I've been looking for a book that answers the question "How do I go from my SWOT analysis (a chart that puts on one page strengths, weaknesses, external opportunities and threats) to a plan that really works?" Most of the books I've read recommend that a manager work up their analysis and then use it to write their plan. But I've noticed that going from analysis to an awesome game-winning plan is extremely hard to do, and is something I and my managers do with less success than I would like.This book addresses my very specific but important question by describing what the right person needs to do to set the right conditions to have the right flash of insight, and how our usual planning techniques actually go against this natural process. Duggan makes a clear and non-technical argument and, for what it's worth, seems to match my experience.The few shortcomings of the book, in my mind, are that it is difficult to clearly apply this approach to an organizational setting. His one example using the GE "What Works" matrix is a bit thin and without clear results, making me wonder why he could not find a better example with real results, and why GE ultimately discontinued the method. Secondly, this book does not help someone become more able to have flashes of insight. Setting the right conditions is great, but it is no guarantee of brilliance. Perhaps this would be a question for his next book.Overall, I loved this book because it gave a solid framework for an important and longstanding question I've had, but I only gave 4 stars because of the shortcomings mentioned above.

All these kinds of thinking happen through flashes of insight—strategic intuition. And now that we know how it works, you can learn to do it better. That's what this book is about.

The other side of knowing has been little spoken about yet much of the great discoveries of science have come from intuitive thought. This book adds some much needed credibility to the other side of knowing. It helps give us a worldview that is both objective and subjective, physical and mystical. Thanks to Duggan for this important work.

Most business teaching starts with a process to achieve a goal, whether that be strategic, financial or marketing. However, rarely is the type of thinking required to execute the process at an exceptional level addressed. Duggan's book provides a methodology that he calls strategic intuition to achieve a higher quality of thinking. In some ways it is re-statement of the idea that great thinking almost always is multi-discipline in nature. However, he presents the idea in a practical way that gives it a richness which facilitates understanding and usability.I plan to use the book in my introductory entrepreneurship courses.

A gift, so unsure of how well it was liked.

A pretty quick read and to the point. The ideas resonated with me. Real innovation comes not from planning harder and wanting it more than the next person. It comes from having a deep understanding of the subject both from an historical and contemporary perspective. Then one has to be open and willing to let the mind find connections amongst a variety of existing ideas/tools to create a new path (dharma) or innovation. Where the book was particularly relevant, in my opinion, was the recognition that true innovation only occurs in the proper environment or situation (karma). Dharma and karma fit like hand in glove. Hence the infrequency of real and substantial innovation.

Purchased as a gift for son who has a million legos and an endless imagination. While it's true this has no instructions, it is great for giving ideas of what you can build... hence the title: "Lego IDEAS".While he doesn't always make something exactly like the picture, the point is, he is using his imagination and not staring at a screen. He also learns to improvise if we don't have a particular piece.A really neat book for Lego lovers looking for extra ideas. Would also make an awesome coffee table book.

I purchased this book with the idea that there would be building ideas as well as some instructions as to how to create them. The book itself is simply photographs of various Lego creations. It does not provide any instructions or break downs of items to use to build their images. Although there are some great ideas, I wish there was a bit more directive for kiddos that want their image to look exactly as the photograph. I would not recommend this product for people wanting step-by-step instructions, but for those simply looking for inspiration this is a good book.

As a child of the 80's, I remember fondly the old LEGO Idea books. In those books, there were lots of photos of LEGO creations, and instructions that showed how to build some of the models in the book. I remember the Lego Idea Book 6000 the best, that's the one that follows Bill and Mary as they build a house, explore a city, travel to space, and then back in time to a medieval castle. When I saw the title of this book, the obvious connection was to those old books, so how does it compare?The one thing that's missing is the instructions - this is not an instruction manual. Also, unlike Sean Kenney's smaller books (Cool City,Cool Cars and Trucks, and Cool Robots), this is a big book - nearly 200 pages! Like Sean's books, this book is filled with photos of LEGO creations. Like Sean's books, the intent of the book is to give you ideas on how to build things. You'll find that a lot of ideas can be crammed into 200 pages.The book is broken up into sections, essentially these are: vehicles, buildings, spaceships & robots, castles, pirates & adventure, and real world creations. This last section is very interesting, showing you things such as picture frames and pencil holders made out of LEGO. As you can see, like the old LEGO Idea book, this book hits on many of LEGO's core themes.Each of the sections starts out with a two page spread of useful parts that can be used to build creations in that section. I found that even these pages gave me ideas and started me thinking on how a particular part could be used. After that you'll find a number of creations beautifully photographed, often with multiple views which come in handy if you are attempting to reverse engineer one of the creations so that you can build it yourself. I can't tell you how many times I've looked at a LEGO truck and wished I could see how the frame was built. The multiple angle photos in this book help so that you won't experience that problem. At the end of each section, you'll find a few pages where you "Meet the Builder." These include some interview style questions where you learn about the builder who wrote a particular section of the book. I was surprised to find that one of the builders is only 18!I think LEGO fans of all ages will enjoy the book, but young children might have a hard time handling the book due to its size. The lack of instructions also mean that it is probably more suited to an experienced LEGO builder - either an older child or a parent who enjoys building with younger children. My six year old son enjoys paging through the book, but it's a bit much for my 3 year old to handle. Neither would be able to build anything in this book without my help.Overall, I think this is another great book option to inspire LEGO builders - but remember this book is about ideas and imagination - and you can't write instructions for that. If you know what you are buying, I think you'll really like this book, but don't expect it to be what it is not. If you want instructions, try one of the Brickmaster books such as LEGO City Brickmaster.

