I previously read this book a little over ten years ago and wanted to revisit it. I'd forgotten just how easy it is to get drawn into Aly's adventures and I'm so glad to have revisited because it was similar to visiting with an old friend.This is the story of Aly Cooper who is the daughter of the famous Lioness of Tortall and Spymaster Cooper. Her parents wish her to find a task to be happy with instead of choosing to be idle. Aly knows she wants to follow in her Dad's footsteps as a Spy but when she approaches the subject with her parents, they refuse to budge on the matter. Deciding to take a couple of days to head off to visit family and friends nearby in her trusty rowboat, Aly is surprised to see Pirates in the Bay. Before she can turn around, she finds herself captured and soon sold into slavery. It's a good thing Aly has had some interesting training growing up and doesn't let that stop her from being determined to get free and back to her family.Little does Aly realize that this unexpected adventure will lead to a much more exciting time in her life and luckily is taken in by a well of family named the Balitangs who treats their servants very well. When she reluctantly makes a wager with the Trickster God Kyprioth, Aly finds her hands very full in trying to see to the safety of her charges and slowly realizing that a rebellion may be on the horizon. She will soon find herself drawn to a crow turned man named Nawat, coming to care for her charges, adventure, making friends, learning how to speak Crow, spywork including playing a variety of roles for the family, and starting to realize that there's a rebellion brewing on the horizon.Full of adventure, a touch of magic, a meddling God, some court intrigue, laughter, the power of family love, friendship, loyalty and surprises, it was a pleasure to get immersed back into this story.I can't wait to read the next book and all the books I can get my hands on by Tamora!

I absolutely love this book! Tamora Pierce's writing is engaging, creative and full of nuances that make these books fun for both teenagers and adults. Aly's voice is fresh, inventive and though she's young, she's not another annoying YA heroine. She learns from her mistakes and she's SMART. She stands up for what she thinks and she doesn't follow the herd. She's a heroine worth admiring.This was the first book I read of Tamora Pierce's world and even though it makes frequent mentions of other characters featured in her other series', I didn't feel lost at all. This story is well-paced, the world building is complete and presented in a sensible and easy to grasp way, and Aly's inventiveness brings the story a sense of fun and adventure that all ages identify with.Alianne (Aly) of Pirate's Swoop is the daughter of Alanna, the renowned first lady knight of Tortall. However, Aly isn't interested in following in her mother's footsteps. Instead, she hungers for a different kind of adventure - the work of a spy, following in the footsteps of her father. When Aly is kidnapped by slavers while traveling off the coast of Tortall, she finds herself entering into a wager with a god, an unwitting piece in a larger picture of life in the Copper Isles, her unplanned new home. I really felt close to Luther's thought processes when reading this volume, and his fear of losing his soul and his step by step approach to a differing emphasis in Christian thinking.

