My son, 8, love legos, ultimate dot to dot, crosswords, really hard mazes, origami, all thing puzzle like and requiring multi-step directions. We had a book of paper monsters and I was looking for another like it. These are even BETTER. He really enjoys make making them, and is teaching me all about the different connections. These are very interesting, have good directions, look great when they are done and are very entertaining. Adults will enjoy and be challenged as will kids. I would recommend this for age 10+ unless you have a kid like mine that is super focused and loves this kind of thing. Beautiful illustrations on the characters. Well worth it!

Loooooove these, as well as Paper Monsters from the same author/publisher. The are easy to pop out, and the directions are easy to understand. Plus there's an adorable "back story" for each robot. Really beautiful graphics, and the finished bots are so freaking adorable. My friend has taken most of these finished robots (and monsters) for her and her colleagues, who provide skills counseling and therapy to kids and families; to help connect with the kiddos. I'm sort of proud of that!

Maybe I didn't read as closely as I should have. I was hoping to use this in my gifted classroom for STEM type activities, but it's not for that purpose. Each robot is a punch-out that you fold and tape together, so it can only be "built" once.

I really love paper crafts. They are a great way to pass the time. These ones are a bit annoying to follow through on. The instructions and the robots are in separate sections so there is lots of flipping back and forth. It also makes it difficult to share the book with other people as the instructions pages are not designed to be taken out of the book. The tabs are pretty small as well so it may not be best for younger children. The designs are really cool and it's nice that there are different designers.

Love it! My 4 year old grandson & I made all 25 robots. It was a bit advanced for him, but the pieces were perforated so he was able to get them out of the pages and help with the gluing. The robots are designed by different people, so some of the instructions are clearer than others.My grandson loved the bio stories accompanying each robot. He was pleased as punch when they were all done and we lined them up across the floor & took photos of him with his Bots.

We like paper toys a lot in our house because the kids can get a new monster or robot whenever they want. This book is cool but the paper is not as easy to fold as the paper toy monsters book. Also, there isn't a single person writing the instructions. Each designer writes their own so it is tough to follow the directions from robot to robot.

Incredible! fun to play with!

Tons of challenging fun for my son and I. A great project to work together on (or alone).

I read this book based on the Hofstra University Honors College Required Reading List. I was curious about the book and found it to be an intriguing read as an early text (1405 AD - Late European Middle Ages) extolling the intellectual capabilities of women and their contributions to western civilization. All of Pizan’s perspectives were understandable and have relevancy now for analyzing the expanding awareness of how women contribute to society and what sorts of obstacles they still face in pursuing their chosen personal & professional paths. Christine de Pizan was an extraordinary writer and poet. Her books of poetry are as beautiful as any you are likely to read. Some of her poems concern the death of her husband, some are loved poems, but all are marvelous in expression and feeling. She was a woman who wrote so well as to support her entire family by herself after her husband died and left her a widow. Besides poetry she wrote a book on the art of war, and also this book, "The book of the City of Ladies," which is one of the first ever written about women running their own affairs. Christine was so successful that she is depicted in thousands of paintings illustrating women writers. This translation is a good one.

Fascinating look into the world of a most unusual - female - author written in1405 (yes, 1405), by Christine de Pizan. Translated to English in 1982. The author "... builds an allegorical fortified city for women using examples of the important contributions women have made to Western civilization and arguments that prove their intellectual and moral equality of men."

Christine falls asleep while contemplating why women in her society get such a bad rap, and has a long dream about exemplary women and their characteristics.Did you ever wonder why we just accept that women in the Middle Ages were considered demons in disguise? Christine tells us all about what she thinks of that concept and of those who insist on spreading such maliciousness, all in an engaging story full of examples of brave, courageous, intelligent, pious, beautiful, generous women. The book was written to dispel some of the nastier slanders then current about women, but it's still good reading today.I confess that during the part about martyrs I wandered off a bit (it is some gruesome stuff in places), but as a period source, it's definitely one every history maven ought to have. Christine is intelligent, observant, and witty; her writing fairly sparkles with indignation over the treatment of women and her sardonic amusement at those men spreading those lies. While hyper-Catholic and in places highly allegorical (and in many places its version of "history" is highly questionable, of course), it is an essential look at a time period where women didn't often make their views known in written form.This book is distinct from "The Book of the Treasure of the City of Ladies".

