A decent overview of world religions, but definitely skewed towards western (Christian/Jewish) religions and traditions. The very obvious overlook of Native American religions and little coverage of non-western religions were significant drawbacks. I was expecting a relatively equal, solid overview of the major existing religions, and this book did not deliver. I did however like the overview of what religion is and the map of where specific religions are primarily practiced.As an aside, which is clearly not relevant to what the author intended, a brief introduction to historic religions (Aztec, Egyptian, Greek, Nortic, etc) would have been ideal.

Bought it to piss off my super Christian mother in law. It worked.

This is such a great book for adults to share with their curious children. We are not church-goers, nor super religious. However, we are very spiritual and always try to do things with love and respect for all people, races, and religions. I strongly feel this is an enlightening book to try to help kids understand family and friends' holidays and gatherings that we may not necessarily follow in exactly the same way.

My son wanted to understand other religions (he's 7) and so we bought this. We are about 1/2 way through it at this point and we really love the illustrations and the explanations of these religions. If I don't watch out, I'll learn something too.

This was one of a couple of similar books purchased recently for my niece, a first-grader who's already reading above grade level and who has a habit of asking questions that leave the adults in the family wondering how to find the answer. She's not asking as many religion questions as she had been, but already corrected one classmate's comment with information I'm sure she got from this book. An added bonus has been that all her grownups have also been learning from this book! It's a little general (to be expected) but does a fairly good job of covering the basics of the world's major religions. Even more important, it does so with no obvious bias.

This is exactly what I was hoping for. It gives enough information to keep the attention without getting into too much detail about each religion. My 9 year old son is enjoying reading it with me.

My 5th-grader is reading this for homeschooling. She is learning the basics of each world religion and just recently, correctly identified the religious leanings of a certain movie character based on her learning from this book. Valuable reference tool.

Nice overview of different religions. Not too in-depth, but the illustrations and graphics make it appealling to younger readers. Covered more religions than Mary Pope Osborne's book, One World, Many Religions, but her book goes into more depth. This is probably the right amount of information for elementary school kids. For people who want more information about how religions are related to one another, or got started, etc., see the Osborne book.

Some of the useful things inside:- Microeconomic tools for judging the epistemic incentives of groups of experts- Concise and useful explanations for how major insitutions (academia, medicine, politics, venture capitalism) break- Case studies in how to successful use Aumman's agreement theorem in real lifeThe most valuable part of this book by far is chapter 3, which is an extended dialogue between a cynical conventional economist ("C.C.E" or 'Cecie') and a visitor from a different world, trying to explain why a particular institution is killing babies. The example is a real one - the FDA hasn't approved a simple set of fats for intravenous baby food, causing severe brain damage in something like dozens of babies per year. And the explanation is a whirlwind tour of how our institutions work and how they break, with many concepts that I've been able to use elsewhere to great benefit.Above all, this book has changed the way I think about learning from experts. I'll end my review with an example of how I analyse things like this now.Recently someone came to me proposing a project for building a math-education website - combining math explanations and machine learning algorithms, connecting you with the best explanation given your background knowledge. And of my first 3 thoughts, 2 were about how the site would function and how a user would interact with it - it's important to concretely visualise a product to figure out if it feels like it would work. However, my 3rd thought was to do an adequacy analysis - I looked for data points about whether I should expect that, if this is a good idea that can work, why hasn't someone already done it? Think about all the money and time people spend on education each year - all the tutors in universities, all the teachers in high schools, all the assistant lecturers and support staff and government subsidies. Surely, if this project was a good idea, someone would've built it and it would be a common website we all use. Is the fact that this doesn't exist already enough evidence that it won't work?In general I don't see the educational marketplace of resources changing rapidly in response to new tech and research. There was a bunch of research about spaced repetition and how memorisation works, that nobody has jumped to incorporate into how universities work. Many people can tell you the best physics/math textbooks (e.g. Feynman Lectures) but most students will never read them. It *doesn't* look to me like a space where it would require a great deal of effort to out-do the best in the field. You might counter by pointing out the success of Khan Academy, but personally I'm not sure I'd consider the fact that a single dad can make lots of videos and do better than everyone else, a sign of success for the educational market.I'm not actually very confident in this analysis. However, the best part is that I can learn about the whole field by working on the one project. If the project fails, or I find out that someone else has tried this and failed, then I'll change my assessment of other projects in this space. On the other hand, if the project succeeds, I will update about how good the educational market is at incentivising people to create useful things like this.I wouldn't have made these models and hypotheses before, and for that reason I'm really glad I read this book.

