I also grew up in Atlanta, lived on Cherokee Avenue and went to Slaton Elementary School. Graduated from Murphy High School in 1964. Dennis did a great job capturing the history and spirit of that area during the 50's and 60's. I shared many of his experiences at almost every venue, restaurant, school, and store. Geographically, as a kid I rode my bike on almost all the streets in his book. Great book about Atlanta during that period.
What a nostalgic moment to be transported back to the days of my childhood and teen years in the areas surrounding Lakewood and Grant Park, and, of course, my alma mater, Roosevelt High School. We didn't realize what pain and poverty there was in the lives of our friends and classmates we thought we knew so well. Thank you for letting us glimpse once more back to those days in time again. A beautiful read and well written, too.
Fade from Grey is a beautifully and sensitively written memoir of the Author’s coming of age on Atlanta’s Southside. I found the book a joy to read. It is filled with colorful imagery painted by the many sub-stories and characters that make this book a memoir for all.
Your story made me realize that many of my Oakland City & Cascade Heights friends were living very different lives. Why didn’t I notice? I’ll be thinking about this book for a long time. Thank you Dennis
Absolutley loved Fade from Grey. It is well written and straight from the heart. I highly recommend reading this book.
Dennis Lindsey has written a textured and sensitive narrative about his boyhood growing up in Southside Atlanta around the Grant Park neighborhood. He lived in an environment of poverty, family dysfunction, and the prevalent racism of the times (the fifties and early sixties). Even so, there are moments of tenderness, laughter, and closeness which weave their magic through the story and against all odds provide a backdrop for personal growth and the beginnings of a later life of personal and professional achievement.For anyone now living or has lived in Atlanta this book provides many historical and landmark references, insights, and local lore. The description of childhood in the fifties and sixties with its freedoms and simple pleasures will bring back happy memories for those of a certain age and delight those whose grandparents grew up during this time.The author takes the reader on a journey filled with happy moments, sad times, and surprising twists as he walks, runs, an sometimes stumbles from elementary school into high school. Dennis is an educated and experienced journalist and has written and enjoyable and engrossing tale of his childhood filled with warmth and authenticity. It is a contribution and a gift to all those who similarly shared this time and place and to future readers who want to know what it was like in Southside Atlanta during this historic period.
If you came of age in Atlanta, GA during the 50's or 60's you must read this book. If you are a student of history or are interested in the evolution of the human spirit you should read this novel. This book tells the tale of how one man who lived through poverty, integration, and the search for maturity found self realization. I was there and experienced many of the incidents mentioned in the this masterful tale of a bunch of teenagers trying to make sense out of a changing world, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know how we got from there to here.
Really enjoyed reading this book about hard times and real life from my part of town. There was a stigma about our side of town during those years and it was felt by most of us teenagers I suppose. Dennis does a great job of sharing the struggles his family endured like so many in that area at the time. He takes everyone on a journey through so many notable landmarks around the Southside which in turn brings back many good memories.
