three instances where his blackness target him for unequal and dangerous treatment.           Wright not only questions how whites treat African-Americans but how some African-Americans put up with abuse. Working as a porter at a store that sells to African-Americans, Wright observes how they are overcharged for cheap merchandise and treated contemptuously by the store’s owner and staff. Wright cannot help but wonder, “No matter how often I witnessed it, I could not get used to it. How can they accept it? I asked myself” (179). Wright will not allow himself to become desensitized to injustice. This is seen again when Wright asks Shorty “How in God’s name can you do that?” (229) after Shorty encourages a white man to kick him for a quarter. Later, Wright wonders if justice is attainable. Wright’s genius and relentless questioning of injustice do not provide an easy path or easy answers. “But, as I listened to the Communist Negro speakers, I wondered if the Negro, blasted by three hundred years of oppression, could possibly cast off his fear and corruption and rise to the task” (298). Wright’s journey for truth seems to lead him to conclude that there will be no easy solution.           Questions can also be used as weapons as Wright shows when he employs questions to attack injustices he sees. Wright is only a child when he defends his decision to kill a cat at his father’s rhetorical request and when punished, asks, “Then why the hell did he tell me to do it?” (11). Wright seems to know he did wrong but questions his father’s authority with this question. Later, Wright uses a question to call out a Communist agitator about an erroneous prediction. “’What about that revolution you predicted if the bonus marchers were driven out?’ I asked” (296). Wright sees through Communism’s easy promises and realizes that people in general (not just African-Americans) are complacent in rising up against injustice. His question also shows his refusal to blindly follow someone.            Black Boy provides deep insight into living conditions in the Jim Crow South through Richard Wright’s non-stop questioning of economic, social, and political inequalities. Wright’s refusal to stop questioning things are a testament to his character but the answers he finds are a disturbing confirmation of the harsh reality of inhuman treatment suffered by African-Americans.  Â

I've known of Richard Wright for a long time. I partially read "Native Son" sometime in my teens but I never read any of his other works. I was brought to this book via another book: "Kafir Boy in America" by Mark Mathabane. In that book he describes how Richard Wright's "Black Boy" had a profound affect upon him; hence I decided to read "Black Boy"."Black Boy" is an autobiography and I think that that is why I found it so powerful. Just to read, first person, how it was to grow up as a Black male in the South during the 10's and 20's is riveting. I know, academically and cognitively that slavery existed as did the Jim Crow era--but to read first hand accounts of the physical, mental, economical, social and psychological torment that many Blacks faced--that's another thing entirely.Richard Wright writes openly about his family life and his extra-family life in Mississippi. He faced daily abuses from both, his near-fanatically religious family as well as the Whites he had to work for. But more than the physical and verbal abuses that Richard detailed, I found myself as much bothered by the transformation he had to make whenever confronting White people. He was not allowed to be a man and therefore act like one, he was always expected to be a boy. Even the job titles were "cleaning boy", "elevator boy", or just simply "boy for..." when they were hiring adults with families. Like a method actor, he would have to transmogrify into a slumped shouldered, downcast, foot-shuffling, speech deficient "boy". He could not stand up straight like a man, or look another in the eyes, or speak like a man, or even display any emotions beyond stupid gaiety, fear, or humility.I found out quickly that Richard was not constructed for that place or that era--that's why he journeyed North. Whereas other Black folks were able to seamlessly and automatically turn on the "Black Boy" act and compartmentalize that part of their life; Richard found himself hard pressed to do so--which was a problem because his life depended upon it.I was enthralled by the book. This particular copy has the addition of his life in Chicago which used to be printed as a separate book. Part two of this published edition deals with Richard as an adult in Chicago and being a part of the Communist Party. Although not as compelling, it was an interesting read into how the Communist Party could be so appealing to Blacks at that time. This book is a real page turner and a must read for a real historical reference to a dark era in American history.

This book is so inspiring and powerful! It's helped me over come years of PTSD I suffered as a child through the religion I was forced to be apart of. This book has truly changed my life!

EVERY woman MUST read this!!! So empowering! I've read it several times - it nourishes my soul. I would love to meet Ms. Cabot and thank her for writing it. She is so talented.