"Freely mixing debates on the foundations of rational decision-making with tips for everyday life, Yudkowsky explores the central question of when we can (and can’t) expect to spot systemic inefficiencies, and exploit them."The book explores foundational questions of "inside-view" vs "outside-view" reasoning, all the while developing an understanding of how a civilization can achieve obviously-awful outcomes *without* anything special is going on.Analyzing situations via the *equilibria* they involve provides much of the answer, as Yudkowsky examines how to reason about and understand them.

Spends too much time arguing against "modest epistemology", but the insights on when and why our social systems can be systematically broken, with nobody able to fix them, make this book well worth reading and pondering.

Equity markets are efficient in the sense that all stock prices instantly adjust to new information--there are no genuine bills on the ground waiting to be picked up. Thus you can safely ignore someone tells you that INTC is overpriced because of the recent problems with its chips.But largely because of varying incentive structures, not every domain is efficient in this way. Thus it is feasible for a mere decision theorist to correctly diagnose problems with the Bank of Japan's monetary policy, even though the BoJ is run by domain experts.How is this possible? And why do some people insist that it is not possible?It is possible because (a) the BoJ governor cannot personally profit handsomely by making correct monetary policy, and (b) an outsider who lacks object-level expertise can still possess meta-level expertise, allowing him to correctly identify worthy object-level experts whose opinions to trust.Some people insist this is not possible, and that adjusting your beliefs to those of a wider reference class is always preferable. They do this at least in part because of status-related emotions.This book is basically an extended meditation on why EY should not have to quit his contrarian ways just because of Aumann's theorem. That's putting it glibly. It's actually pretty insightful and a quick read.

I loved the part explaining housing bubbles. As a bit of a real estate nerd that was a valued insight. I personally do not experience modest epistemology much myself,but when I do witness it there does not seem to be a universal epistemological adoption by the individual expressing it. I think this is common in the Midwest, where people seem to oscillate wildly from modest epistemology “We can’t possibly understand God’s plan” to arrogant epistemology “I could turn this economy around with a few simple tweaks to the budget”. I’m not sure what demographic the author interacts with that adheres so entirely to modesty, but I haven’t met many of them. As an entrepreneur I appreciated the balanced insight.

The first half of the book is outstanding, in identifying clearly the causes of suboptimal situation in the world we live in. The second half of the book disappoints as the narrative borders on meandering.

The easy to read discussion on a pressing topic that constantly sparks heated debate is refreshing. I learned a lot about myself and the world.

Just arrived in Tunis hoping that this book would get me through my week in Tunisia. For the past 48 hours, it has proven incredibly unhelpful and I just ordered the Lonely Planet guide via download PDF instead because I am desperate. This entire book does not even have a decent map of Tunis, leaving it completely up to me to figure out how to get from place to place. And, yet, it recommends that we walk to sites rather than taking a taxi. Additionally, the book does not make it clear what is the most interesting sites and the moderately interesting sites. After reading the book in an hour, I was not able to decipher which were the 2-3 must see sites. Although the book has pictures and a decent amount of background information, it is not a practical guide and certainly cannot be your only guide in the country. Buy this book if you never plan to travel to Tunisia and, instead, just want to learn about the country. Buy the Lonely Planet guide (or the Tunisia chapter of the Africa book) if you want practical information.

ok, but a bit out of date

Just came back from two weeks in Tunisia. As we had to go to Europe, we decided within a week to go to Tunisia and the only place I could get the book was from Amazon, but we were scare not to have it on time. We went all over Tunisia with OAT Travel. I showed the guide others places which were in the book and from that he detoured when he could do it. Without the book we will had missed a lot. As we travel a lot we have at least 27 books from DK Eyewitness Travel which we went to all those countries. Most of my books I use a marker to spot easier the places to see. We do not have too many places to see in the world, but I will never leave without those books. The Planet Books are very good too for places to eat and sleep.

Great intro to the culture of Tunisia and starting point for further research.

The DK Eyewitness Guide served as a wonderful resource during my recent trip to Tunisia. The photography was beautiful, The historical and cultural explanations were often more complete than that offered by my paid guide. It is easy to use and invaluable to anyone visiting. I'd highly recommend it.

A very informative guidebook!

As it is the case with all DK travel guides, this is a very hands on guide, with sightseeing routes to be followed and pics to give the reader an idea of what to see...

