Some complain that when compared to Gaiman's other works, Norse Mythology falls a bit flat. The goal of this project was not to tell new stories, but to breath new life into the old stories. Gaiman stays true to the source materials and presents the stories of Thor and Odin and Loki and all of the Norse gods in a language that feels fresh and engaging. I've worked my way through the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda and they are anything but an easy read. The prose of a millennia past is something of a hot mess. Gaiman has done all of the painful research for us and given us the old stories gift-wrapped in tight, modern language and a clarity and singular narrative that old Snorri Sturluson was incapable of providing. If you want new and exciting stories about Thor and the gang, pick up a Marvel Comic book or Rick Riodan's Magus Chase series. But if you have a genuine academic interest in the old Norse stories, you'll learn more from spending a day with Gaiman's Norse mythology than you will learn from spending a year sifting through the Prose and Poetic Edda and it will be a hell of a lot more fun.

This is genuine storytelling in the oral tradition. It is deliberately written as if you were listening to a grandmother telling the tale around the fire. Picture her waving her arms and leaning forward to emphasize a point, her voice going gutteral and silken interchangeably as she voices a giant or the Trickster Loki.A prime example is the story of how poetry was born. "It is a long story, and it does no credit to anyone: there is murder in it, and trickery, lies and foolishness, seduction and pursuit. Listen.It began not long after the dawn of time, in a war between the gods: the Aesir fought the Vanir. The Aesir were warlike gods of battle and conquest; the Vanir were softer, brother and sister gods and goddesses who made the soils fertile and the plants grow, but none the less powerful for that."It is a great story, with a perfect comedic last line.I had this idea that Norse mythology was dire and bleak. A mythology that ends with Ragnorök, the death of the gods and the end of the world doesn't sound entertaining. I couldn't be more wrong. For one thing, Ragnorök is the end of one cycle of the world. Like Wagner's Ring, the world will start over again, just as it once did to usher in the time of the gods.I have read other books by Neil Gaiman, and so far, this is my favorite. I thought the writing exceptionally evocative. Obviously, Gaiman had some amazing original material to work with, but this was great fun to read. It brings fabulous images to mind, such as this from "Hymir and Thor's Fishing Expedition": "The grandmother with nine hundred heads killed each ox, skinned it, and tossed it into her enormous cooking pot. The pot boiled and bubbled over a fire which hissed and spat, and she stirred it with a spoon as big as an oak tree. She sang quietly to herself as she cooked, in a voice like a thousand old women all singing at the tops of their voices at once."I usually buy paperbacks, but I got "Norse Mythology" in hardback, because the cover of the hardback is beautiful. The details of Thor's hammer, Mjölnir, are raised and the hammer glimmers. The story of why Thor's hammer is short-handled is included in this collection. Most of the depictions of the hammer in Viking jewelry and carvings show the handle even shorter than on the book cover.5 stars and a book to re-read with great pleasure!Happy Reader

First off, let me just admit that I'm a Neil Gaiman fan boy. I love everything he's written. I live his style, his humor, his language.The thing is...none of that's here. What we have is a more or less generic retelling of a few of the more famous Norse myths. If you're already familiar with them (which I am), then you'll find these retellings uninspired.I'd recommend this book to anyone who hasn't read any Norse myths. Its an adequate introduction. Otherwise, there's no real point in bothering.

I wanted to have a fun read of Norse Mythology. Neil Gaiman provides that. He starts where he should, which means you have to start like you are a 5 year old first listening to a fable by the fire light. You have to meet these characters somewhere. Just a little later you will get the fun stories and the logic, or lack thereof, of these characters and worlds will play into the structure provided in the first pages.There are no illustrations, leaving illustrated editions for some future artist. I appreciate this. I get to use my own imagination guided only by Gaiman's clear prose.The stories are clear and concise. There is very little plodding, even when plodding is the activity in the story.The book is properly designed. Great typeface, excellent page layout, nice weight to the paper. Unlike many current books your eyes don't trip on a minefield of typographical errors.This book is what it is, and that is a lot. It isn't Stardust, Coraline, or American Gods, and you should not expect it to be.