The word "Witch" holds negative connotations for most people. What Lauri Cabot does in "The Witch in Every Woman" is to help women understand why those negative connotations infringe on what it means to be woman.I found the book to be conversational in tone, and could feel the author's desire to impart her wisdom to women in hopes of improving their lives. She is not dogmatic, and does not preach. She retells ancient Celtic myths and demystifies them, helping women (and men if they so choose) to apply them in their daily lives. There are meditations and rituals that can be used at the end of each chapter. I learned so much from this book, and have used it as a starting point for studying. She brings up many subjects that can be researched for a more in depth discovery. If you are a woman who is fed up with the way that women are viewed and treated in our society, who longs to feel powerful, who yearns to create magic and to embrace ritual in her life, this book is for you!

Great condition, great book!

My first Lauri Cabot book and I will read more by this author. This is a very empowering book for women and I recommend it for every woman who is looking for that special someone she has inside herself.

Just started...

Awesome book for every woman seeking her inner magic light!

Ordered this for my cousin for Christmas, and gave it a read through first (she's 12 so I wanted to make sure it was appropriate - glad to say it is, in my opinion). Funny and cute book. :)

I AM SO PROUD OF MY MEME SONS

Dan and Phil put so much effort into this, and it really shows. Well done Dan and Phil, we love you.

MY SONS DID SO GOOD IM SO PROUD IVE ALREADY READ IT TWICE IT WAS BEAUTIFUL AND as you can see in my picture their instructions on how to draw the whiskers was very helpful BUT 10/10 THIS BOOK IS SO AMAZING IT WOULD MAKE KANYE WEST SMILE I RECCOMEND IT TO EVERYONE

I love these guys! This is the second YouTube book I've ever read (Hannah Hart's being the first) and I find that reading them makes me appreciate my most beloved YouTubers even more. As I write this, my copy of Tyler Oakley's new book just released and my pre-order shipped mere hours ago. I hope to read many more books written by YouTubers in the future to gain a better understanding and appreciation of who these entertainers are on a different level. Writing and releasing a book is such a very personal thing to do and I love imagining that one day I'll be admiring my book collection when I stumble upon these and reminisce on the good times I had laughing at people on the internet (SPOILER ALERT: not unlike the book's futuristic trailer).TABiNoF is truly exactly what anyone who considers themselves a Dan and Phil fan would expect it to be: Funny, charming, sarcastic, and bursting with inside jokes shared with anyone who has had the pleasure of enjoying their content. I was curious as to how two dominant personalities could come together to make one piece of literature and was pleasantly pleased to find that the story read much like a conversation between them would. There were quite a few times in which I caught myself hearing the words I was reading in their voices in my head. It was almost as if my brain went on autopilot and Dan and Phil started to steer (which I'm just now realizing is terrifying). Additionally, it wasn't until I read this book and found myself thinking "I already knew most of this about them" that I started to consider how truly invasive we are as an audience when it comes to our favorite online entertainers. Dan and Phil and others like them have pretty much forsaken all forms of privacy in order to distract us from our everyday lives. I expected the book to be a little more telling than the final product was when, in reality, it was more of a complete accumulation of everything that is "Dan and Phil." It is, essentially, their world in a book. By no means do I intend for that to sound like a negative comment, however I do think it is important for the reader to know that there isn't going to be much information in the book that isn't already known to the common subscriber. It is, nevertheless, fun and quirky and cute, just like they are.PS: I'm convinced Dan is the actual author for all of the embarrassing fanfictions I've read in the past few years. That was some seriously talented writing!

This book will make you laugh, smile, and possibly question your existence in the best way possible. Dan and Phil have truly crammed their lives into a single book, and it's amazing. (no pun intended) This book is perfect for anyone, and by the end, I felt like a good friend of theirs who had just finished a chat with them. It's nothing groundbreaking or mindblowing, but it is a heartwarming book that I couldn't put down until I finished it. Thank you Dan Howell and Phil Lester for an undeniably wonderful book.