Candy Aisle Crafts by Jodi Levine features ideas and instructions on how to create fun edible treats using items from the candy aisle at the grocery store.Some of these ideas are pretty involved and go about the process in a way that I thought was time consuming. Instead of trying to melt hard candies, you can simply soften taffy and get the same results as she shows in some of the ideas.For other options, I have never even seen some of those types of candies. There is no guide on where to find those candies or how to order them online.Some of the ideas I thought looked like fun, like the cookie planets. That is one I would try out with my kids.My other issue with the book is the binding. I feel that all cooking related books should be spiral bound so the book actually stays open while you're in the kitchen trying to follow the instructions.Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for writing an honest review. This book has lovely photographs and lots of fun ideas. I give it only three stars because I found many of the projects to be more difficult/involved than I had hoped and because I found the book to have a lot of repetition from one idea to the next. I also would have liked more specific "source" information. For instance, in the description of the project that makes bowls out of starlight peppermint candies, the author explains that some brands of mints work better than others, but she doesn't say in what way or which brand she uses. I found that frustrating.I bought this as a gift for a creative, crafty family member, and she seemed interested in flipping through it. But all in all, I wouldn't buy it again and I'd just find these or similar ideas/instructions on Pinterest!

Perfect gift for a family with crafty kids! It doesn't call for anything that you couldn't find at a target or Michaels, and all of the craft look reasonably doable for a family with small children as long as adults are guiding! I gifted it along with some candy so that the kids could get started right away!

This book is BEAUTIFUL and super smart. Unique craft ideas that normal people can actually make. Materials seem easy to find and directions and photography are so clear. I am doing the "fish pops" with my Girl Scout Troop this week when we work on our pollution in the oceans unit… I am sure they will want it to be a regular part of this season's meetings. Looking forward to using the ideas for holiday crafts in my children's classrooms. I can't wait for the next book.

I had great hopes for this book. The examples of the candy cane bowls, the cut out marshmallow letters, and the s'mores monsters in online previews looked great. I could not wait to see more creative ideas like this. Unfortunately, those were the best ideas in the book. The rest was ways to cut marshmallows and gumdrops and stick them back together. My kids love crafts and so does my girl scout troop but there are better ideas for free on Pinterest.

I absolutely love this book. I love it as much as my 4 year old daughter does.We are particularly fond of the marshmallow section.Going to the supermarket used to be a chore, now it's a treat.Every friend I have with kids is getting a copy.

This book is too bad as a textbook. Cannot be simpler anymore in explanation as well as examples, problems, anywhere. Just putting in what it has to have in the book. If you are refreshing knowledge, this may be a good one. But for NEW students, AVOID this book as possible as you can.

I'm a mechatronics/control engineering student and I couldn't recommend this book more. It's a very clear consise to the point book. It's great for learning classical and modern control theory and matlab and simulink. Super useful book!!

A pretty decent book for anyone taking an introductory dynamic systems class. Some chapters could use some work, especially the examples, but it got me through the course with an A, so I'm happy about that!

It does a good job at explaining most of the concepts. The author is a professor at my school and he is very intelligent. Worth the money.

This is a very usable and clever book. A real help to us.

Love this book. The explanations are good. But it is workout example that help me get the material. My teacher goes lighting fast and sometimes i cannot keep up with taking notes, or have time to ask questions, so i reside into reading and using the examples to help. They always come thru so far.

I can't believe I'd never heard of Holmes' work until now. This helps me dive below form and try better to understand the reasons behind my black church experience.

This book was a whole education for me, and it has made me view everything associatedwith slavery differently. I especially appreciate the inclusion of contemplative practicesas they appear in rap, tap and other 20th century art forms, as well as the biographiesof King, Parks, etc., from a new point of view.

Contemplative Christianity is dominated by white, male authors and teachers. Barbara Holmes and Joy Unspeakable were EXACTLY what I needed, exactly when I needed it. Her stories, insights, perspective and research help expand the contemplative tradition to include people and practices that have not ever been represented. She validates ancestral wisdom as part of her and our contemplative tradition. I'm so grateful for this book and will read it many times over.

Joy Unspeakable is groundbreaking work, and Barbara Holmes brings it with knowledge and grace.

The research for this book is exceptional. My vocabulary was broadened. I was enlightened in the areas of African heritage and music genre. I had to read slowly.

Barbara was easy to follow as she guided me through the development of contemplative practices of the black church. I work in a women's state prison, this book is helping me expand my horizons about contemplation

Sometimes we grow up assuming certain words mean certain things, like the word "contemplate". In "Unspeakable Joy" Dr. Holmes showed me that there is no one way to "contemplate" and since reading it I have been trying to be aware of other ways. Contemplation should bring us to the subliminal space between here and there, so that opens up my understanding and brings it to a whole new level.