Initially bought for a class, but Christine's work is a wonderful glimpse into what medieval life was like.

Noble, and really ground-breaking for the fifteenth century. One of the first feminist books probably ever written. It is written, obviously in a dated fashion, so the reading can get a little redundant.

This is an awesome translation and is a must for any feminist’s library

She shares the experiences of her family, helping us understand the gamut of emotions they go through.This is a very valuable book telling of the resilience of a family and the support of a great group of friends and relatives. I recommend it to anyone interested in spinal cord injury.

I was planning to sail to Beaver Island last summer and was looking for a book to take with me when I stumbled upon 'Some Things Are Unbreakable' by Kate Willette. Now, a story about a guy recovering from a sking accident might not sound all that good...But it is!The book opens in Kate's kitchen on a routine evening when the phone rings and she is told that Bruce, her husband and father of their two school age children, has been seriously injured in a sking accident. At the hospital Kate learns that Bruce is paralized and the outlook is uncertain. So begins the story of recovery; not just for Bruce, but for the family. The story is told from the perspective of a wife and mother with compassion and unflinching honesty. I found "Some Things Are Unbreakable" hard to put down and very inspiring.

Our "Bruce" (his name really is Bruce) had a spinal cord injury in April 2014. I am his mother in law. This book made me sob over and over as the details of those early days came back so vividly. We are truly blessed to have had an "incomplete" paralysis. Now 16 months out from the injury most of the initial side effects have subsided and he is walking with leg braces. His paralysis remains below his knees but we remain hopeful for a full recovery. He was lucky to have Craig Hospital in Denver nearby and family, friends and even strangers step up to help his wife and daughters during this time of need. Our Bruce was also able to return to work fairly quickly and is working on becoming the active person that he was prior to his accident. I say all of this because the book parallels his story in so many ways. I picked up this book and read it straight through! It is well written and definitely engaging. I am passing it on to friends.

great book. very sad, honest, uplifting. I like how the author was very honest about her frustrations dealing with her husband's spinal cord injury. It was also interesting to see how it affected the children. very detailed and informative too.

Her clinical descriptions are gripping; her emotional insight extraordinary; her humor and honesty admirable. I am so grateful to her for writing this book and allowing us to share her family's story.On a personal note: I have a nephew in the Marine Corps, serving in Iraq. If Tim is hurt, Kate's book is what I will send his wife. She'd need to know what Kate has learned.

This is a rich and compelling story. Kate Willette talks about the months following her husband's near-fatal accident that left him with a C5-C6 spinal cord injury. It really illustrates the strength of love and family in the face of adversity. Her writing is such that, as the story unfolds, it's almost like reading about people you know. This is a great read for anyone, whether or not they know someone with SCI. If you do know someone with SCI or their family, this story can give you some insight into their situation you might not otherwise have the opportunity to gain. Highly recommended.

This journal-memoir by Kate Willette of a year in her life and that of her family is extraordinary. It is gripping from the opening pages when Kate found out about her husband Bruce's skiing accident all the way through the incredible nightmarish year that followed.What makes the book so readable and takes it many notches above other inspirational heartwrending stories of tragedy is the humor and downright irreverence with which the author treats all subjects. In other hands such a story might come off as only gutwrenching and sad or phonily upbeat. In this author's hands, it is by turns touching, melancholy, sweet, bitter, sarcastic, and angry. In other words it is real and it is human.I won't tell more details of the book as some reviewers have already done. Read it for yourself to see what happens. I promise you will be moved and riveted and inspired and all those other words I started out with.

