About the Author

Malala Yousafzai is a cofounder and board member of Malala Fund. Malala began her campaign for education at age eleven, when she anonymously blogged for BBC Urdu about life under the Taliban in Pakistan's Swat Valley. Inspired by her father's activism, Malala soon began advocating publicly for girls' education, attracting international media attention and awards. At age fifteen, she was attacked by the Taliban for speaking out. Malala recovered in the United Kingdom and continued her fight for girls. In 2013, she founded Malala Fund with her father, Ziauddin. My wish is that this book is read by people who can't see that there is a human being behind each displaced person. That there is a story behind every life. That we all want the same thing, a life worth living.

We Are Displaced tells the story of Malala and her family becoming internally displaced and then living in England after she was shot as well as the stories of several other women and girls who have been displaced as well. The stories are told in their own words with their own emotions. Some are still living in refugee camps, some are working hard to make a new life in a new country. One didn’t even learn why her parents fled when she was young and one “adopted” a refugee family when they arrived in America. These are all important stories to know. As I read the book, I found myself reading bits and pieces to anyone who would listen. I very highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

My 8 yr-old daughter and I learned a lot from listening to these inspiring survival stories from women from around the globe. It is hard to imagine loosing everything including loved ones. How these girls managed to overcome their losses and ordeals are life lessons that no one should ever experience. Very relevant in the unstable world we currently live in to raise awareness on the lives of the refugees we might have around us and on our own vulnerabilities.

What a marvelous and heartbreaking story about displaced families and refugees all over the world. We need to take note about not only the hatred they experienced in their own countries, but also the racism and hatred they continue to experience in their new lands.

The best book that I have ever read

THIS IS a very informative book. This young woman has endured so much. The story of her life evokes emotion of empathy and gratitude to live in a country, although not perfect, but where girls may attend school. This is a must read for any one who wants to know what it is like to be a young refugee. So many of us take our freedoms for granted and have no idea why families flee the countries of their birth.

The stories Malala shares are tragic and amazing at the same time. I highly recommend this book.

I had purchased quite a few of Blair's publications before I notice they had something in common. First, not only are these guidebooks of high quality, covering regions of Appalachia that are of particular interest to me, but they are all published by the same press - John F. Blair of Winston-Salem.Virginia's Shenandoah Valley and Southwest, Northeastern Tennessee, and the Western North Carolina mountains and, DING, the light bulb came on! These are good books, across the board!This one is now in its third edition, and is a real gem of a guide. Like the other books in the Blair series, this guide is organized into driving tours which emphasize architectural and natural landmarks along each route. They are NOT pragmatic guidebooks in terms of listings of restaurants, hotels, and tourist attractions. They are more cultural and historical guides, to give you a feeling for the meaning of the land you're traveling. They provide the contexts to pique your interest and leave the lodging and eating, generally, to other sources.My one criticism of this book is slight: The guide focusses entirely on the rural areas and tiny villages along your routes. You don't get much feedback about the lovely towns in this region, including such places as Boone, Brevard, Asheville, Morganton, Hendersonville, Waynesboro, and Wilkesboro. Sakowski, the dedicated and skilled author, really wants to keep this book focused on country, and it shows. Blowing Rock and Highlands, as important resort centers, get a bit more page space.I know this region, literally, like the back of my hand, and I can assure any reader that what they will find here is a well-written, accurate, comprehensive, and enjoyable book.

Nice book. I deleted one star because nothing was mentioned about roads in and around Brevard and Transylvania County which are every bit as scenic and historic as roads mentioned in the book. This bias by omission gave me the impression the author has some kind of beef with that Chamber of Commerce or other city or county official.

Well-written and easy to follow. Has helpful suggestions such as best places to park at various attractions, advantage points for getting the best views, and others. The author has grouped the routes so that one can easily complete one segment or tour at a time, and the included maps make it easy to do parts of several tours if that works better for your itenerary.

This book is absolutely fantastic. We've driven half or so of the tours so far, and would highly recommend it to anyone who lives or frequently visits western NC. The best part of the book is the historical information. You could drive past a historically important site and never notice it or understand the significance of it, but this book helps keep you aware of even the smallest details. Watch out for the mileage numbers- it may seem like a 90 mile tour will only take a little while, but count on no more than 2 tours per day. And don't expect Carolyn to tell you when the pavement ends- that's part of the adventure I suppose!

I gave this book to my husband for Christmas with the caveat that I can ride along on his adventures! We live 4 miles from the NC border near Hayesville, NC, so these routes are day trips for us. We already have our first two explorations planned! Now we are just waiting for spring to arrive.Thank you Ms. Sakowski for an awesome guide that is comprehensive and informative!