Martin Brecht's monumental three-volume biography of Martin Luther consists of Martin Luther: His Road to Reformation 1483-1521,Martin Luther 1521-1532: Shaping and Defining the Reformation, and Martin Luther The Preservation of the Church Vol 3 1532-1546, all published in English translation from the German by Fortress Press. To date I have worked through the first two volumes and am now embarking on the third. [see update below]These three volumes represent an extraordinary achievement. For a full appreciation, however, it is important to understand what exactly Brecht set out to do and what makes this work so valuable. His work is neither a traditional biography of Martin Luther, nor a systematic treatment of Luther's theology. What Brecht gives us here is closer to an exposition or digest of Luther's works (his books, sermons, and correspondence) set within a narrative context.Luther produced an enormous amount of material during his lifetime, with the standard English translation of Luther's works running to 55 large volumes (Luther's Works, eds. Jaroslav Pelikan and Helmut T. Lehmann). Brecht seems to have mastered not only this material, but the writings of many of Luther's opponents and contemporaries as well. The great service he has rendered for those of us who are not Luther specialists is that we now can turn to the appropriate section of Brecht's work for summary expositions of any of Luther's works and understand them in their particular historical context. Or perhaps better yet, we can read the biography to get a sense of Luther's activity as a whole, pausing here and there to read for ourselves particular works that strike our interest. For that purpose an excellent, affordable companion to Brecht is the beautifully bound and boxed four volume set edited by Theodore Tappert called Selected Writings of Martin Luther (Fortress Press, 2007).And what a benefit all this is to students and scholars! Imagine one is researching a particular event (for example, the Diet of Augsburg) or controversy (say, the sacramentarian controversy). Brecht will not only introduce us to those events and the major works related to them, but will bring into the discussion the more obscure sermons and letters of Luther from that period that shed important light of Luther's thinking. Consistent with his emphasis on primary sources is the fact that Brecht almost never mentions contemporary scholars in the body of his text. Endnotes cite the appropriate locations in Luther's Works (both English and German editions) along with any relevant secondary literature (the latter mostly in German).As I mentioned, this is not a traditional biography. The best biography of Luther in my opinion remains Roland Bainton's, Here I Stand: A Life of Martin Luther (Hendrickson Classic Biographies). In fact, Brecht seems to assume some knowledge of the key events, personages and locations on the part of his readers. Brecht includes helpful plates and illustrations, but no maps. He is less adept than Bainton and certain other biographers at painting the texture of a scene, or depicting the dramatic ebb and flow of events, or really helping us understand the driving inspiration behind some of the secondary characters. And to be honest, some narrative or descriptive portions can be tedious - for example, the initial chapter on Luther's ancestry and childhood (1:1-21) or the details of the struggle between Luther and the Zwickau city council (2:439-446). These are areas where Brecht seems to be striving for completeness or perhaps attempting to make an original contribution by unraveling the details of a complicated situation.The weaknesses just listed are things we can live with. Brecht has rendered us a great service with the wisdom, time and talent that he has poured into these volumes. This leads me to a final comment on the quality of the printing. These volumes are printed by Fortress Press (now Augsburg Fortress). I called the publisher in September 2009 and discovered that all three of these volumes are now available ONLY in "Print-On-Demand." The volume I saw printed this way was very difficult to read, but with some effort I was able to track down copies from earlier, regular printings. Let's hope that the publisher will go back to a regular printing. "Print-On-Demand" is not the way such an extraordinary achievement should be treated - by a Lutheran press no less!UPDATE: I have now completed the third volume and, as I expected, there are no changes necessary to my review above. Note that each volume has its own index, while volume three contains a additional, more comprehensive subject index covering the entire set. Finally, I assume that the "Print-On-Demand" problem noted above can be avoided entirely now with the appearance of the Kindle Edition.

This is the third volume of a trilogy on the Life of Martin Luther. (The other volumes are: "Martin Luther: His Road to Reformation," and "Martin Luther: Shaping and Defining the Reformation.") This volume deals with Luther's life after the glory days of the 95 Theses, Diet of Worms, and gradual acceptance and establishment of the Reformation. Luther the Doctor of Theology is beset by health problems and grows old and cantankerous, having limited patience to respond to the errors of supporters and opponents alike. Enduring great physical illness and miseries, he longs for life to end. But he continues to guide Melancthon and other reformers as they develop the foundational documents of Lutheran theology. At the end of his life, he confidently affirms the gospel he has preached.Many histories of Luther gloss over this period in his life. It was therefore interesting to see how the aged Luther continued to face ordinary problems of politics and church governance, and also ever-emerging errors in theology among those who accepted the reformation as well as its opponents. He continued to face his "Anfectungen" (feelings of despair and condemnation) and frequently needed to cling to Christ's mercy and be reminded of the Gospel. I found this comforting, to see that even such a giant of the faith was not immune to doubt all through his life.This volume is shorter than the preceding two, and I feel that maybe the author rushed through it a little bit, as it does not seem as in-depth as his earlier volumes. However, I am glad that he pressed forward to complete the trilogy and allow us to see this part of Luther's life. This volume also includes interesting illustrations, including a drawing of Luther a year before his death, showing his physical decline, the house where Luther died, his gravestone, a cast of his hands, and a drawing of the dead Luther's face.

As Brecht so correctly titles this final volume of three on the life of Luther, this was the theme of his final sixteen years: the preservation of the church.He was obsessed with the proclamation of the pure gospel. His final years were devoted to this cause, and Brecht preserves this history in his continued easy to read style, but very scholarly and historically accurate.While all around him toil and turmoil reigned against this pure gospel and its valued proclamation, the Reformer remainded steadfast in spite of failing health. His disputes with those who wanted to reform too much as well as political problems and disputes even within those of the Lutheran persuasion all troubled him. At times his patience wore thin, and there were signs of anger and rudeness exhibited. But, my God, what this man endured and his steadfastness to the Gospel and God's means of salvation are phenomenal and to be followed. I'm familiar with Steven Strogatz from being an avid Radiolab listener, so I anxiously awaited The Calculus of Friendship. It's a beautiful, poignant story of the intense, special, and evolving relationship between student & teacher. It is also an amazing writing accomplishment that successfully combines math and memoir. While I can't say that I completely understand all the math, the mathematics only adds to this story rather than detracting from it. It shows the true elegance & beauty of calculus, along with the elegance & beauty of working together as student and teacher to solve the calculus. Mr. Joffray is truly an extraordinary teacher, one that allows his students to teach him. I honestly wish that I could learn math from both of these men, and they are portrayed so well through their letters that I would also like to share an interesting dinner & discussion with them. Maybe they could (attempt to) further explain "differentiating under the integral sign" to me! I'm going to insist that my son read this book as he has already had some exemplary math (and chemistry!) teachers that have greatly influenced his life, and is embarking on his college career where I fervently hope he meets more of the same.