I bought this book right when it released at midnight and being hard to put down, I read it completely through the night. It was a fairly quick read but very enjoyable. As I recently read my first novel by Gaiman, I was interested in his writing style and intrigued to hear he would be retelling Norse Mythology.Coming into the book, I only knew the basics of Norse Mythology so I was excited to learn more about it. It is clear Gaiman has a great interest in the subject and he put a lot of care into it. These are stories that have been told over and over again and this is another retelling to pass through the countless generations these stories have survived.He retells the stories as chronologically as you can, and keeps the story flowing as it jumps around each chapter telling a new story and each story just as interesting as the last. The stories he chose were all fascinating, there wasn't a single one that was boring.If you want to find out more about Norse Mythology this is definitely a fantastic read and a good place to start.

The book itself is awesome! The way it is narrated, the way the story is told, is truly unique. The Kindle version is hard to navigate though. There is no table of contents, no way to jump around. The book was written and published at the end of Russian Romanticism, and the move towards realism is obvious. The author himself had a very interesting life. I liked this book much more than I had expected to.

I love books set in this time period (War and Peace is one of my favorite books) and this book lived up to my expectations. I loved the characters, the drama, and of course, the romanticism of this period, which the author laid out beautifully. Perchorin is the ultimate playboy, officer, aloof man of stature that everyone thinks of when they think of this period, and he does it so well throughout the book. The first 40-50 pages are not the world's greatest, but trust me, it's worth sinking your teeth into if you like the kind of upper-crust military types and the drama of their social circles.

This review is for this edition of the book only, not for the actual story. The Formatting is bad. The table of contents, the footnotes and the font are all incredibly amateur. The book size is bad, for only 82 pages I expected it to be shorter and more compact. The cover is blurry on the front, definitely a low res jpg that was just slapped on the front. There's not even any page numbers!

The work is in fact two different stories, both of which eventually meld together to explain the deplorable weaknesses and magnificent virtues of the Russian nobility of the nineteenth century. of

Lermontov is a sleeper by which I mean that he is lesser known and read outside Russia than other immortals. This novel was recommended to me by a Russian friend from Georgia and I was delighted to find a germinal work influenced greatly by Pushkin and Lord Byron. I read Hero of Our Time after Pushkin's Eugene Onegin. Both Puskin and Lermontov were mad for Byron's poetry as he had earned a certain rock star status. Pushkin was intrigued by blending poetry into the novel as a literary structure in Eugene Onegin. Lermontov's hero, Pechorin, and Pushkin's Onegin have much in common -- both are lovers named after Russian rivers. They both achieve the character type which became known as the "superfluous man" -- an intellect with charisma who finds his gifts are insufficient to influence his world in the way he has imagined. He becomes an outcast or misfit, in a sense, operating outside the conventions of morality and society -- disdainful of both -- with a clear sense of the futility and absurdity of his life. In Pechorin's case the young soldier chooses to influence his life but does so without hope. Perchorin's superfluous man emerges the underground man of Dostoyevski. This perspective is expressed multifariously in the next century in Camus' Stranger, the characters who in habit Beckett's tragicomedies and in the invisible man of Ralph Ellsion. Perhaps his experience in the Russian military created this sense of despair. His exile to the Caucasus Mountain between the Black and Caspian Seas ultimately had an uplifting affect upon Lermontov from the sheer beauty of the landscape which is memorably described in this novel. Like Pushkin, Lermontov was killed in a duel, in the latter's case at the tender age of 26. Chekhov was said to have remarked, "Still a boy and he wrote that." Lermontov is a must read to understand how the superfluous man personified in Lermontov has so influenced writers of diverse genres who followed him.

To further appreciate the point of view of 19th century Russians and their sharp divisions of class, if not race and definitely also of religion, read this work by Mikhail Lermontov. As with "Tales from the Underground" and Pushkin and Tolstoy and "Fathers and Sons," etc., we see enduring themes of man's communication with an understanding of other men. Curiosity is the joy. Russian literature of this time is so much based on empathy, which is much more important to have than sympathy, which can be superficial. Ernest Gaines once promoted Russian literature to see these interactions as universal and fundamental. The way 21st century Americans text and tweet and selfie and post, barely able to communicate face to face without saying "like" and "awesome" and "you know" ad nauseam, they need to listen to Gaines and to read these Russian greats, virtuosos that they are.Once you get past the establishment of the narrator, the translator will bridge you through to the "psychology" of this novel and you will recognize the times have changed and our methods of interaction have deteriorated, but what we wish to encounter when we meet strangers and old friends has not changed. Instead of being lost in a different century with a foreign people, the themes will rise to the top, no different from the best Shakespeare.