I was introduced to this book by a friend and ended up buying the whole series! If you want to know more about western NC and spend your days enjoying a well written dialog that accurately directs you to place the other guides don't even mention, Buy this book. If you want a restaurant guide look elsewhere. I can wholeheartedly recommend the entire series from this publisher. Similar to the "off the beaten path" series only better, written by life long residents that obviously love their home state!

My father-in-law has a cabin in the western NC area and always takes us on tours around nearby. After a week-long visit there, I fell in love with the area and bought this for my next visit up there. But I have decided to give it to him as a Christmas gift to keep up there so his guests can look through it and pick out a tour. He loves driving all day long to see the local attractions and this book has so much more than he knows about. I'm sure he will love it.

What a great little helper. It enabled us to go places and see things on our trip through North Carolina that we probably would have never seen if we just hit the road! A little research really paid off and we studied this book carefully and planned our two week vacation using a lot of the data in it. Hopefully you will find it as rewarding as we did and enjoy your travels as much!

Love! Love! Love! Love this book! I find this book very valuable for my field. This book helps with malpractice and liability as you can tell in the title. A couple of scenarios are given in the book and it's up to you how to navigate around the situation. In my field, we use our code of ethics to help guide us through the scenarios which can be challenging. This is good reading for school before clinical practice!

Loved this beautifully written book and lush detail of the life of Botticelli and his muse. Filled with longing and romance, there was a perfect tension described between the various aspects of Simonetta and Sandro's life together and apart.A piece of history which I knew nothing about, but now want to travel to Florence to see 'The Birth of Venus' at the Uffizi Gallery and visit Botticelli and Simonetta Cattaneo Vespucci grave at Ognissanti.Highly recommend read if you enjoy history, romance, solid character development and a wonderful story that will leave you thinking of these two lovers long after the last page is finished.

I have always loved the works of Botticelli, and have seen the famous painting of the Birth of Venus in the Uffizi. I was not prepared, however, for the way that Alyssa yanked me into her story and kept me there, so smitten was I that I stayed up far too late in the night to find out what happened to the beautiful Simonetta and her love, Sandro. I will never again be able to look at a Botticelli and not think of this novel. The characters are masterfully wrought, the setting of Florence bright and visual, and the love story is one that will warm your heart

As an Art History major, I always enjoy books about art and artists. And I love historical fiction. This was a pleasant and fast read, but by no means great. The characters and descriptions are not deeply developed, but it is nice way to spend rainy day

This book was entertaining, especially when on vacation in Florence, as I was when I started. You can see the Medici homes and works in the uffizi that are just as the author describes. Unfortunately, I feel like the characters lacked depth (maybe because they are based on limited knowledge about the real people?), and the plot pretty simplistic. This made the book less compelling than it could have been.

I really enjoyed The Most Beautiful Woman in Florence. The writing is very poetic and descriptive without being boring. Simonetta's character is well written. This novel has a nice balance of Drama and Romance. Great summer read. I am definitely looking forward to reading Palambo's other novel.If you are a historical fiction fan like me, I strongly suggest giving this novel a read!

Reading reviews before I purchased this, I expected a far more comprehensive historical background. The constant emphasis on Simonetta's beauty wss superfluous and irritating. Just a fairly superficial love story.

I like historical fiction. This started off well but begin to fall off like there was a hurry to end it.

Interesting character and good historic backdrop...some forced descriptions of actions...hard to understand why heroine immediately fell for Botticelli.

After having a recent problem with a Hamster, I did as much reading as I could to try and solve the problem (biting, anxiety, don't ask...). But as a result, I got the opportunity to read all the top rated books here. If you're trying to decide which one book to buy, this is the one.A few others are very good too, but lack in different ways. Hamsters for Dummies has a lot of good info, but it's all black and white and no color pictures, which I think is important. This book is all color with tons of pictures. It includes all the basic info you want, like housing choices, food options, treats, behavior, common ailments, etc. and also has more extensive info on the the history, different breeds, breeding, etc. It's well layed out, with a good index. The author clearly knows her hamstmers and tells it as she sees it in the first person.It's also worth mentioning that this is a good book for an adult, or older child. So many hamster books are written for children. That's nice, except me as the mother will be the one actually buying everything and probably doing most of the care anyway.So, if you're looking for that one book to either help decide if you want a hamster, or have a reference while taking care of these pets, I think this is the best choice.