This is one of the most beautiful books I've read in a long time. It's the story of a teacher and student and the influence they had on each other. The student and teacher have some very powerful moments and it's just a really great story. It's good for people who love math (my engineer partner read and loved it) and it's good for those who are less inclined to mathematics (me).

This is a very interesting book about the relationship between a high school student and teacher that extends long after the student has graduated. Because both student and teacher are math teachers, the correspondence between them frequently revolves aroung math problems that interest them, but it includes much more than that. Not being mathematically inclined whatsoever, I skipped over all the math, and found it a touching story. For those interested in the math too, it will be a double treat.

Full disclosure: Don Joffray, about whom this book was written, was a great friend of my parents so I knew him as much more than a teacher. The great thing about this book is that the author, Steve Strogatz, paints an accurate, empathetic picture of Joff the man & Joff the teacher, and also weaves a compelling story about the enduring friendship between two math geeks (I say this with admiration). I am not a math major so some of the calculations went beyond my meager understanding, but that didn't matter. Even the math conversations replicated in the book were glimpses into the continuum of a student/teacher realtionship. Very cool!- V. Norris

This was a nice read about a student who became a friend and teacher to his former teacher. The math was a little steep for me in many cases, but that was incidental to the story. Very well-written.

I read this book the summer before teaching Calculus for the first time. It is a fabulous read! It has now become my annual gift to my graduating calculus students.

... and those are the types of experience that are not easy to translate from human mind to symbols, also a pathetic bounds between humans are the extreme limits of our intellectual knowledge. However the author suceeds in it's intent to show the former bound, but not so much to the last. Indeed, the title Calculus of Friendship, gave a hint that the last was not the central point.

I am purchasing a classroom set and my math seniors will be reading this in class before they graduate and go out into the world.

Just started driving Lyft this past week, and still trying to find the best times and places that work for me, but with a 2014 Accord hybrid getting 46 mpg it seems a no brainer and is a lot of fun.This book is well organized and I can see the value in the recommended apps, especially Stride Tax. My 2nd night driving, I actually picked up an employee of Stride at the airport and took him to his hotel downtown! Harry, Noah says hi...lol. Stride works great for logging all my miles and I drive looking for riders most anywhere I go now, if I have time to go out of my way. If I get someone on the way to the grocery store, I'll go get them and continue on my errands later (when I have the time... that way my miles are deductible...I am LOOKING for work!)Thanks Harry!

Even if they have the spoken moral support of their families they find themselves pulled in many directions because of difficult cultural expectations. Often the family demands one thing while the college demands another. The students finds herself being torn in pieces by things she doesn't understand. Make Your Home Among Strangers is a fictional novel about Lizet, a young Hispanic girl from a lower-middle-class neighborhood in Miami, who is accepted into a prestigious college in New York state. She struggles in her new â€œpredominantly whiteâ€ environment, both academically and socially. She must decide whether she wants to join the upper echelon of college-degree-earning Latinos or get stuck in her old life with her sister, one-year-old nephew, and recently divorced mother. While the novel is technically fiction, I couldnâ€™t help but read it as an autobiography of the author Jennine Capo Crucet. There are some scenes that come off as too real (and sometimes too benign) to be made up. Many scenes are overly descriptive, such as Lizetâ€™s traveling between her college and home, so that the emotional and symbolic narrative gets lost in the noise. Most of the time the story feels long, unwieldy, and a slog to get through. However, there are gems among the rough as Lizetâ€™s struggles to settle in both her old and new life make her an endearing protagonist. Itâ€™s easy to sympathize with her yearning to been seen as both a normal college student and someone who understands a Cuban immigrants struggle. Readers who want to learn about the struggle of Latino identity in America, or who can connect to it personally, may find Make Your Home Among Strangers a worthwhile read if they can forgive the slow pace and often overwritten narrative.

The first real literature that I've been able to bring myself to read in a long while. The current political climate basically makes me want to retreat into fluff and nonsense, but a friend suggested this book, and I was glad that I read it. I enjoyed the style of the book and the voice of the narrator. I felt like I got a good sense for the characters and the places without a lot of verbose description. I definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in having a view into the other side of the politics of immigration and the experiences of first-generation Americans and first-generation college attendees.