I admit that I'm a very unique type of NASCAR fan. I love the drivers, love reading about them, checking out the standings, and perusing all the gossip about their personal lives. I don't actually like watching the races. See, how odd is that? Sure, occasionally I'll stumble into a room where the race is on television (thanks to my mom and stepfather, who are NASCAR fanatics), but other than that I won't waste hours sitting down to watch cars drive in endless circles. But, okay, yes, the crashes are kind of cool!I was always a Dale Earnhardt fan. The number three car got my vote every time. When he died in a crash at the Daytona 500 on February 18, 2001, I was devasted--as were thousands upon thousands of NASCAR enthusiasts around the globe. The thing about NASCAR is that its devout fans come from every walk of life, from every part of the world, and they are a dedicated, loud-mouth bunch of people. They're also a family. When one of their "own" dies, as on that day when the racing world lost Dale Earnhardt, everyone mourned. Even fans who didn't like Earnhardt (and by that I mean they dared to cheer for another driver, like Jeff Gordon or Tony Stewart), sadly and publicly grieved the loss of a legend.Although I now root for Dale Earnhardt, Jr. in the number eight car, I still remember his father with pride. I still look for memorabilia with that number three. I still read books like SPEED SHOW, which discuss NASCAR, its history, and the mark it's made on the racing world. Filled with numerous facts, figures, and full-color photos, SPEED SHOW is sure to delight any and all NASCAR fans, regardless of age. i have read 9 php-mysql books. this is the only one that got me to working code wherein php is controlling mysql. there are three major hurdles that are not solved by any of the books: (1) the differerent versions of mysql require that you get the online documentation for your version because small reserved word changes make non-working code. (2) as root you have to grant the mysql user permissions correctly before anything runs. and (3) i don't know how to make php give debugging information and as a result any error in the script causes a halt as soon as the first error is encountered. the many negative reviews herein sound like the critics expected to be spoon fed both php and mysql as beginners. this book is for those who are determined to get a core working php-mysql setup for a server and to understand and control it. it is the best and only good one of the 9 that i read and abandoned.

I found it a little outdated, but good value.

While this is a typical O'Reilly book (marvelously and expertly written), there weren't many examples of utilizing what you just learned such that it would sink in. It also pre-supposed a bit (not much mind you) of programming experience/knowledge of which I have none. The description is a bit mis-leading that way as it states that if you know HTML and are ready for the next step this is the book. It should say, if you know HTML, a bit of C, or PERL, and some SQL you will benefit from learning PHP & MySQL. Not disappointed, just not the book for me...

This book is full of errors and I never got any thing to work. Stay away from this book. I suggest the Friend of Ed series.

I really enjoyed reading this one! The authors have an easy style that lets you accelerate if you already have a good grasp of that topic but want a refresher. If the section covers something you don't know then there are clear code examples and text that explains what the code does.Don't make the assumption you'll learn lots of PHP and MySQL from one book! You'll get an introduction to both that is much lighter than covered in other O'Reilly books. Where this book shines is in the juncture of the two; it really makes clear some of the ways you can customize web pages using a database. Once you lay this one down you should spend a few hours with a favorite beverage; just toss some of the possibilities around in your head.If you have a beginning understanding of PHP and/or MySQL, this book will help you take the next step. It will also help you understand technologies like Joomla and other database-driven websites. You won't learn how to program, in a general sense, but you'll get turned on by the possibilities. If you're already a coder but new to PHP and MySQL, you'll get a taste of what can be accomplished with this powerful combination.

This is definitely below the bar for an O'Reilly book. I am about 1/3 way thru and already have to spend hours searching the Internet for the right steps on phpMyAdmin and Apache2 config on MacBook Pro. I am debating if I should finish the rest of the book, best to avoid this book to begin with.[update] The second half of the book is a bit better, I would recommend skipping the first few chapters and start at Practical PHP.

This dreadful book is so far below O'Reilly's normal high standard that it's hard to believe anyone at the company saw it before publication. It is riddled from start to finish with typos, technical errors, bad coding practices, contradictions and statements that are just plain wrong. It's quite baffling that O'Reilly would let a book this bad hit the shelves.What is particularly worrying is that this is the second edition. The first was also full of mistakes (see the reviews on the O'Reilly website) and the publisher seems to have acknowledged this by rushing out this second edition only a year after the first, but the new edition fixes few of the problems of the first while introducing a host of new ones. One of the worst books ever published by O'Reilly. Avoid at all costs.