This book is packed full of information on hamsters and I found it quite surprising.this is more of a mature child or adult read ,but its written very well and has more information than I ever expected on Hamsters..breeds,color and care but lots of infomation on habits in the home and the best chances of taming and enjoying your hamster in a good cage setting..of coarse diseases and health care are discussed.a good home for the hamster with the proper food is what is most important..Im so glad to find books on these and other small animals being written to give the animal its full benifit in its life and to be enjoyed.B.W.

I enjoyed this book so much and have recommended it to friends. You never know what Layne is going to do next. She is absolutely fearless. She starts out in the restaurant business and then before we know it we are whisked away to Argentina and the tango which Layne decides to master. Somewhere along the way, she starts taking taxis and asking the taxi drive to take her to his (or her) favorite restaurant. The results vary. Layne describes the meals in loving detail. Being a vegetarian, I couldn't quite share her enthusiasm for most of the meals. Nevertheless, one gains an appreciation of local cooking. As an aside I tried asking a taxi driver on a recent trip about his favorite restaurant hoping to discover some local treasure. "Golden Corral" was his answer, "great food at a reasonable price" Through a series of adventures and misadventures Layne starts driving a taxi in New York City. At that point I began to doubt her sanity. She does survive and the book ends in Germany where she meets a very compatible taxi driver. I hope that there is a sequel and wonder if Layne will drive a taxi in Germany.

One more very privileged woman finding her way in the world. I enjoyed the food and taxi driver stories but skimmed the soul searching.

Didn't know what to expect when I bought this as I am neither a fan of memoirs (thanks to 3 Cups of Tea) nor cooking. But wow, this is such an interesting book I could hardly put it down. I read it in the span of 24 hours - umm, calling in sick from work to finish it off.The author tells a rather aimless, yet entertaining story of her life full of travel, love and cooking. Such a great book. I highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed this book. It was well written and very interesting. It's about food, three cities and personal relationships and interactions. And taxis!

I thought I was purchasing a very different book then this . Not so much about food , more about a women's journey . And for me personally not very interesting . Driving a taxi , really ? I did enjoy the ending therefore 3 stars . I wish I could give more , but no .

An engaging , smart and funny memoir about taxi driving, tango, food, and love. A very enjoyable and educational read. Loved it!!!!!!!

I was extremely skeptical about this book when I first picked it up. I feared it would be all 'woo-woo' and 'scented candles'. I have a lot of reservations about the whole self-help/relationship/men are from mars category. After a few pages, I was able to put those fears aside. This book is filled with useful, step-by-instructions, well researched, scientifically-based observations and highly relatable real world examples. The author's personal story, honesty and background added to the reading experience too. Quite often with advice books, there's a few golden nuggets but a lot of fluff/irrelevance but I've gone back and noticed that I've bookmarked more pages than I normally would. In each section, there was at least one insight that made me go "I didn't think of that before but that is so true". I also appreciate how it never patronizes and recognizes too that women change - both physically and mentally - and not all rules apply. If you want to rid yourself of false beliefs, address your guilt and relationship issues, transition from the boardroom to the bedroom without suppressing who you are - read this book.

If you are looking for a solution to any blocks regarding romantic relationships, this book is for you. Suki has the solution through the magnetic process. First there is a quiz to identify which archetype you are, which tells you what your natural preferences are. Followed by ways to release any past ghosts, ways to communication with men, understand attraction and create a supportive environment to help bring the right man into your life. There are many exercises that are helpful and easy to practice. I know this book will help me to begin to attract my future partner and I’m excited to share it with all my girlfriends.

An excellent and easy read. I'm not usually one to read this type of material, but I love the author's personal love stories and wanted even more. It's so true that we go through stages in our life about what is important and what is not. At the end of it all, love transcends the wealth and materialistic elements of life. I read it without doing the exercises, but will be sitting down again to go through them all.I applaud the author for bringing all of her knowledge forward in such a candid and vulnerable way. I recommend this to anyone who wants to find their own happiness.

I didn't want to put this book down; it was a real treat to read, almost a guilty pleasure but one that is beneficial.I think the thing that got me most was the author's level of vulnerability and connection to the reader. She freely shares her personal history and the pain she's had to heal in order to illustrate the way to heal. This book is insightful, thought-provoking, and delicious.

The body awareness exercises were especially helpful as they blend emotional, mental and spiritual awareness for deeper insight. The balance of modern science and ancient wisdom offers a refreshing look at applying quantum physics to real life experience. Suki Sohn makes complicated philosophies and theories simple, understandable and relevant to personal relationships. A very useful and thoughtful read for someone healing from hurts.