"Contemplation is not confined to designated and institutional sacred places... Some sacred places bear none of the expected characteristics. The fact that we prefer stained glass windows, pomp and circumstance... has nothing to do with the sacred."Barbara Holmes' JOY UNSPEABLE is a blend of Africana history, academic discussion of contemplation and her own experience.Fairly early on in her book, Holmes brings up Randall Bailey's point that there has been a de-Africanization of Christianity, which has led to a forgetting that Augustine - one of the pillars of the Christian church - was a bishop from Africa.When she zeros in on the beginnings of the African-American church in the US, things really start to get interesting. Holmes writes that "hush arbors" provided a physical place, far enough away from plantation owners, where slaves could "pray about their situation in cries so heartfelt that heaven itself must have shuddered."Thus was born the African-American roots of the black church's style of contemplation."Slavery is a crisis of such extraordinary proportions that unless equally extraordinary measures are taken, the result will always be the destruction of humanness... The contemplative turn occurs in the midst of trauma and is a crisis mediation that gives birth to a new community. This community contemplatively reorders its priorities and begins the designated task of sifting through God's broken heart for their liberation."Unlike eurocentric forms of contemplation, which tend to be individual, quiet and removed from the physical world, Holmes argues that "I have often wondered what Christian communities expect when they invoke the presence of the Spirit called Holy. [In the African-American experience] something happened when the Spirit was present.""The historical black church is the blessed legacy of the ancestors," says Holmes. Ancestors that are on a pilgrimmage where "that which has afflicted you may become your salvation."Given its rich history of communal contemplation, out loud and lamenting, in the middle of struggle, Holmes calls the black church in North America to "Claim its role as mother and witness to the working of God here on earth. As a mother, its first call is not to church growth but the birthing and nurturing of the Christ imaged in the least of us. As a witness to God-with-us against war and hurting the poor."Holmes reminds us of the three Marys (among them Mary, Jesus' mother, and Mary Magdalene) who remained at the foot of the cross with Jesus while all of his other followers, save John, fled. Holmes sees their witness as a powerful form of contemplation, right in the middle of suffering.She makes an interesting point that "contemplation always involves some mix of reality and transcendence... even more problematic is the belief that we are right and that our image and understanding of God supersedes all others..." Pentecost, to Holmes' way of thinking, is born out of communal contemplation and "from the realm of multiple realities, the Spirit storms the upper room, and disrupts the probability of institutional dysfunction that is certain to follow Christ's leave-taking."Holmes offers the rich examples of Fannie Hamer, Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, Malcolm X and Howard Thurman and Sue Bailey as being expressions of black contemplatives. In Holmes' opinion what black America needs is a "return to reclaim its unique Africana contemplative heritage," in order to re-connect spirituality with the present social justice movement in the US. Holmes argues that the passive resistance of the Civil Right movement of the 1960s was "the spiritual destination of these justice processons and was the consciousness of the nation." Holmes continues, "the end result was that a purportedly Christian nation was forced to view its black citizens as a prototype of the suffering God, absorbing violence into their own bodies without retaliation."While Holmes is aware of the difference between the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and the Black Lives Matter movement, [which is not grounded in black churches] she has hopes that the BLM movement will build upon this legacy.At the end of the day, Holmes remains deeply hopeful, defining hope as "a commitment to the strangeness of the future - a future that is uncertain, fragile, carefully negotiated and often wretched, strained and disfigured through suffering, yet it is situated in the narrow space of transcendence, like the element of surprise in the narrative, the imagined possibility tht brings resolution and redemption to the tragic and ironic, only to be upended and retured again to the struggle."Holmes concludes: "The creative exchange between the forces of segregation and nonviolent resistance could only be engaged after a contemplative period away from the immediacy of the struggle... In order to make new worlds, you need a profound understanding of the world as it is. The key is to be grounded in present reality with a reflexive grasp of the past and an irrational hope for the future."