I like this item because for me buying lego boxes seems more and more pointless...They come packaged with the right amount of pieces that you assemble in one way to create the design advertised...The problem that comes with that is that in reality, kids destroy it really fast and then lose several pieces... So basically, it's done.. You build it once and unless you glue it, you will never build it again...This book is relevant because its purpose is to inspire kids to build new items with a variety of pieces... So at the end, I find the purchase more relevant.

Got it for my young nephew he said the book isn't that detailed as the other Lego books usually are. So in my opinion it depends on your kid's age and interest if your kid wants to follow precise instructions to build that ain't the book for him. But for someone who would just like to have ideas and they'd go for them their own way that would be a great book. Hope that helps!

This is like an engineering version of a DK Publishing tour guide book, but for legos.Little kid loves it because it gives him details of how specific lego shapes can be strategically used to make realistic representations of anything.For the sale price <$10 it's a no brainer.

I had very, very high hopes for this. It has a lot of ideas, but it's more just pictures of things that have been built and less of a how to. Ideas aren't a problem for my son, but ideas on how to execute them with Legos are where he needs some guidance. Perhaps as he gets older, he will gain a better appreciation for all of the ideas in the book. For now, he just gets frustrated in trying to make them. My fiancé, however, loves the book. Perhaps it would be better for someone who's older and more interested in figuring out how to make it than being shown.

Young Gen Nakaoka has survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, and his story picks up as the city tries to reconstruct itself after being destroyed. Gen goes back to school, but he's more interested in rediscovering old friends who went missing soon after the bombing. They deal with the effects of those events by starting a life of crime, one of the few ways to make any money. Gen's mother and older brother deal with food and money shortages elsewhere in the city, as well as the after-effects of radiation. All of this is seen through the innocent eyes of young Gen. He's actually unrelentingly positive for someone who has seen what he's seen. While there's innocence to the book, it is combined with real political sophistication. Gen blames his own country for getting them into WWII and doesn't fall for the patriotism he sees around him. Later, he uncovers misdeeds by the Americans and their research on bodies affected by radiation. Nakazawa was a real-life Hiroshima survivor, and his experiences give this manga classic, originally published in the '70s, a powerful kick, although it reveals its age with Tezuka-inspired designs. Nakazawa was born in Hiroshima, and was six years old when the city was destroyed by an atomic bomb in 1945. The Barefoot Gen series of 10 graphic novels tells the story of the World War II atomic bombing of Hiroshima Japan through the eyes of a young boy Gen Nakaoka who relates the events lived through by the author Keiji Nakazawa. Book 5, The Never-Ending War starts in December 1947, two and a half years after the war has officially ended. Hiroshima is being repaired and is occupied by American troops. The Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission has set up labs to evaluate the effects of the blast on the people. Gen's father, sister and brother were killed during the blast, and his mother now suffers from radiation sickness. Gen's older brother Koji has to leave to work in a coal mine to earn money for the family, leaving Gen and his younger brother Akira to care for their sick mother and find food and medical care. Gen has befriended a group of street orphans who have been working for local racketeers and helps them escape a life of crime. This is a difficult book because it portrays the hardships that continue long after war is over. The Never-Ending War is the constant struggle that Gen, his friends and family must endure years after the war ended.

Barefoot Gen is a firsthand account of "the singular horror" of the 20th Century. My understanding of history as taught to me by the winners of WWII was shaken to its core by this graphic novel of the United States bombing of Hiroshima, and my country's complicity in the silence about what happened afterward. If we are ever to have a hope of moving forward from our dysfunctional state of denial we would do well to revisit our assessment of the closing of the war in the Pacific. The Barefoot Gen series is a good place to start. The series should be required reading in every secondary school in America.