Your honest and raw description of the Events that happened in Miami near the end of last century certainly transported this reader into the Miami that raised me. I too left home for a Rawlings-like experience and sometimes I still feel guilty for moving away. Your writing style makes everyone identify and feel like Lizet. Once I purchased this book I could not put it down and I stayed up almost all night to finish this book. I know this just got published, but I cannot wait to read your next work. This wasn't one of my favorite books; however, it made for a great group discussion at my book club. I do remember the events around Elian's arrival and forced departure but had not realized how it would effect the lives of the Cuban American population in and around Miami. I did relate to Lizet's difficulty assimilating with her peers. As one friend reminded us, don't ask where someone is from when they don't appear to look like your vision of an American. Another book club member referenced the line about not trying to forget your mistakes, just draw a line through it and move on. She used it to help a young student in her class who was having trouble fitting in.

This anomaly of a girl who prospers in a poor Cuban Miami high school faces pressures of an elite college while being pulled by the family to return and fore sake her dreams. Her courage and focus is inspiring, especially given the absence of a support network of any kind in her adopted city.

This is a very thoughtful portrayal of a young Cuban woman leaving "home" for strangers (college) only to return to home and discover that her family felt strange to her. The author seems to have captured the essence of "first generation" to college.

Enjoyable summer read. Some very strong ideas presented about first generation college students and the fine line they are required to walk as they balance home culture with college/mainstream culture.

This is a must read guide for those in the process of buying an EHR or anyone interested in learning more about electronic health records. It covers health information technology basics, how to select a vendor partner, ways to detemine the cost,benefits and return on your EHR investment, advice on how to successfully implement an EHR, and clearly outlines the facts about "meaningful use." There is also an appendix listing the names and web sites of the 62 national Regional Extension Centers, and a section on Medicare and Medicaid incentive payments. This book is an excellent reference for anyone in the health informatics field.

Excellent overview of EHRs. The authors have done a great job addressing how EHRs can used to improve the quality of care, financial performance and operational efficiencies of a healthcare organization. Tactical and easy to read. Leads the reader through an industry overview, vendor selection, contracting, implementation and optimization. Worth reading even for industry vets.

Very well developed book, that can truly educate/teach all levels from the patient to system support staff regarding overall definition and vision of EMR.

This book is filled with various surprises for readers, from the character development to the plot that seems to arc across several different genres of books. One surprising element to this book is the sheer depth of character development. Our MC literally starts off as a blank slate and we can see his character development virtually shapes the entirety of the story. One thing that was very rare was that there is not a ton of the typical action found in other sci-fi and fantasy novels but as a reader I never lost interest in the book. Also I really enjoyed the female characters throughout the book as they seem to be more dynamic than we are usually shown in books. While the main driving element of the women might seem to be seen in other novels the passion at which the women grow and change is truly unique. The adult situations in the book are story driven and not added as any sort of fanservice. Love is the main driving element of this book and in truth it also describes the feelings that this reader had for the book.

I really like this book and found it quite enjoyable to read. The only reason I did not give this book 5 stars was because it tended to drag on. It was almost like the Author had to account for every minute that passed. Because of this the events that happened in the book did not give any realistic time for them to settle into the characters. Nobody had any time to think things over and everything was excepted at face value. Because of this the whole story I had a feeling of surrealism to it and this is maybe what the Author was going for, we shall see.

There is an entire herd of dead horses beaten in this book. Had to skip about 30% of the book just to get to the points of the story because it was reiterated and talked about at length that much. The story itself was decent just took forever to get to it. And the premise that a male will have intercourse that much without release is preposterous. Hed have blue balls so bad he couldn't walk.

The dialog feels a little childish. Over selling the changes in society to people who already agree. That said, the hero is just right, no angst about sex, does what needs doing without a lot of handwringing.

This is a very strange charming series. If you are expecting a lot of physical action you will be disappointed, rather consider it more of a world building type of novel. There is a fair amount of sex, however its tastefully presented and make sense in the context of the storyline. An inordinate amount of time is spent just having the characters talking to each other - something rarely seen in most fantasy novels.

Fairy tale like allegory about a post apocalyptic world. I can't believe a woman would write a book with as much sex and male fantasy in it but that's apparently the case. Strong character development and even with (in spite of?) the sex the story was compelling. My only complaint would be how nice, generous and cooperative EVERYONE in the book was - kind of hard to accept, and frankly it got old and reduced any dramatic tension in the book. Unraveling the mystery of how the world developed the way it did was quite engrossing.

This book is boring way to many words to say very little the author is trying to create some fantasy social engineering experiment . I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

For all the repetitive nature and just wanting it to move along, I couldn't put it down. I find Lark to be a very intriguing character and want to learn more about her. If it could move along a little faster without repeating information over and over and over and over...I would rate it a 4 or 4.5.