I was really excited to finally receive my copy of Pailin's book. It's been on pre-order for months and I've long been a fan of her amazing cooking videos for awhile, so today was truly a great day when it finally arrived.What I was really pleased with to see immediately is that Pai did an excellent job at putting a substantial amount of information in the first few chapters of the book that go really far in explaining a lot of the foundation of Thai cooking. As you may know from her videos, she is an excellent teacher in that she communicates really clearly what she is doing, how to do it correctly, and most importantly, WHY she is doing it. (and all with a dose of charm!) Cooking isn't just assembling a bunch of ingredients in a bowl. Knowing how and when to add an ingredient and what that ingredient is contributing to the recipe in terms of flavor and texture is very important. I think that is why Pai can help you make good recipes great when you are actually preparing them.There is a lot of info on the various ingredients, from herbs to sweeteners to all the unique sauces that are used. And yes, we all wish we had a friendly Thai grocer down the street, but for most of us in N. America, that isn't common, so she gives some good tips on finding ingredients or when she believes "Educated substitutions" (good word choice) or even omissions are ok for the sake of the recipe. You should never let a lack of finding a key ingredient keep you from trying to learn these recipes, so she will help you overcome!There is also a section specifically on vegetarian and vegan dishes which is really great as that diet is quite common and Thai food lends itself really well to being easily offered in a veg variation.I see a lot of the great recipes I have already tried from her videos featured in this book, but was also pleased to see even more new ones as well as foundation recipes like curry pastes and stocks. You will see some nice mention of the region of dishes which is good, because I think that's one of the main missing pieces of information that many new to Thai food don't get at first. They don't often get to learn, that the cuisines in the North and South are dramatically different in style from each other and that curries don't just come in green or red. (see JUNGLE curry!)I am sure anyone new or familiar to Thai cooking will really love this book. One other cool feature of the book is that there are QR codes throughout it that allow you to quickly view a video on said topic right on your phone from the Hot Thai Kitchen site as you are reading! Ingenious!Something else that I have not seen before in a cooking book is a small table on each recipe page that shows a "breakdown" on the ingredients in terms of what their role is. I really love this 'cookbook' because it is so much more than that. I got mine 2 days ago and I cannot put it down. It's like reading a wonderful colorful novel about the history and culture of Thailand. This book is teaching cuisine not just recipes.I have been cooking Thai food from Pailin's YouTube recipes for about 8 months and this book really rounds out the whole experience. And I might add, I make some pretty awesome Thai food now!!Thank you!!

"Hot Thai Kitchen: Demystifying Thai Cuisine" is not only beautifully designed and full of great recipes, but it is also the perfect supplement to the Hot-Thai-Kitchen.com website. The background information included in the "Understanding Thai Cuisine" section was also very beneficial. I couldn't be happier with this cookbook.

Loved this so much I got 2 more as gifts for my little Brother and best friend. Pailin's YouTube Video's got me through some tough days over 3 months in the hospital for treatment in 2015. was waiting on this book to come out. Have been cooking Thai food since 1990, took about 30 classes over a 3 year period, and while I am pretty proficient, I really liked some of her takes on dishes, as well as new ones. I also liked her opening 60 pages, which give you some of the origins and underpinnings of Thai cuisine, which I got in my classes in the back room of the Royal Thai restaurant in Newport Beach, but are good for others learning and deeper understanding of why Thai food has layers of tastes in it. Like other Asian cuisines, too many Americans get used to the way the dishes have been altered to our tastes. Pailin's book gives you the authentic way to make things, while also letting you leverage some of the pastes, sauces and ingredients that are now more readily available today. And gives you substitutions for availability, tastes and items you may need to avoid. But also tells you when to avoid those, VERY important in my eyes. And the easy Scan Codes to leap to her YouTube Video on a particular method or Recipe really makes this a great gift for your friends and family. Because while I truly love to be told I will be cooking for a big group when I visit, it is time to Pay it Forward, and this book gives you that ability, while keeping it fun and easy, even for the nieces and nephews. I really like watching her cook on YouTube, and her website has some tasty recipes, but this book was a total letdown. There's only like 20 recipes, and they're all...odd... Half the book is talking about ingredients in detail, the story of her life, and pictures of her family. I wanted a cookbook, not a biography.

There are a number of good Thai books available, but I've found no better source of inspiration and guidance than this author. Well written, easy to follow with a bit of education thrown in for fun. Almost all of the ingredients are available nationwide, so get this book, a few "tools" and try some of these dishes. Your friends and family will thank you! Start with the "Falling Water" spicy beef salad...it's incredible. Her book will show you how to see the free video to watch it being made.

Great cookbook. Would be a great value at twice the price. Especially like the QR code link on the recipe page. This allows viewing a video as the author prepares the same dish. Plus, the first section of the book has much good info about tools, spices, techniques, etc. used in Thai cooking. Love the book!

Pailin is hands down my only go-to person for authentic Thai food. I've been along time since subscriber to her YouTube site and her cookbook delivers on every level. The book is beautiful and I especially like the sections on ingredients and cooking supplies. I have made countless meals using her recipes. My Thai friends cannot believe that I actually cooked the meals. They actually want me to show them how to make these meals. Whether you are buying this book for yourself or as a gift, you cannot go wrong. I highly recommend it!