Three stars is blind benefit of the doubt. It’s been a long day & I’m tired. Aesthetically, the book beneath the bookcover is lack-luster. Also, I received a 278 page book. What I ordered, was advertised as 312 pages book. Where are the other 34 pages? If these factors are any reflection of the content. This book may be getting returned.

It is SERIOUSLY LAME that AFTER Piers Vaughan translated Papus' book this one appeared! Do people have any shame?Give Piers Vaughan your money instead. His translation is more affordable and better translated. He also has a legitimate reason and lineage which justifies his efforts. His publisher is Rose Circle.How shameful. This guy should be embarrassed. I'm sure John Michael Greer had no idea of this major breach of etiquette. He is solid.

Can't wait till spring to build my deck. The book gave me several good ideas. I do wish it had more information on floating decks built on those concrete piers where you are close to the ground. I don't recall seeing that in the book.

Wish it had some more comprehensive material. Some of the articles in the collection are a lot more comprehensive and educational. Some are more, "look at this neat thing I did". But solid pictures and good materials for the most part.

Really good information for building a sturdy and safe deck. Information on building codes and safety pointers are very nice features of this valuable and helpful book.

I have several deck projects and thought a little knowledge from others would be a great idea. Reading was vey informative and pictures excellent for descriptive content. Would recommend.

Great into.. new materials and tools. A very good read - helps me judge my grandson's work on his deck :)

Great book, very thorough

My husband first checked this book out from the Library along with several other books to research how to build a deck. Out of all of the books he looked at this was his favorite one and so I ordered it for him. I'm sure he will use it a lot when building our new entry deck. Would recommend it to others getting ready to do that type of project.

I always get the new Zagat's and this seller sent it quickly. However I don't like this new format/ version of the guide itself. The older versions are better but can't be used since they're outdated. Restaurants have closed and new ones opened so I buy a new guide every year. For some misguided reason they've alternated dark and light print on every review making it harder to read. It's distracting and the light print is too pale to read quickly and easily.

The type size used (way too small), makes for very difficult reading.

Do not like the new format; The rating system is much harder to distinguish between restaurants and you really can not tell what a meal will cost. I end up going to the restaurant website to look at the menu to figure out the cost. What a disappointment. Very difficult to read now. Stupid type face. I've used for decades and always purchased. won't do so next year with this print type.

I ordered this because it looked interesting. For someone fairly new to Churchill, it does not disappoint.

There is not likely to be another Englishman with Churchhill's acumen for language, his succinct observations, and a veiled sense of merriment that underlay many of his remarks, publicly and privately. Today's lackluster politicians could learn much from him. His rejoinder to a colleague who advised him that his fly buttons were undone was worth the price of the book by itself! And, he was half-American.

This relatively small book is divided into several sections with slices from Churchill's life and quotations related to politics, speaches, friends, animals, family, etc.Here are few excerpts:While campaigning in 1900, it is said that the young Churchill was doing a spot of canvassing when one of those he approached exclaimed:"Vote for you? Why, I'd rather vote for the Devil!""I understand", Churchill answered, "But in case your friend is not running, may I count on your support?"* * *When passed a very long but turgidly written memorandum on some worthy but uninspiring subject, the elderly Prime Minister weighed the thick wad of paper in his hands and commented, "This paper by its very length defends itself against the risk of being read."* * *Churchill liked animals; sometimes he found this difficult to reconcile with his fondness for rich food. Anthony Montague Brown recalled that 'One Christmas he was about to carve a goose. Learning it was one of his own, he put down the knife and fork and said, "I could not possibly eat a bird that I have known socially."* * *A BBC broadcaster described once sitting next to Churchill as he gave a speech, keeping his audience hanging on to his every word.