I bought and read the first volume of this series in the mid to late 80s. This volume continues the story of a little band of survivors of the Hiroshima bombing, centered around Gen, and how they go about getting along in the brave new world. This carefully and pointedly shows that children are truly victims of war no matter the outcome.

I like a lot of the pages - seemed perfect for a gift for a 9 year old... until I started reading closer. Too many pages have older content including: Describe a vacation from hell, too many pages on crushes and what physical features attract you, what physical features you would change about yourself, questions about sneaking out to a party, etc. Just seemed a bit inappropriate for 9 years old. It definitely had potential... a lot of GREAT pages.

The only major complaint I have with this is that it pushes sexual maturity topics a little bit too often. Asking if a young girls been in love, and then asking pretty much the same type of things in multiple sections. I think that it's best to let young girls be fun and cute, but not to keep asking kiss and crush and flirt and love questions over and over.The other parts of the book are nice though. I just was frustrated that my daughter felt she had to complete the book by trying to act too mature.

This has become my go-to gift for my daughter's tween friends. It's full of color and fun things to do. Girls (and I am sure some boys) can learn about themselves, discover meaning, and feel proud of who they are! It's small in size so easy to take along in a purse or backpack and really can't go wrong on the price of this. I've bought others but this one is the best hands down!

Kilcullen made his reputation with works like "The Accidental Guerilla," which dissected the complex of circumstances and motives that leads people into insurgencies. Here, Kilcullen looks forward at how four global trends--population growth, urbanization, littoralization, and connectivity, are shaping the environment for future conflicts. He argues, with compelling logic and illustrative anecdotes, that Western militaries must prepare for the likely possibility of conflict in the fast-growing, ill-governed, coastal megacities of the developing world. He provides much food for thought, observing that military power will be ineffective or counterproductive if not tailored to a keen grasp of the local social, political, and economic realities. Recommended reading for all natsec and forpol wonks.

Other reviewers have covered the details. Some reviewers categorize it as warfare book. I didn't see it as a warfare book but rather, it's a look at the dynamics of social development in the 3rd world which coincidently will include conflicts that are far different than we are familiar with on many levels.My input is simply that I read this book months ago. I've spent time in some of the places described. I get it. Barely a day goes by that I don't reflect back on some aspect of Kilcullen's thesis to understand and comprehend the implications to realpolitik to challenge the nation state for governance.Great book for high information seekers! I've recommended it a dozen times or so to friends that are like me, trying to understand what we see.

This is a good book but definitely not a page turner. It goes into great detail on every topic which makes it drawn out at times. The actual subject is very interesting and Kilcullen does an amazing job examining several issues through the lens of a sociologist as well as military and political expert. If you can commit to reading through the dry parts, this is a very interesting book and has some fresh ideas/concepts.

This book is EXPLOSIVE and packed with predictions for our future conflicts that are backed up by past and current history. Having been in the DoD and with some experience fighting guerilla type war, I find Kilcullen to be SPOT ON with his analysis of conflict history and chillingly accurate with his predictions, (as some of what he predicts has already started to play out around the world). Tip: Read with a highlighter and pencil for annotating the margins with your thoughts. A must read for anyone who is concerned about the future of civilization and world society as we've known it.

This book is a wealth of knowledge for military strategists, anthropologists, emergency managers, political scientists, historians and probably some other groups/professions as well. While it is not directed at any one of those in particular, any and all of them can utilize the information to their advantage. The only negative I had (and would have given the book 4-1/2 stars if possible) is that the author is not as adept in his analysis as he is in his presentation. That said, if you are using the facts and not the speculation, it is a valuable tool.

Looking at cities as organisms was exceedingly helpful and instantly recognizable in my occupation which had be in a destroyed city while reading. Still very Social Sciency, with a couple of instances of strained application (Afghanistan and the littoral area).Opening story set a tone of smarminess that can sometimes define the Petraeus-Nagl-Exum luddites. Nonetheless, Kilcullen delivers an intriguing approach to think about where future conflict may be.

I liked this book a great deal. Kilcullen is an excellent writer who makes his case for dealing with the many critical problems the world faces in a sensible, down-to-earth manner. The solutions he provides in the book to the problems we face right now--and will continue to face unless we do something about them--seem very practical and based on personal experience. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is the least bit concerned about the fate of the planet on which he or she lives and his or her own personal fate.
