Says more in a slender volume than many a thousand page copyright treatise. Each chapter places a fascinating, enjoyable story up front while quietly synthesizing and drawing out the law in the background. Why and when did copyright extend to photographs? How much of a plot line or character can a movie copy from a play? What about a sculpture based on a photograph of a couple holding eight puppies? Where did the concept of "transformative use" really come from? It's all here and much, much more. An elegant, masterful work. My only complaint is that Rose never makes it to my particular area of interest, video games. Let's hope for a sequel!