I am using my dad's account to give this review because I don't have one of my own yet.My parents bought me this book for my birthday because I am a fan of Dan and Phil and asked them to and I would like to say that 'The Amazing Book Is Not On Fire' is, well, amazing! It's fun, colorful, and comedic, just like Dan and Phil's videos. It is also full of mixed emotions; Excitement, joy, love, sadness, and it may give you 'the feels'. They have you laughing one minute, saying 'What the?' the next, and towards the end you may feel a bit sad and like me have an existential crisis. Side note: Dan's fan fiction starts off a bit sad, but it has a somewhat happy ending. The only issue I had with it was trying to read Dan's dream diary, the writing was so small and cramped, and I can't read cursive all that well to begin with so I had to skip that page, but I would certainly recommend it to friends and family whether they're fans or not.

I purchased this book for my 19 year old daughter and she loves it. When she opened the gift, she literally screamed and fell of her chair saying, "How did you know that I wanted this? I did not tell you" I pay attention! She would not put that book down after opening it. We were trying to get her to eat and take pictures for her special day, and she forgot that we were even here. Her head was buried in that book. She read it several times and she still goes back to it. Wow! I did not expect that with this book. I have purchased a multitude of books for her, but there is something about this particular books that makes her blush. The packaging was on point.

It's Dan and Phil... I mean... you can't really go wrong.

I bought this because it was a requirement for my course. Even though, I was amazed by this book. You can call it a compilation of western literature (from early societies to medieval ones). It contains passages such as the Himm of Athen, to Edipo poems, and worldwide famous literature such as the Odysseus and more.

This Norton Anthology provided college student with necessary reading about the ancient culture and their literature styles. It is a hard subject matter because it is involved with literary terms where one have to deeply analyzed the concept of the theme. The best one of these are on Epic of Gilgamesh, Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, and possibly Dante's Inferno. These 4 are popular ones as well as well-known for those who love reading mythology and interesting biblical stories as college student. Warning: These required a lots of in-depth reading and analyzing the topic. Good Luck reading it.

Got charged for extension without being notified of expiration date. Will never rent from ecampus again. Do not recommend.

I have so many of these Norton anthologies as an English major, by now they blur together but all of them are interesting. I like these because they include author bios before most of the literature which helps in class discussions and when writing papers on the literature.

This books is in horrible condition! My college kid will have no choice but to use it as he is taking a minimester during the holidays. It is taped together!

I did what I had to do to get through World Lit. I ended up loving the great stories and history.

needed for school

The Arrival, by Shaun Tan

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. Grade 7 Up—Tan captures the displacement and awe with which immigrants respond to their new surroundings in this wordless graphic novel. It depicts the journey of one man, threatened by dark shapes that cast shadows on his family's life, to a new country. The only writing is in an invented alphabet, which creates the sensation immigrants must feel when they encounter a strange new language and way of life. A wide variety of ethnicities is represented in Tan's hyper-realistic style, and the sense of warmth and caring for others, regardless of race, age, or background, is present on nearly every page. Young readers will be fascinated by the strange new world the artist creates, complete with floating elevators and unusual creatures, but may not realize the depth of meaning or understand what the man's journey symbolizes. More sophisticated readers, however, will grasp the sense of strangeness and find themselves participating in the man's experiences. They will linger over the details in the beautiful sepia pictures and will likely pick up the book to pore over it again and again.—Alana Abbott, James Blackstone Memorial Library, Branford, CT Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

*Starred Review* Recipient of numerous awards and nominations in Australia, The Arrival proves a beautiful, compelling piece of art, in both content and form. Tan (The Lost Thing, 2004) has previously produced a small body of off-kilter, frequently haunting stories of children trapped in surreal industrial landscapes. Here, he has distilled his themes and aesthetic into a silent, fantastical masterpiece. A lone immigrant leaves his family and journeys to a new world, both bizarre and awesome, finding struggle and dehumanizing industry but also friendship and a new life. Tan infuses this simple, universal narrative with vibrant, resonating life through confident mastery of sequential art forms and conventions. Strong visual metaphors convey personal longing, political suppression, and totalitarian control; imaginative use of panel size and shape powerfully depicts sensations and ideas as diverse as interminable waiting, awe-inspiring majesty, and forlorn memories; delicate alterations in light and color saturate the pages with a sense of time and place. Soft brushstrokes and grand Art Deco–style architecture evoke a time long ago, but the story's immediacy and fantasy elements will appeal even to readers younger than the target audience, though they may miss many of the complexities. Filled with subtlety and grandeur, the book is a unique work that not only fulfills but also expands the potential of its form. Karp, Jesse

Even wonder what it's like to be an immigrant moving to a new place to look for work, to see and experience a whole new world? The Arrival will tell you the story of someone who made this journey. This beautiful book is designed like a worn out photo album from the past, not sure which past if the photo on the cover is anything of a hint. The book opens to a wall of immigrant photos, just like those you'll see in Ellis Island Museum. Several drawings of immigrant processing, passport pictures, and the "arrival hall" are based on photographs taken at Ellis Island. The story starts with a man putting a photo of his family carefully into his luggage. It's early morning. His wife and daughter are walking him to the train station. The scene cuts to show the town he's leaving from, one that's inhabited by gigantic black tentacles. At the train station, you can see the sadness in the eyes of her daughter, who only manages to break into a sad smile when her dad pulls a paper crane from under his hat to cheer her up. They hug and bid farewell. The train leaves. The mother and girl then walk back home under the shadows of the tentacles. You can tell the tremendous amount of research and thought put in the panels. Shaun Tan has put little nuances and details everywhere, enabling readers to fully immerse themselves in the new world feeling the sense of wonder and foreignness as a new immigrant might. When the man is in the arrival hall of the immigration building, he undergoes the health checkups, questioning by officers on the purpose of his visit before he's approved entry. He finds his job, made new friends and we learn their stories and more of this strange world. The last act ends happily with the man inviting his wife and daughter over. Seeing the joy on their faces as they reunite is so touching. In the last panel, the girl is pointing directions for a newcomer who's lost.My short review just barely scratches the depth of the book. It's really much deeper. This is storytelling at its best. Every panel advances the story. No words are used, and none are needed. Shaun Tan seems to have perfected the art of visual narrative with his surrealistic imagery and believable facial expressions. This book is a fascinating eye opener in every literal sense. It's really an enjoyable read and experience. Most highly recommended.(More pictures are available on my blog. I knew the basic idea of The Arrival, that it was in some way about the immigrant experience, but I had no idea about the approach. And what an approach! I don't know if you would call it metaphorical, magical realist, surreal, or what, but the effect is amazing. There are things here you just won't understand very well, being completely outside of your experience...and this works far, far better than any literal, historically accurate "immigrant story" could, by placing you in the subjective viewpoint of a 'stranger in a strange land'.That's the big scale strategy. But the small scale approach, on a panel-by-panel basis, is equally wonderful. Even before the story really kicks in, and we still seem firmly grounded reality, the first three pages had me hooked. The art is beautiful, and visual story-telling clever and richly emotional. This is really special. It does require a certain commitment and attention to follow along and place yourself in your story, so it may or may not be a good "children's book", but that would depend on the child.

Spectacularly beautiful book that tells the story of immigrating to a new land with strange, unfamiliar customs and creatures. Shaun Tan is a master illustrator with a unique way of seeing the world. There are no words in this book and none are needed. Amazing.

A beautiful, engaging (and diverse) way to tell a story. A great wordless resource when working with a variety of students, and I great "read" all its own for interested readers.

I happened to see this book when traveling--in a bookshop in Cologne, Germany. It contains only pictures, and I was riveted to the spot as I "read" through the frames. When I returned to the states, I read more about the book and the author--and ordered the book. I'm still in awe of how these haunting pictures speak to the alienation that immigrants (or others who are plunged into a totally new situation) experience--all without words. My grandfather was an immigrant from Poland in the late 19th century--how I wish I could show him this book.

I was so anxious for this book to arrive in the mail; I knew it was going to be something magical, just from the few illustrations I had seen. The Arrival is one of the most beautiful pieces of art I have ever seen, on several different levels. I paged through slowly, savoring each image. Tan often uses a series of small images to convey a thought or a feeling--each is a masterpiece. The book does what so much great art does--it captures the ineffable. It speaks without words, and conveys the universal human experience. The haunting, luminous illustrations seem to cut straight to the heart. It actually brought me to tears, as I recognized in Tan's imagery the small and large moments that animate the soul. I would give it 6 stars if I could.

What a beautiful, exquisite book!!! The author/artist has put his heart into this- captured expressions on his characters, gestures, new worlds, plants, creatures, unfamiliar food to eat, etc. He is SO creative and such a wonderful artist!! It must have taken him so long to draw these scenarios! It is a treasure, one that shows you new things each time you "read" through it.
